Northern California having wet Christmas

With 2013 around the corner, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reminds motorists of several new laws that will ring in the New Year.

Among the new laws that take effect in January is AB 2020, which deletes the option for persons alleged to be driving under the influence of drugs to choose a chemical test of their urine for the purpose of determining drug impairment, with certain exceptions.

Other new laws will establish a new license plate, protect car buyers from buy-herepay- here car dealers in purchase transactions, establish safety standards for autonomous vehicles and impose a new fee on vessel owners.

The following is a listing of selected motor vehicle and driver-related laws that will take effect on January 1, 2013.

---- Driving Under the Influence.
Drivers suspected of driving under the influence of drugs will no longer have the option to choose a chemical test of their urine to determine drug content. By requiring a blood test, with a few exceptions, AB 2020 will help law enforcement and prosecutors to better identify and convict persons driving under the influence of drugs. If a blood test is unavailable, then the person is deemed to have given his or her consent to a urine test. (AB 2020/Pan)

---- California Legacy License Plates.
Effective January 1, 2013, DMV will accept applications for a series of three specialized license plates that replicate plates from California's past. Motorists

will be able to choose from a minimum of three styles: yellow background with black lettering, black background with yellow lettering, and blue background with yellow lettering. (AB 1658/Gatto)

---- Buy-Here-Pay-Here Car Dealers.
Two new laws are directed at used car dealers that assign less than 90 percent of their conditional sales and lease contracts to third party lenders; and therefore provide direct financing to car buyers. One of the new laws defines these used car dealers as buy-here-pay-here dealers.

AB 1447 further prohibits these dealers from requiring buyers to make payments in person, except for the down payment, and limits the circumstances under which buy-herepay- here dealers may track a vehicle using electronic tracking technology (GPS tracking). Buy-here-payhere used car dealers will not be allowed to disable a vehicle with starter interrupt technology without first notifying the buyer in writing at the time of sale.

In addition, buy-here-pay here used car dealers will be required to provide a 30- day or 1,000 mile warranty as part of any purchase or lease of a used vehicle. (AB 1447/Feuer)

AB 1534 requires buy-here- pay-here used car dealers to affix and prominently display a label on any used vehicle offered for retail sale that provides the reasonable market value of the vehicle. The label must contain specific information from a recognized pricing guide used to determine that value and the date the value was determined.

The prospective purchaser must also be provided with a copy of the information that the dealer used to determine the vehicle's value. (AB 1534/Wieckowski)

---- Traffic Violator School.
AB 1888 will allow commercial drivers to attend traffic violator school (TVS) for violations that take place when operating non-commercial vehicles. The conviction would not count as a point for determining whether a driver is presumed to be a negligent operator unless it was considered a serious violation. The record of the conviction would not be held confidential and would be disclosed to employers, and to insurers for insurance underwriting and rating purposes. (AB 1888/Gatto)

---- Veteran License Plates.
An increase in fees for the issuance, renewal, and personalization of veterans' organizations license plates will benefit the County Veterans Service Officers Fund. The fund is used by local agencies to assist veterans and their families in obtaining benefits and services accrued through military service.

This new law also clarifies the plate's availability to veterans and non-veterans, requires DMV to make decals available for the plate that indicate an applicant's service in a particular war or armed conflict and decals honoring veterans of a particular war or conflict.

Additionally, the law will require DMV to make available a yellow ribbon/support our troops decal to be issued in lieu of the above-described service decals. (AB 1550/Bonilla)

---- Autonomous Vehicles.
This new law allows for testing of autonomous vehicles, or self-driving cars, by designees of an autonomous technology manufacturer, provided certain requirements are met. Prior to the public operating autonomous vehicles, a manufacturer is required to submit an application to DMV, and certify that specified insurance, vehicle safety, and testing standards have been met.

The legislation authorizes regulations to specify any additional requirements deemed necessary by DMV, such as limitations on the number of autonomous vehicles deployed on the states highways, special vehicle registration and driver licensing requirements, and rules for the suspension, revocation, or denial of any license or approval issued by DMV pertaining to autonomous vehicles. (SB 1298/Padilla)

---- Vessel Registration Fees.
An increase in vessel registration fees, as yet to be determined by the Department of Boating and Waterways, will be collected by DMV to fund the implementation and administration of dreissenid mussel monitoring, inspection, and infestation prevention programs in California waterways.

The fee may not exceed ten dollars and will not be imposed on vessels operated exclusively in marine waters. (AB 2443/Williams)

Bears beat Lions 26-24 to stay in playoff race

(AP) ? Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears held on late against turnover-prone Detroit.

Now, the waiting begins.

Cutler threw for 257 yards and a touchdown and helped seal the game with a late scramble, and Chicago kept its playoff hopes alive ? for now ? with a 26-24 win over the Lions on Sunday.

The Bears (10-6) still need a Minnesota loss to Green Bay to reach the postseason. The win by Chicago eliminated the defending champion New York Giants from the playoff picture.

