DSI to call in military snipers

Police said they have evidence and will soon summon military snipers for an inquiry into their role in the crackdown on red-shirt protesters in 2010, according to the deputy Metropolitan Police chief.

Pol Maj-Gen Anuchai Lekbamrung on Sunday said police investigators had evidence in certain cases to identify armed members of an army sniper unit who may have had a role in causing injury and deaths in the 2010 violence.

Police will summon them to further investigate who should be held accountable for the 92 dead civilians and soldiers. Police investigators will hold a joint meeting with Department of Special Investigation officials on Monday to discuss how to proceed with the case. DSI director-general Tarit Pengdith?and his deputy will also attend the meeting.?

The DSI will decide on which army snipers are to be called for questioning which will take place at the agency, Pol Maj Gen Anuchai said.

Pol Maj Gen Anuchai, who heads the investigation, was speaking after the Prime Minister's Office recently appointed 50 police officers to the DSI as "investigators for special cases" related to the 2010 events.
