Iran and world powers need to stop bickering: Russia

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Global powers and Iran should "stop behaving like little children" and agree a date and place for new talks on Tehran's nuclear program, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday.

European officials have accused Tehran of stalling on arranging a meeting with the six nations, including Russia, that are trying to prevent Iran developing atomic weapons. Tehran says its nuclear program is entirely for peaceful purposes.

"Some of our partners in the six powers and the Iranian side cannot come to an agreement about where to meet," Lavrov told a news conference after talks with Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders.

"We are ready to meet at any location as soon as possible," Lavrov said. "We believe the essence of our talks is far more important (than the site), and we hope that common sense will prevail and we will stop behaving like little children."

Three rounds of talks in the first half of last year between Iran and the six powers - Russia, the United States, China, Britain, France and Germany - produced no breakthrough, increasing speculation Israel could attack Iranian nuclear installations.

Talks had been expected to resume after the U.S. presidential election, possibly as early as this month. An Iranian news agency reported this month that talks might resume on January 28 and 29, but the EU said there was no agreement.

Tips And Tricks About Fighting Childhood Obesity | Your Health ...

By Diana Maria

waistsmallOverweight or obese kids have becoming an alarming epidemic across the globe. This problem is affecting households irrespective of class, color, sex and ethnicity. Children of both developing and developed nation are being affected with almost the same intensity. The extra pounds that these kids put on pose a greater health and emotional risk. They can be prone to diabetes, asthma and serious heart ailments. They can also suffer from mental stress because of the alienation from sports and other team activities, as well as possible teasing. They can also lack from enthusiasm and energy when it comes to do something.

One of the most important aspects of fighting obesity during childhood is to understand how they get those extra pounds in the first place. It is observed that mostly children these days are eating too much and not working out enough. More importantly they are hooked up to junk food and sweetened drinks more, which piles up lots of calories and hence those extra pounds. Moreover the situation might be complicated with more time spent idle using computers or video games, or TV or mobile phones. They might be missing out the good old running and sweating by physical exercise and not getting enough calories burned up. So here are a few tips and tricks that might help your child fight obesity and lead a healthy and active life.

#1. All for one and one for all:

familyrunningFighting obesity of a child and getting him or her back to correct shape and health is not someone?s lone responsibility. The best way to do it is to get the whole family involved. If the whole family starts eating healthy, and leads an active life, it will benefit everyone in the family. Moreover they will also become the role model of the child. Eat healthy and keep telling your child what you are eating, at times you can also discuss the positive effects of the food and offer him or her a bite too.

Try to have breakfast and lunch together. That will also show the children that all of you have the same food and also discuss the benefits of them too. Make low calorie snacks, and have healthy drinks like lemonade or fruit juices in the cooler. It is better to avoid those aerated and sweetened drinks.

#2. Watch your food & theirs too:

Most children these days are hooked to junk food and soft drinks that tend to pile up calories and those extra pounds.

Most children these days are hooked to junk food and soft drinks that tend to pile up calories and those extra pounds. So to fight your child from getting overweight it is always better to start healthy eating habits. Serve and encourage eating all vegetables and fruits. Best way is to indulge in eating fresh and seasonal vegetables and fruits as they boost up the immune system as well. Try to avoid the frozen foods as they tend to lose their food value and does not taste great most of the times. Also add enough roughage in the food. Use different colored vegetables to make the dish colorful and attractive. But make sure to use very little fat and oil to cook.

Use fish, nits and vegetables as a source of fats as they are also needed to keep one healthy.

Skipping breakfast or lunch is not a healthy way to lose weight. Make sure that your child has breakfast and lunch and does not remain hungry for too long. Skipping meals does more harm than you can imagine. Make sure that the child also sees you eating all those healthy food and knows their benefit as well.

Avoid junk food and drinks as much as possible and encourage children to do so. Treat them with something special when they do so.

While making snacks or dessert make sure that they are low calorie ones. There are many ways to make delicious low calorie desserts and snacks.

Also keep track of the portions that you are serving. It is better to have small portions over a gap of two to three hours instead of having a huge portion once.

#3. Make them sweat:

boysoccerMake your children work. Let them run or jog or do physical exercise that makes calories burn. You can enroll them for swimming or martial arts or any form of sports that needs rigorous exercise. You can jog and ask them to cycle at a brisk pace with you, or they can run and you can cycle along with the, swimming is a very good option. Also gymnastics and other physically demanding and challenging sports can do a lot of good.

Do not idle yourself and lead an active life, this will help the children follow suit.

There are also some indoor games like badminton that can be very demanding physically. You can also indulge in gardening that can be physically demanding and keep you fit along with your children. Yoga can also be a good option. In case everything else has to be kept on hold for one thing or the other clean the house using the old broom and dusters with your kids.

#4. Reduce Screen time:

Limit the time your children spend in front of the television or the computer. Also limit their mobile phones. More they sit idle more they lose interest in physical activity. And without physical activity they definitely will add on those extra pounds. Take them to walks, parks and that will also do your health a lot of good.