The Lions (4-12) lost their last eight games and turned the ball over four times in the finale. Calvin Johnson fell short in his attempt to become the first player with 2,000 yards receiving in a season.

Detroit trailed 20-3 late in the first half but pulled within two and had the ball at its own 9-yard line before a three-and-out forced a punt.

The Bears ran out the last 3:40, with Cutler's 19-yard run on third down keeping the drive going.

Johnson, who broke Jerry Rice's record of 1,848 yards receiving the previous weekend, finished at 1,964 after catching five passes for 72 yards.

Detroit's Matthew Stafford went 24 of 42 for 272 with three touchdowns and an interception.

The Lions scored two straight touchdowns to make it 20-17 in the third quarter, but Chicago ? which came into the game with a league-high 40 takeaways ? forced another turnover.

Stafford's fumble gave the Bears the ball at the Detroit 13. It was the fourth time the Bears started a drive inside the Detroit 25, and they ended up kicking a field goal.

Olindo Mare added another field goal, a 20-yarder with 10:47 left in the fourth, to make it 26-17. Stafford's 9-yard touchdown pass to Brian Robiskie pulled Detroit closer, but it wasn't enough.

Cutler threw a 55-yard pass to Alshon Jeffery to the Detroit 27 on Chicago's first play from scrimmage, delighting the many Chicago fans in attendance at Ford Field. But that drive stalled, and the Bears actually had to punt after Cutler fumbled on third down and the ball was recovered back at midfield.

After the Lions kicked a field goal, Chicago struck back when Cutler swung a pass out to Earl Bennett, who made the catch behind the line of scrimmage, got a block and outran the defense for a surprisingly easy 60-yard touchdown.

Joique Bell fumbled away the ensuing kickoff, and the Bears kicked a field goal. In the second quarter, Stafford fumbled deep in his own territory. Julius Peppers recovered for Chicago, and his short return gave the Bears the ball at the 10.

After a third-down pass interference call on safety Don Carey, Matt Forte scored on a 1-yard run to make it 17-3.

The Lions weren't done giving the ball away. Tim Jennings picked off Stafford's overthrown pass, and his 31-yard return to the Detroit 23 set up another field goal.

Stafford's 25-yard scoring pass to Kris Durham with 12 seconds left in the half made it 20-10, and he threw a 10-yarder in the third to Will Heller.

Bogus Story About Instagram Losing Users - Business Insider

Facebook?s stock dropped 2.9% in its first minutes of trading this morning. Investors were likely responding to a report in the New York Post that Instagram, the photo-sharing that Facebook acquired this year, ?may have shed nearly a quarter of its daily active users? after changes to its terms of service rankled users earlier this month.

But the Post is flat-out wrong.

The story cites AppData, which tracks usage of Facebook applications like FarmVille. Some users have connected their Instagram and Facebook accounts in a way that would show up in AppData?s metrics, but?most have not. So when the Post says, ?Instagram, which peaked at 16.4 million active daily users the week it rolled out its policy change, had fallen to 12.4 million as of yesterday,? it?s only talking about a subset of Instagram users.

This subset might be representative, but it might not. The claim that Instagram has lost a quarter of its users isn?t supported by this data.

But more to the point, the drop in active daily users of Instagram?s application on Facebook occurred between Dec. 23 and Dec. 25, according to AppData. (Look for yourself!) Instagram released its new terms of use on Dec. 17, igniting controversy almost immediately, but AppData doesn?t show any significant decline in usage until Christmas.

AppData Instagram

It?s not clear what caused the drop, but the Post is misleading readers when it pegs the drop to controversy over the new terms of use. Monthly and weekly active users of Instagram?s Facebook application, meanwhile, continue to rise?according to AppData.

None of which is meant to apologize for Facebook and Instagram, which was forced to retreat from the new terms after objections to its most ambitious claims, like the ability to sell users? photos without compensation. Instagram said that clause was misinterpreted, but it seemed like an overreach that is all too common at Facebook.

Still, the idea that Instagram users are fleeing the service en masse doesn?t hold up to a gut check, and it certainly isn?t supported by the Post story, which has been regurgitated this morning on CNBC, Bloomberg TV, the Wall Street Journal, and elsewhere. Facebook?s stock is recovering as I write this, so perhaps investors are wising up to this specious claim, as well.

Gilbert Melendez will get UFC lightweight title shot, Dana White promises

No Strikeforce fighter has suffered more as a result of the dispute between Showtime and UFC president Dana White than Gilbert Melendez.

Many knowledgeable mixed martial arts experts believe the Strikeforce lightweight champion might be the best 155-pound fighter in the world. But since Zuffa's purchase of Strikeforce from Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment in March 2011, has fought just three times and hasn't gotten anywhere near a mega-event.

That is about to change with the demise of Strikeforce after its Jan. 12 show in Oklahoma City. That card will mark the final Strikeforce event as part of an agreement announced earlier this month between Zuffa and Showtime, which televises Strikeforce events.

