Egyptian Brotherhood leaders to face trial for inciting murder

CAIRO (Reuters) - The leader of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood and his deputy will face trial in three weeks' time for crimes including incitement to murder during protests in the days before the overthrow of President Mohamed Mursi, a Cairo court announced on Sunday.

The move showed the army-backed interim government was pushing ahead with a crackdown against the Muslim Brotherhood, to which Mursi belongs, while international envoys try to help resolve the political crisis brought on by his removal by the army on July 3.

State news agency MENA quoted the court as saying it would start the trial of Mohamed Badie and his deputy Khairat el-Shater on August 25.

The general prosecutor also ordered the pre-trial detention for 15 days of Rifaa El-Tahtawy, Mursi's former chief-of-staff, and his deputy, who are accused of inciting the detention, torture and interrogation of protesters in 2012, MENA reported.

Mursi's allies view them as political detainees who should be included in talks to ease tensions.

Badie, who is not in custody, Shater and Rashad al-Bayoumi, another Brotherhood leader, are due to be tried alongside three others accused of killing at least two men in violence around the group's Cairo headquarters on June 30.

Arrested warrants were issued for Shater and Badie on July 4 on accusations of inciting the violence in which at least eight people were killed on a night of mass protests against Mursi.

Shater, a businessman seen as the Brotherhood's leading political strategist, had been the Islamist group's first choice candidate to run in last year's presidential election. But he was disqualified due to past convictions, forcing Mursi to take his place.

Bayoumi is being held in Torah prison on the outskirts of Cairo, the same place where former strongman Hosni Mubarak, who was toppled by a popular uprising in February 2011, and his sons Alaa and Gamal are detained.

Mursi, who has also been accused of murder and other crimes, is detained at an undisclosed location.

Miley Cyrus may have confirmed last month that her engagement to Liam Hemsworth is still on (despite speculation to the contrary), but the superstar doesn't seem to be in a rush to plan her Big Day.

Her little sister, Noah Cyrus, told reporters at VH1's Do Something Awards this week that her big sis hasn't locked in any wedding plans.

"I don't think they're planning yet," she said. Noah added that she wants to be maid of honor at the wedding, and hopes Miley picks out a cool dress for her. She said, "It better be a very, very cool dress that I have because I want to rock a dress!"

Cyrus and Hemsworth got engaged in May 2012; they began dating in 2009. At the time, Cyrus told People magazine, "I'm so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam." However, the couple's relationship has since been plagued by breakup rumors.

Ledecky wins 4th gold, set another WR at worlds

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Katie Ledecky capped a brilliant world swimming championships with her fourth gold medal and second world record Saturday.

The 16-year-old American turned it on over the final laps to win the 800-meter freestyle in 8 minutes, 13.86 seconds. She powered to the wall like it was a sprint, not the last of 16 laps.

Lotte Friis of Denmark set the early pace but simply couldn't keep up when Ledecky turned it on, a repeat of their race in the 1,500 where the teenager broke the previous record by more than 6 seconds.

This time, Ledecky took down the mark of 8:14.10 set by Britain's Rebecca Adlington at the 2008 Olympics. Friis settled for another silver, and New Zealand's Lauren Boyle claimed the bronze ? the same order as in the 1,500.

Genesee County delaying bond sale, Wayne County rating cut ...

A delayed bond sale by a Michigan county that's home to the birthplace of General Motors Co. shows how Detroit's fiscal distress is penalizing local governments in the eighth-largest U.S. state by population.

Genesee County put off the $54.2 million offering planned for yesterday, two weeks after Detroit entered the nation's biggest municipal bankruptcy. The sale would've been the largest in Michigan since the court filing, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Flint, GM's birthplace and the seat of Genesee County, is about an hour's drive northwest of the Motor City.

A proposal to pay off part of Detroit's general-obligation debt at deep discounts has worried some investors in municipal securities that the plan may set a precedent for other Michigan cities enduring fiscal stress. Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr's blueprint to avoid bankruptcy included the losses for bondholders. Yields are rising on Michigan bonds, pushing up the state's costs to borrow in the $3.7 trillion muni market.

"You're seeing credits associated with Michigan in general having a tough time and spreads widening out in sympathy," said Dexter Torres, head trader at New York-based Samson Capital Advisors LLC, which manages about $7 billion of municipal securities. Munis issued by the state have reflected a penalty at least since January, data compiled by Bloomberg show.

Yield penalty

The extra yield investors demand to own 10-year general-obligation securities sold by Michigan rather than top-rated debt rose to 0.44 percentage point Thursday, the most since July 12, Bloomberg data show. The spread has averaged about 0.45 percentage point this year as Detroit's fiscal crisis escalated.

Standard & Poor's may adjust ratings on general-obligation bonds from issuers throughout Michigan depending on how Detroit's debt is dealt with in bankruptcy, Jane Ridley, the New York-based company's primary Detroit analyst, said in an online presentation Thursday.

Terry Stanton, a spokesman for Michigan Treasurer Andy Dillon, didn't respond to a telephone message seeking comment on the treatment of debt from Michigan issuers.

"We believe it prudent for municipal investors to question whether they should pay any form of safety premium for Michigan general-obligation bonds relative to other forms of municipal liabilities," Shawn O'Leary and Molly Shellhorn, Nuveen Investments Inc. analysts in Chicago, said in a report following the bankruptcy filing for the state's most-populous city.

Widespread poverty

Flint, where GM founder William Durant once made horse carriages, is also run by a state-appointed emergency manager. About 38 percent of its 101,000 residents live in poverty, compared with 36 percent in Detroit, 19 percent for Genesee County and the 16 percent Michigan average, U.S. Census Bureau data show.