Conclusion:

Your child may be already stressed because of his overweight or obesity. A drastic change in your lifestyle may add more to it. So do it in a slow and steady way and keep him informed about the changes in an informal way. Enroll him / her to some hobby that he/she likes as that has been seen to improve self esteem. Most importantly don?t get let down by love for your child, if you feel your child to be obese consult experts and then plan your moves accordingly. A healthy childhood can only lead to a healthy adulthood.

Obama not sure he'd allow a son to play football

(AP) ? Football's first fan isn't sure he'd let his son play the game, in light of the impact it takes on its players.

"I'm a big football fan, but I have to tell you, if I had a son, I'd have to think long and hard before I let him play football," President Barack Obama tells The New Republic.

"And I think that those of us who love the sport are going to have to wrestle with the fact that it will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence," Obama said. "In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better for the players, and those of us who are fans maybe won't have to examine our consciences quite as much."

In an interview in the magazine's Feb. 11 issue, Obama said he worries more about college players than he does about those in the NFL.

"The NFL players have a union, they're grown men, they can make some of these decisions on their own, and most of them are well-compensated for the violence they do to their bodies," Obama said. "You read some of these stories about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on. That's something that I'd like to see the NCAA think about."

'Hansel and Gretel' Movie Reviews -- What Critics Are Saying About ...

The Hansel and Gretel story from the Brothers Grimm is familiar to American as well as German children. A poor woodcutter and his wife abandon the starving brother and sister in the woods, the children stumble upon a house made of sweets; the witch who lives there tries to eat them; they burn her alive in her own oven. Laden with the witch's treasure, they return home to their now-widowed father, with whom they live happily ever after.

"Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" picks up the story 15 years later, when the two are 20-something witch bounty hunters. You find 'em, we grind 'em, could be their motto--they use all kinds of witch-killing weapons the Brothers Grimm could never have imagined. When H & G arrive in Augsburg, they find a town in an uproar over the number of missing children, a so-called witch about to be killed, and, naturally, a lot of witches.

Here's what the critics are saying:

"Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" is more Gatling guns and grenades than The Brothers Grimm. It takes the kidnapped kiddies into adulthood, where they've parlayed their fame at cooking a witch's goose into a business. Got a witch problem? Call H & G ? the extermination experts. High concept pitch or no, the movie doesn't really work. They were shooting for sort of a witch-hunting "Zombieland," an f-bomb-riddled "Van Helsing" packed with comical anachronisms ? a Bavarian forest past with witch trials, pump shotguns and primitive tasers, where bottles of milk have woodcut pictures of "missing children" on the labels. Roger Moore, McClatchy Tribune News Service
Recent years have seen numerous attempts to reinvigorate fairytales for an adult audience fall on their faces, with Terry Gilliam's The Brothers Grimm and Catherine Hardwicke's Red Riding Hood both notable failures that will understandably make audiences wary of Hansel & Gretel. And while Renner's performance here is merely adequate - Arterton fares way better - the film's real strength is Wirkola and his commitment to embracing the period and fantasy setting, rather than smugly mocking it. After all, this is a story about witches, trolls, magic and houses made of candy, and yet somehow Wirkola interprets that as an R-rated splatter fest, packed full of exploding bodies, crushed skulls, decapitations and even nudity. ?James Marsh, Twitch Film
Actor Jeremy Renner has been on a roll ever since his Academy Award?nominated performances in The Hurt Locker and The Town, which have translated into roles in franchises like The Avengers, the Bourne movies and Mission: Impossible. There's no telling whether the upcoming horror comedy Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters will be the next franchise for Renner, as audiences won't know until early next year whether the decision to delay the movie (twice!) was a red flag or savvy scheduling. Reelz TV about Movies

"Hansel and Gretel" stars Jeremy Renner as Hansel and Gemma Arterton as the brother and sister; Famke Janssen as an evil sorceress; and Pihla Viitala as the red-headed woman mistaken as a witch but saved by Hansel. It runs 88 minutes and is rated R.

Michigan's Ross School of Business to Pilot Group Interviews? in ...

Recently Soojin Kwon, Director of Admissions of the University of Michigan?s Ross School of Business, announced that the school will pilot its first ever group admissions interviews for Round 2 applicants. This is not too surprising in and of itself? For the past year Wharton has been slowly but surely rolling out its own MBA group interview process, and the early feedback has been mostly positive. We figured that other top MBA programs would announce similar new initiatives to ?break out of the essay box? and get to know applicants in new ways.

What surprised us was the fact that the school?s first group interviews won?t be in Ann Arbor, or anywhere else in the United States, for that matter. Ross will pilot its first group interviews with some Round 2 applicants in? in Beijing and Shanghai! Why would Ross fly halfway across the globe to conduct such an important experiment that could dramatically impact its MBA admissions process?

This is what Soojin Kwon had to say in her blog post:

The group interview, while not a requirement for admission, is highly recommended. Candidates who are invited to interview in those cities will still be required to conduct a standard, one-on-one interview with an alumni or current student interviewer.

Adding to the intrigue, knowing that this is so new and experimental (not to mention that Ross announced it after Round 2 applications had already been submitted), why would Ross make the new interview process ?highly recommended?? Normally, when a business school introduces a pilot such as this, the school will go out of its way to let applicants know that it?s optional, and that participating or not participating will not have a significant impact on their admissions chances.

So what gives? The most likely explanation is that the Ross admissions team is looking for a new, better way to evaluate China-based applicants? English skills. Some MBA programs rely on local alumni interviewers, and others rely on Skype for overseas applicants. These all work well for the most part, but what better way to evaluate these applicants? communication skills and English fluency than to go to where they are, sit in a room with them, and hear how well they can participate in a discussion that could go in any number of directions?

The Ross admissions team has not made much of a point about Chinese applicants? English skills being tested in these group interviews, we can?t help but think that this is a big reason (if not THE reason) why Ross will pilot this process starting in China. It will be interesting to see if this process expands to cover more Ross applicants next year.

U.S. homeland chief: cyber 9/11 could happen "imminently"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned on Thursday that a major cyber attack is a looming threat and could have the same sort of impact as last year's Superstorm Sandy, which knocked out electricity in a large swathe of the Northeast.

Napolitano said a "cyber 9/11" could happen "imminently" and that critical infrastructure - including water, electricity and gas - was very vulnerable to such a strike.

"We shouldn't wait until there is a 9/11 in the cyber world. There are things we can and should be doing right now that, if not prevent, would mitigate the extent of damage," said Napolitano, speaking at the Wilson Center think tank in Washington and referring to the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Napolitano runs the sprawling Homeland Security Department that was created 10 years ago in the aftermath of September 11 and charged with preventing another such event.

She urged Congress to pass legislation governing cyber security so the government could share information with the private sector to prevent an attack on infrastructure, much of which is privately owned.

A cyber security bill failed in Congress last year after business and privacy groups opposed it. The measure would have increased information-sharing between private companies and U.S. intelligence agencies and established voluntary standards for businesses that control power grids or water treatment plants.

Business groups said the legislation was government overreach. Privacy groups feared it might lead to Internet eavesdropping.

New cyber legislation is being considered, but it is unclear whether it will get through the gridlocked Congress.

President Barack Obama is expected to soon issue an executive order that would set up a voluntary system to help protect some critical infrastructure and offer incentives to companies that participate.

But without a new law, companies cannot be granted any kind of legal immunity for sharing information with the government and within the industry about potential threats.

Officials have pointed to recent hacking attacks on U.S. banks as a sign that the cyber threat is real and growing.

"The clarion call is here and we need to be dealing with this very urgently," said Napolitano. "Attacks are coming all the time. They are coming from different sources, they take different forms. But they are increasing in seriousness and sophistication."

Lightning linked to onset of headache, migraines

Jan. 24, 2013 ? University of Cincinnati (UC) researchers have found that lightning may affect the onset of headache and migraines.

These results, published in the Jan. 24, 2013 online edition of the journal Cephalalgia, are the first tying lightning to headache and could help chronic sufferers more efficiently anticipate headache and migraine arrival and begin preventive treatment immediately.

Geoffrey Martin, fourth-year medical student at UC, and his father Vincent Martin, MD, professor in the division of general internal medicine, UC Health physician and headache expert, led the study which showed that there was a 31 percent increased risk of headache and 28 percent increased risk of migraine for chronic headache sufferers on days lighting struck within 25 miles of study participant's homes.

In addition, new-onset headache and migraine increased by 24 percent and 23 percent in participants.

"Many studies show conflicting findings on how weather, including elements like barometric pressure and humidity, affect the onset of headaches," Geoffrey Martin says. "However, this study very clearly shows a correlation between lightning, associated meteorological factors and headaches."

Participants who fulfilled the criteria for International Headache Society-defined migraines were recruited from sites located in Ohio and Missouri and recorded their headache activity in a daily journal for three to six months.

During this time, the location where lightning struck within 25 miles of participant's homes as well as the magnitude and polarity of lightning current was recorded.

"We used mathematical models to determine if the lightning itself was the cause of the increased frequency of headaches or whether it could be attributed to other weather factors encountered with thunderstorms," says Vincent Martin. "Our results found a 19 percent increased risk for headaches on lightning days, even after accounting for these weather factors. This suggests that lightning has its own unique effect on headache."

He says that negatively charged lightning currents were also particularly associated with a higher chance of headache.

"There are a number of ways in which lightning might trigger headaches," he says. "Electromagnetic waves emitted from lightning could trigger headaches. In addition, lightning produces increases in air pollutants like ozone and can cause release of fungal spores that might lead to migraine."

"This study gives some insight into the tie between headaches or migraines, lightning and other meteorologic factors," says Geoffrey Martin. "However, the exact mechanisms through which lightning and/or its associated meteorologic factors trigger headache are unknown, although we do have speculations. Ultimately, the effect of weather on headache is complex, and future studies will be needed to define more precisely the role of lightning and thunderstorms on headache."