The county planned to sell bonds tied to water-system revenue, backed by a limited-tax general-obligation pledge, to help finance land and facilities to add supply from Lake Huron, according to offering documents. The county buys water from Flint, which gets it from the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. S&P rates Genesee debt A+, its fifth-highest rank.

Keith Francis, the county controller, and Deb Cherry, its treasurer, didn't respond to emails and telephone messages seeking comment on the delay. Paul Stauder at Stauder, Barch & Associates, the deal's financial adviser, also didn't respond to a voicemail seeking comment.

Justin Perras, a spokesman for New York-based JPMorgan Chase & Co., the lead underwriter, declined to comment.

Wayne County downgrade

Following Genesee County's delay, Moody's Investors Service cut its rating to Baa3 on Wayne County's almost $726 million in general-obligation limited-tax debt. Moody's cited fiscal pressures from a depreciating tax base and budget deficits, as well as Detroit's condition, for the single-step downgrade to one level above junk. The city is the county seat.

Saginaw County, north of Detroit, still plans to sell almost $61 million of general-obligation debt next week. The deal will help the county of about 198,000 residents finance unfunded pension liabilities of about $60 million. The bonds have an Aa3 rating from Moody's, the fourth-highest level.

"We think we will get positive attention toward this sale," Robert Belleman, Saginaw County's controller, said by telephone Thursday. "The county is in strong financial health and has limited outstanding debt. And people will see that this sale is more for budget stabilization."

? Brian Chappatta writes for Bloomberg News.

Danone is incorporating the RISE tool into its assessment of ...

As an agrofood company, Danone has an interest in agriculture being productive and competitive, and a responsibility to support agricultural practices that are respectful of the environment, consumer health and producers? living and working conditions. This means that it has to find a way to combine both aspects. In other words, Danone supports competitive agriculture that creates social value, respects natural ecosystems and generates better nutritional balance. In its subsidiaries and everywhere in the world, the Group is thus developing the appropriate tools to help it meet that challenge. A new one is being tested right now, in the framework of a wider approach to sustainable agriculture with the support of the Danone Ecosystem Fund. The actions undertaken in this domain are specific in that they integrate resources from Danone, thanks to the expertise developed by the Group in dairy farming communities in many parts of the world, while supporting and cooperating with many external organizations.
?

A merger between two existing tools

In its quest for a better agricultural balance, Danone has defined its own compass. With its four axes: Nature, Economy, Well-Being and Social, it guides the group towards a holistic approach to agriculture, supporting innovation and improvements within the farms that need them.

But Danone, like other large companies, is noteworthy in that it works with a tremendous variety of milk suppliers. They vary in size (subsistence farms with less than 5 cows, medium farms with up to 300 cows and big farms with over 300 cows), geographical location, climate, history and habits, etc. The major principle that derives from this sounds simple: ?No size fits all.? But it means that an accurate knowledge and understanding of each and every situation is required to identify and create the appropriate solutions.

This is why Danone has decided to combine two pre-existing tools.

. On one side, FaRMS (Farmer Relationship Management Software), an in-house programme developed since the 1990s to assess the farming practices that can affect food safety and milk quality, as well as environmental impacts and social conditions for workers, based on 70 criteria.

.And on the other side, RISE (The Response-Inducing Sustainability Evaluation), a method that ?serves the holistic assessment of the sustainability of agricultural production at the level of the individual farm,? developed by the University of Bern (HAFL, Switzerland) in the late 1990s.

RISE?s modus operandi is as follows: first, it collects data about the farm, through a three-hour interview with the farmer based on a questionnaire. Then, the data is compiled and analysed against ten sustainability indicators: soil use / animal husbandry / nutrient flows (emissions, waste management, etc.) / water use / energy & climate / biodiversity & plant protection / working conditions / quality of life / economic viability / farm management.?

UNEpolygone

? Sustainability polygon of the farm (RISE 2.0) adapted to Danone specifities. -

These indicators cover the whole of Danone?s compass, making the RISE tool a powerful one for the Group. All ten indicators are then translated into a polygon through which the farm?s sustainability situation can be visualised at a glance. ?The resulting figures are rated on a scale ranging from 0 (worst, centre of the polygon) to 100 (best, outer boundary of the polygon),? explains the University of Bern. The areas where the most improvement is needed can thus be identified: the tool helps in defining priorities. The finals steps are then to build a strategy with the farmers according to the results and to implement these measures at farm level. As Jan Grenz insists, the evaluation is ?a differentiated farm analysis, not a pass-or-fail test that would lead to a certification.?
?

A testing phase that relies on cooperation and co-creation

?
The tool is now entering a testing phase in several pilot business units in Poland, France, Brazil, Germany, the United States and Indonesia. The aims for this testing phase are, firstly, to identify weaknesses both at farm level and within the business units? territory, and secondly to set priorities in order to define any improvement plans. With this attempt at adapting the RISE tool, which has proven over the past twelve years to be pertinent and useful, Danone hopes to refine its take on sustainable agriculture, on a global scale but also at an ultra-local level. The philosophy of the RISE tool should help further approaches that are already important to Danone, such as dialogue and co-creation with farmers. As Mr Grenz puts it,

since RISE builds on a relationship of trust, and the analysis of social and economic sustainability involves the sharing of delicate information (?) by the farmer, confidentiality and voluntariness are key pillars of each RISE application.

Later on, the farmers are closely involved when the major calls for action are defined.

This experience with RISE shows one thing:?sustainable agriculture pertains to long-term thinking and thus to farm strategy. (?) If a company like Danone embarks on the process of using RISE in their agricultural supplier network, this reflects an awareness of the long-term nature of sustainable agricultural development as well as a readiness to invest time and capacities into reliable and lasting relationships with farmers.

We will keep you posted on the results of the testing phase!