Aaron's Law ? The Reality-Based Community

This is a long post that sketches a system in which we can have about the right amount of digital goods at the right price, and pay the people who make them properly.? IP engineers, lawyers, and economists, have at it: time to stop rearranging deck chairs and steer the ship.?? The central underappreciated insight in my view is that the digital content technology system cannot be fixed by torturing dead-tree rules to fit it: technology rights must be technologically administered.

We should think about this in the larger context of infrastructure investment. In the last century and before, this country was able to channel enormous resources and courage to build stuff? that shaped the quality of life? for the better and that also paid off in enormous economic gains.? I?m thinking of railroads, (less fondly of highways), museums, universities,? water systems, the electric grid?
Not all of that infrastructure was physical: we also invested in all the knowledge in the libraries of those universities and the know-how in the heads of all the people who attended them, weights and measures standards so any 10-32 machine screw will fit the hole tapped with any 10-32 tap, all the music, books and movies, and more.? ?More? especially included a legal system that worked well enough to get those books written and songs played, at least as long as they had to be packaged in something that could be locked up in a room.
Almost all of it is worn-out, obsolete, undermaintained, and failing in so many ways.? The roads are potholed and congested, the electric grid doesn?t connect to where we need to collect energy and too stupid to do what it should, the universities are turning away people who want to learn (my main spring course roster is 20% waitlist and no, a bigger room won?t solve the problem)?? But the most important of these failures, triggered by our ability to encode information as bits instead of ink, is the collapse of the information distribution system, and Aaron Swartz is an appropriate symbol of almost everything that?s wrong with it.? Today I got an overdue notice from the library for a paper book. What?s next, a horsedrawn carriage ride to return it: why, in 2013, should I have to get a book back on a physical shelf for someone else to be reading it??!! Why should someone in East Gulch, with its one-day-a-week, one-room library if it has one, not be able to read it at all? Why should musicians not be able to collect a nickel for their work without selling seats for a live performance?
Now is the time to build an information infrastructure of laws and conventions that will create more value and take fewer? casualties.? First, not just a hat tip, but a sweeping bow to Lawrence Lessig, Terry Fisher, Neil Netanel, and the other thinkers who have been exploring this territory over the last decades.
First, the general principles:
(1)? Honesty:? When people decide to use information, they have the right to know what that use really cost (not what it cost to make the first copy, interesting though that might be).? When people generate information, they have the right to know what value their work created or is likely to create.
(2) Privacy: People have a right to use information privately, especially with regard to government.
(3) Efficiency: Independent choices by actors in a free market, correctly informed by prices about costs and benefits (including external costs and benefits) , will almost always beat administrative or authoritarian choices.
(4) Justice: Creators have the right to be paid for their work in amounts commensurate with the value they create.? Consumers have the duty to pay for the costs their choices impose on others. Everyone has the right to free speech as broadly understood under the First Amendment.
(5) We?re all in this together: information is the collective patrimony of society. Taxes paid reflect collective benefits but not necessarily exactly the benefits received by each person.
(6) The criteria for a digital medium property regime is that it be better than what exists, and good enough. It will have irremediable flaws and deficiencies.
Short version and implications: Creators (if they wish) need to be paid proportionally to the use made of their work; consumers of digital content need to have access to digital content at marginal cost, which is in almost every case zero beyond the consumer?s time and wear and tear on her hard drive.? The big fact about consuming digital content is that doing so leaves no less for everyone else; the corollary of this fact is that charging any more than nothing to consumers is wasteful.
Here is a sketch of? the only regime known to me that respects these principles.? Nothing in it exceeds demonstrated capacities of existing technology. Note that it can coexist with conventional copyright for authors who prefer the latter.
A. Beginning in 20xx, there shall be appropriated from general funds to the copyright office the sum of $00? per year for administrative costs and implementation of the program described herein.? Beginning in 20yy,? there shall be appropriated from general funds to the copyright office the sum of $000? annually to be disbursed as ?use-scaled? royalties as provided in the following titles.
B. Any legal person wishing to receive use-scaled royalties for creative work in digital form as author shall place with the copyright office a fair copy of the text, image, recording, etc. and identification sufficient to direct annual royalty payments.? The copyright office shall retain copies and distribute royalties for 00 years after a work is first registered, and inform registrants of attempts to register works already in the system.
C. Any device with access to the internet shall be equipped with software distributed and certified by the copyright office that will, whenever a file is opened:
a. ?Hashcode? or otherwise extract sufficient information to identify the work contained .
b. Transmit the code created under C.a ,? but not who or what opened the file, to the copyright office.? One such transmission of code is a use of that work.
c. Transmission of the file containing a work between devices or persons shall not be a use.
D. The copyright office shall accumulate annually a count of uses for each registered work.? Annual royalties shall be distributed in proportion to the fraction of uses recorded for? each work, divided by the total of uses for all registered works.? Total royalties may be separated into such separate funds for different media [for example, video/movie royalties may result in different per-use payments than music or text] as Congress may from time to time determine.
The copyright office may use statistical sampling techniques to determine the allocation of royalties where appropriate, balancing precision and accuracy of result against administrative cost.
E. The copyright office shall not trace the origin of, nor keep any record of, the individual or device that opened a file thus identified, nor cooperate with any law enforcement or security agency with regard to its records of use.
F. The copyright office shall perform the legal, computer science, and related research required to implement the actions described herein internally and/or by contract as the Register of Copyright may determine.
G. Any person may copy, distribute, read/listen to/watch/mashup/etc., any work registered for use-based royalties without limit of time or place.
H. No provision herein shall replace or nullify any rights granted authors and their assigns under existing copyright law, except that a work in which copyright is claimed shall not be admissible for registration for use-based royalties. Rightful owners of existing copyright who register their works for use-based royalties transfer their rights to the public domain as per G above.
I. Rights to use-based royalties are transferable? among legal persons with notice to the copyright office.

While CFD is considered to be easy to use by traders, it is also?comprehensive?- allowing for 85 different indicators, a wide range of different time frames, and eight different types of charts for traders to choose from.

The instrument is available only to Admiral Market traders? customers, and it is now available on Admiral Markets AS live for both Standard and Micro accounts. The instrument can also be used on demo accounts. Contracts for Difference includes?the ability to?trade:

??30 Stocks (NYSE and NASDAQ listed large corporations)

??7 Stock Indices (S&P 500, DJIA 30, NASDAQ 100, Nikkei 225, CAC 40, DAX 30, and FTSE 100)

??1 Spot Metal (Silver)

??2 Energy Futures (Crude Oil and Natural Gas)

CFD has been deemed as ?the next generation of visual chart trading,? as it includes real chart trading using the upgraded Admiral Markets MT4 Supreme Edition. Here, traders are able to better manage their Take-Profit (T/P) or Stop-Loss (S/L) limits directly from the chart by clicking on the line and moving it with their mouse.

Other features of the?CFD instrument include:

??The ability to modify or cancel pending orders. In addition to moving the mouse directly in the chart for altering Stop-Loss and Take-Profit orders, traders can also do the same in order to close out an order altogether.

??Use of true multi-chart trading. Traders can also use several open charts for only one instrument.

Through the MT4 Supreme platform, traders can use the extended features for managing the 1-Click Trade Manager. This allows traders to change settings such as the color of their lines, and/or to indicate whether or not they want a confirm for changing their Stop-Loss and Take-Profit limits.

In addition, when traders have their charts on, they will have labels for the different lines on each chart. This can help to make the purpose of each line more clear as well as in more clearly ordering their charts overall. As with all of the company?s other programs, Admiral Markets? CFD use is secure due to Admiral Markets? cooperation with ESET, LLC, an online security application.

The ease of the new CFD instrument fits well with Admiral Markets? 1-Click Trade Manager, or Mini Terminal, in that traders can place their buy and sell orders by simply clicking on the large green and red buy and sell buttons.

The MT4 will show traders a dotted horizontal line for each of their orders, and it also draws markers that show traders where their orders have been opened and closed. A trader is able to control their lot size on their new orders. In addition, they can set a stop-loss, take-profit, or a trailing-stop by using the fields that are shown on their screen directly above the buy and sell buttons.

The MetaTrader 4 also allows traders to open a calculator for each of the fields that shows users the equivalent number of pips to cash. For instance, if a trader is trading 0.25 lots and they want a stop-loss that is equal to $100, then they would simply tell the calculator to work out the number of pips that would be equal to the $100 price. Should traders have a specific type of order that they regularly place, they can save a template for quick re-use.

Pending orders such as stops and limits can also be easily placed by clicking on a yellow button on the trader?s computer screen. They can then choose the type of order, the entry price, stop-loss, and take-profit options. Here, the entry price for a pending order can either be defined as a fixed price or as a number of pips. For example, if a trader chooses to do a buy-limit order and they enter a value of 20 pips rather than a specific price, the limit order will then be created 20 pips below the current price.

Through its offering of education via seminars and webinars, the company takes steps to ensure that traders are well informed prior to initiating any trades using real currency. This, along with the analytical tools that are provided for traders directly on the website, help to ensure more successful trades.

Admiral Markets? one-click trading has allowed traders to simplify their moves ? including the opening and closing of positions ? with one single click of a mouse. Interested traders can immediately?begin using CFD?via a demo account prior to trading with real currency.

From The Desk Of Dr.Shapiro: ?Communication? : Vintage Frames ...

Posted by Zaki on Saturday, January 19, 2013

The notion of communication is imperative. With technological advances face to face combat is on it?s way out. From ?Internet Thuggs? to ?text bandits?, the world is full of informal communication from the safety of a hand held device. The beauty about the old days, is that people could see the conviction in your eyes. It was that danger in your eyes that let them know you were a brawler. With people building ?removed? egos and courage from the mobile safety of a cellphone, communication as a whole has changed directions. As well written as I may be, or maybe ?liberally expressive? I too get shunned by people who feel protected by a LAN line and satellites. In my particular situation today it was a necessity to travel to have these particular discussions face to face. Old school, new school, no school, verbal communication face to face is the most proper and efficient way to go about problem solving. You can always tell the real from the fake by the dude that shows up at your door, vs the person that types a long SMS. It?s#friday?and problem solving finds me in?#germany?where a fucking face to face resolution was achieved, and a celebration is in order. Cool, you fucked that dude up on text. Oops, he?s gonna fuck you up in real life! The downfall to mobile communication is it gives one a false sense of reality. Realize that the mobile device is a means of communication NOT a weapon. If a text messages is your sword of choice, you better reconsider your ?provider?. Ya feel me?#morninginspiration?#vintageframes

When mom is CEO at home, workplace ambitions take a back seat

Jan. 18, 2013 ? When mom is the boss at home, she may have a harder time being the boss at work. New research suggests that women, but not men, become less interested in pursuing workplace power when they view that they are in control of decision-making in the home. This shift in thinking affects career choices without women even being aware.

"Women don't know that they are backing off from workplace power because of how they are thinking about their role at home," says Melissa Williams of Emory University. "As a result, women may make decisions such as not going after a high-status promotion at work, or not seeking to work full time, without realizing why," explains Williams who will be presenting her findings on January 18 at the Society of Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) annual meeting in New Orleans.

Her new study is one of several at the SPSP meeting that will explore a continued gender gap in workplace power -- from how women versus men view their roles in the home to how gender stereotypes form at a young age to how these attitudes affect women's likelihood of pursuing careers in science and math. "Even as we see great gains made by women in the workforce, we continue to also see disproportionately larger numbers of women leaving successful careers, or diverting their career paths to ones with fewer hours and greater flexibility, but that also hold less status," says Bernadette Park of the University of Colorado Boulder.

When women rule at home

We often speak about women as being decision-making experts or powerholders in the home setting -- for example, expecting that men will defer to their wives' decisions regarding clothing. But while people intend these references to be complimentary to women, Williams says, "such language may have a negative effect on the decisions they make about their lives outside the home, without them being aware of it."

To test this effect, Williams and colleagues first surveyed people to gauge their views of power in household decisions-making. Both men and women perceived power over household decisions as being desirable and making a person feel powerful.

They then asked men and women aged 18 to 30 years old to imagine that they were married and had a child in one of three conditions: either they make many of the decisions; they make decisions together with their spouse; or they perform most of the household tasks with no mention of household decision-making power. Women were less interested in pursuing work goals when they had household power, compared to sharing equal power with a spouse. Men's interest in work goals, however, was unaffected by their household power.

Also, women's interest in workplace power did not change simply by imagining that they were performing household tasks. "It is only when such tasks are described as involving power that they negatively affect women's motivation to pursue workplace power," Williams says. "We think this is because referring to women's household role as one involving power puts a positive spin on women's traditional role on the home, and makes it seem more appealing."

"It is one thing for a woman to choose to stay at home if she wishes her primary role be that of wife and mother," Williams says. "But when the language we use to talk about household chores makes such a role unconsciously more appealing to women, without the same effect on men, this is not what most people think of as making a free choice."

When mom and worker collide

Women have some even more basic obstacles to overcome when working at both home and in the workplace. According to new study, women experience conflict in managing their identities as a parent and a worker at the same time, much more so than men.

"The basic premise of this research is that cultural stereotypes of the 'ideal mom' conflict with stereotypes of the 'ideal worker' and in particular the 'ideal professional,' says Park of the University of Colorado Boulder. "In contrast, for men, successfully fulfilling the role of professional in part also fulfills obligations associated with the 'ideal dad,'" such as being a provider and being decisive. "For women, the identities of mom and professional are experienced in opposition or conflict with one another in a way that dad and professional are not for men."

Park and colleagues measured how easily women and men associate themselves with career versus family goals through a series of "implicit" association tests that measure how quickly people categorize words within the two goal domains. They found that women often had to "switch hats" in thinking about parenting versus work, while men primarily associated themselves with just work.

They also found that women performed more poorly on cognitive tasks after experiencing shifts in how they associate with these two identities, but not before. Men showed no such depletion of cognitive capacities. The researchers further found that when women received negative feedback related to a career-related task, they would more strongly "activate" their identity as a parent, "as if easing the sting of the failure," Park says.

The data together suggest that "one of the greatest challenges faced by women in trying to 'have it all' is that they experience a psychological conflict in their most basic identities not true of men," Park says. "Mentally, they have to shift back and forth between self-conceptions of self-as-mom versus self-as-professional and these two selves do not reside easily next to each other."

When children follow what you do not what you say

Even when women work full-time, they often still shoulder a disproportionate amount of domestic responsibilities at home. This division of labor can fundamentally change how children view their gender roles, even if parents teach their children to be egalitarian, according to new research.

"When it comes to learning gender roles, actions and implicit attitudes might speak louder than words," says Toni Schmader of the University of British Columbia. "Parents pride themselves on teaching their kids that they can be anything they want to be. However, parents' own behavior and entrenched cultural associations continue to reinforce more traditional gender roles."

Looking at male and female children between the ages of 7 and 13 and dads and moms, all in heterosexual cohabiting relationships, the researchers, led by Schmader and graduate student Alyssa Croft, tested implicit attitudes toward men and women in the workplace versus home. They also asked their parents about their paid work hours and relative contribution to domestic tasks at home and asked children about preferences for gender-stereotypical toys, shows, and future roles or occupations.

The researchers found that regardless of whether parents explicitly endorsed gender-egalitarian roles, if their actual behaviors modeled a more traditional division of household labor, their children -- especially their daughters -- preferred more gender-typical toys, TV shows, and future occupations.

They also found that women performed more of the domestic tasks at home, even after controlling for fewer hours spent at work compared to men. "Looking specifically at parents who work full-time, we saw that women still reported doing nearly twice as much of the domestic work as men do," Schmader says. "In line with these trends, both parents and kids tended to associate women more than men with childcare and domestic work."

And they found that fathers' stereotypical beliefs and behavior are particularly important for their daughters' identities. "Girls might develop ideas of what is possible for them by the kind of roles their fathers seem to expect from women in general and their moms more specifically," Schmader says.

When girls see a new image of science

Where we often see the largest under-representation of women is in the area of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). In a new study, making girls feel welcome in computer science and changing their stereotypes about the subject dramatically increased their interest in the field.

"Adolescence is a critical stage at which to recruit more females into these fields as they begin to make career-relevant decisions, yet gender differences in attitudes toward computing are already evident during this period," says Sapna Cheryan of the University of Washington. Therefore, Cheryan and colleagues sought to change prevailing cultural stereotypes of computer scientists to see how it affected young women.

They showed high-school students photos of two introductory computer science classrooms, one that contained highly stereotypical objects (e.g., Star Trek posters) and one that did not (e.g., nature posters). They told students that both courses covered the same material, had the same amount of homework, a male teacher, and a 50:50 gender proportion. Students rated their interest and their "sense of belonging" in both courses. With a stereotypical classroom, the girls' interest in the course was lower than the boys' interest, but with the non-stereotypical class, it increased to the same level. Boys' interest did not change as a result of the stereotypes.

Such a low-cost approach for countering stereotypes of science as geeky and male-oriented can increase girls' sense of belonging and get them more interested in this field without harming boys in the process, Cheryan says. "Inspiring girls to enter technological fields is critical for ensuring women's participation in, and contributions to, cutting-edge technological innovation."

Lynnwood Library to launch new eBook service | Lynnwood Today

Thursday, January 17, 2013

LibraryOn Jan. 24,?Sno-Isle Libraries, which includes the?Lynnwood Library, will be the first library district in the Pacific Northwest to launch a new eBook service from 3M Cloud Library Systems. The new eBook service will make it easier for Snohomish and Island County ebook customers to find and check-out over 3,000 additional eBook titles for use on non-Kindle devices, computers and laptops.

Area residents are cordially invited to attend the unveiling event and short speakers program. This event will also offer an opportunity to view customer demos and speak with representatives from 3M Cloud and Polaris. Library customers are being encouraged to bring their e-gadgets for coaching on how to use this new service.

Officials on-hand for 3 p.m. event at?Lynnwood Library:

Kendra Trachta, Public Services Director of Sno-Isle Libraries

Jeanne Crisp, Technical Services Director of Sno-Isle Libraries

Matt Tempelis, 3M Cloud Library Services Business Manager

Bill Shickling, President/CEO of Polaris (the vendor supplying the Libraries? circulation system)

Why it Matters

eBook reading is skyrocketing and so is the demand for titles. According to a study published last week by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, the share of Americans who read eBooks increased dramatically over the past year to 23 percent from the previous year?s 16 percent. The tablets and e-reader devices are now owned by one-third of the U.S. population, aged 16 and older. This rapid technology adoption rate is driving an insatiable appetite for eBook titles which has been difficult for public libraries to satisfy, until now.

If you wish to attend, you may RSVP by calling Debie Murchie at 360-651-7029 or replying at dmurchie@sno-isle.org.

Rebuild your credit history by paying off your debt management plan ...

Over the last few years, more than 1 million people have accumulated unmanageable debts. These consumers have had very few opportunities/lenders willing to grant loans to consolidate their unsecured debts and found themselves entering into a debt management plan as a last resort, this to ease the financial burden and prevent aggressive debt collection practices by certain creditors.

The debt management plan provides a great deal of relief and is a valid tool for many, particularly tenants. But in many instances, home owners have found themselves worsening their financial position unnecessarily and basically wiping out their personal credit history, when other consolidation opportunities should have been offered by the debt firms to those with lots of equity in their home.

A recent positive trend via the moneybrain website is applications coming from clients who have been paying into a debt management plan month in month out for several years, who now find themselves in a better financial position and want to rebuild their credit history. For these people, the debt management plan has now served it?s purpose and they want to clear their debts in full and move back up the credit rating food chain.

Until recently lenders would not entertain any applicant who was in a debt management plan. This is completely understandable as the unsecured lenders in most instances where not going to get repaid in full, however we are pleased to report that a number of common sense lenders are now entertaining secured loan applications from those looking to settle their debt management plans, providing they have the income and security in the home to justify it.

As a guide, the applicants would have to have been paying their mortgage on time for at least twelve months, be in full time employment/self employment and be able to afford the loan repayments. All our lenders are extremely responsible and would only grant a loan if it was going to be placing the applicants in a better financial position.

Other points to consider;

  • Minimum Property Valuation ?100,000.
  • The clients mortgage and proposed loan must not exceed 70% of the property value. i.e. If the clients Mortgage is for ?50,000 the maximum loan available to clear the debts could be no more than ?20,000.
  • A valid explanation as to why they entered into a debt management plan in the first place.
  • Been in their current job for a minimum of twelve months.
  • The credit history not worsened since they took out a debt management plan.
  • Their debts had reduced in the debt management plan since it?s inception.
  • Each case is different and will be underwritten by a human being, not a computer.
  • Broker fees and lender fees will be charged, but only on completion and can be added to the loan. No upfront fees would be payable whatsoever, so please be aware as there are a number of rogue traders currently scamming people out of large up-front fees promising loans that applicants are never going to obtain..

Within minutes of Armstrong announcing he would step down as chairman of Livestrong, the foundation he created to support people with cancer, his longtime endorser Nike issued a statement saying it would be cutting sponsorship ties with the cyclist amid allegations of doping. Armstrong is said to be worth around $100 million, but most sponsors dropped him after USADA's scathing report _ at the cost of tens of millions of dollars. Lance Armstrong may not be done confessing.

His interview with Oprah Winfrey hasn't aired yet, but already some people want to hear more ? under oath ? before Armstrong is allowed to compete in elite triathlons, a sport he returned to after retiring from cycling in 2011. In addition to stripping him of all seven of his Tour de France titles last year, anti-doping officials banned Armstrong for life from sanctioned events.

"He's got to follow a certain course," said David Howman, director general of World Anti-Doping Agency. "That is not talking to a talk show host."

Armstrong already has had conversations with U.S. Anti-Doping Agency officials, touching off speculation that the team leader who demanded loyalty from others soon may face some very tough choices himself: whether to cooperate and name those who aided, knew about or helped cover up a sophisticated doping ring that Armstrong ran on his tour-winning U.S. Postal Service squads. Former teammate Frankie Andreu, one of several riders Armstrong cast aside on his ride to the top of the sport, said no one could provide a better blueprint for cleaning up the sport.

"Lance knows everything that happened," Andreu told The Associated Press. "He's the one who knows who did what because he was the ringleader. It's up to him how much he wants to expose."

World Anti-Doping Agency officials said nothing short of "a full confession under oath" would even cause them to reconsider the ban. Although Armstrong admitted to Winfrey on Monday that he used performance-enhancing drugs, Howman said that is "hardly the same as giving evidence to a relevant authority." The International Cycling Union also urged Armstrong to tell his story to an independent commission it has set up to examine claims that the sport's governing body hid suspicious samples, accepted financial donations, and helped Armstrong avoid detection in doping tests.

Winfrey wouldn't detail what Armstrong said during their interview at a downtown Austin hotel. In an appearance on "CBS This Morning," she said she was "mesmerized and riveted by some of his answers." What had been planned as a 90-minute broadcast will be shown as a two-part special, Thursday and Friday, on Winfrey's OWN network.

The lifetime ban was imposed after a 1,000-page report by USADA last year outlined a complex, long-running doping program led by Armstrong. The cyclist also lost nearly all of his endorsements and was forced to cut ties with the Livestrong cancer charity he founded in 1997. The damage to Armstrong's reputation was just as severe.

The report portrayed him as well-versed in the use of a wide range of performance-enhancers, including steroids and blood boosters such as EPO, and willing to exploit them to dominate. Nearly a dozen teammates provided testimony about that drug regimen, among them Andreu and his wife, Betsy.

"A lot of it was news and shocking to me," Andreu said. "I am sure it's shocking to the world. There's been signs leading up to this moment for a long time. For my wife and I, we've been attacked and ripped apart by Lance and all of his people, and all his supporters repeatedly for a long time. I just wish they wouldn't have been so blind and opened up their eyes earlier to all the signs that indicated there was deception there, so that we wouldn't have had to suffer as much.

"And it's not only us," he added, "he's ruined a lot of people's lives."

Armstrong was believed to have left for Hawaii. The street outside his Spanish-style villa on Austin's west side was quiet the day after international TV crews gathered there hoping to catch a glimpse of him. Meanwhile, members of his legal team mapped out a strategy on how to handle at least two pending lawsuits against Armstrong, and possibly a third.

Former teammate Floyd Landis, who was stripped of the 2006 Tour de France title for doping, alleges in one of the lawsuits that Armstrong defrauded the U.S. government by repeatedly denying he used performance-enhancing drugs. The False Claims Act lawsuit could require Armstrong to return substantial sponsorship fees and pay a hefty fine. The AP reported earlier Tuesday that Justice Department officials were likely to join the whistleblower lawsuit before a Thursday deadline.