UFC president Dana White said fighters under contract to Strikeforce would be folded into the UFC. Melendez is injured and unable to defend his title in Oklahoma City next month, so his next fight will be in the UFC.

White told reporters Thursday following the pre-fight press conference for UFC 155 that Melendez's first bout in the UFC would likely be a title shot.

"We'll see, but we'll probably bring him in and give him a title shot," White said.

As usual, White covered a slew of topics in his post-news conference scrum with reporters. Among the other gems:

? White said the UFC would put an event in Puerto Rico before 2014. The UFC last held an event in Puerto Rico in Bayamon on Feb. 16, 1996.

? He confirmed that he has begun casting for a Mexican version of "The Ultimate Fighter" and said the company is still in talk with networks there about a television deal.

The problem, he said, is not introducing the fans to the sport. Mexicans are notorious boxing fans and White said the UFC's market research has shown that there is plenty of interest among them in mixed martial arts. The issue is reaching what he believes is the proper television deal, which he admitted has been harder than expected to accomplish.

"We're dealing with some of these countries where five families run all of Mexico," White said. " ... Once we get the right deal, I know it will be big [among the Mexican fans]."

? White said the UFC's partnership with Fox and its related networks has been "unbelievable." He said Fox officials kept their promise to him and moved the U.S. version of "The Ultimate Fighter" to Tuesday nights on FX beginning with the debut of Season 17 on Jan. 22.

That season will feature light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen as the coaches.

The UFCs 18-34-year-old male demographic wasn't home to watch Seasons 15 and 16 and the ratings sank dramatically from its pre-FX days on Spike.

"I've said this to you guys a million times, but FX loved us on Friday nights," White said. "But they're good partners and they promised me [they'd change nights if it didn't work out]. They said, 'Let's try to build this on Friday to a point where you're happy with the [ratings]. If it doesn't work out, we'll move you to another night.' And they kept their word."

By going on Tuesday, the UFC will avoid competing directly with Bellator's reality series, which will be held on Thursdays on Spike starting Jan. 17.

? White said 2012 was a good year for the company despite its unbelievable rash of injuries. He said pay-per-view numbers were lower than in 2011, but said the drop wasn't alarming and was not unexpected given the major issues with injuries the company experienced.

Obama Weekly Address: Washington Politics Must Not Get In The Way Of "America's Progress"

White House: President Obama urges Congress to meet its deadlines and responsibilities, protect the middle class from an income tax hike, and lay the groundwork for future progress on more economic growth and deficit reduction.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Hello Everybody. For the past couple months, I?ve been working with people in both parties ? with the help of business leaders and ordinary Americans ? to come together around a plan to grow the economy and shrink our deficits.

It?s a balanced plan ? one that would protect the middle class, cut spending in a responsible way, and ask the wealthiest Americans to pay a little more. And I?ll keep working with anybody who?s serious about getting a comprehensive plan like this done ? because it?s the right thing to do for our economic growth.

But we?re now at the point where, in just a couple days, the law says that every American?s tax rates are going up. Every American?s paycheck will get a lot smaller. And that would be the wrong thing to do for our economy. It would hurt middle-class families, and it would hurt the businesses that depend on your spending.

And Congress can prevent it from happening, if they act now. Leaders in Congress are working on a way to prevent this tax hike on the middle class, and I believe we may be able to reach an agreement that can pass both houses in time.

But if an agreement isn?t reached in time, then I?ll urge the Senate to hold an up-or-down vote on a basic package that protects the middle class from an income tax hike, extends vital unemployment insurance for Americans looking for a job, and lays the groundwork for future progress on more economic growth and deficit reduction.

I believe such a proposal could pass both houses with bipartisan majorities ? as long as these leaders allow it to come to a vote. If they still want to vote no, and let this tax hike hit the middle class, that?s their prerogative ? but they should let everyone vote. That?s the way this is supposed to work.

We just can?t afford a politically self-inflicted wound to our economy. The economy is growing, but keeping it that way means that the folks you sent to Washington have to do their jobs. The housing market is healing, but that could stall if folks are seeing smaller paychecks. The unemployment rate is the lowest it?s been since 2008, but already, families and businesses are starting to hold back because of the dysfunction they see in Washington.

You meet your deadlines and your responsibilities every day. The folks you sent here to serve should do the same. We cannot let Washington politics get in the way of America?s progress. We?ve got to do what it takes to protect the middle class, grow this economy, and move our country forward.

Thanks, everybody.

The Year in Five Favorite Films

People love making lists, and filmmakers are no different. Each year we talk to a host of different people as part of our enduring Five Favorite Films feature, in which -- stay with us on this one -- we ask the talent to pick their all-time five favorite films. Or, as the case may be, the ones that they're currently into, have inspired their latest project, or just randomly tumble from their minds and into the ether in an unchecked stream of consciousness. Here then, we thought we'd have a quick look back at some of the stats and highlights of 2012...

Number of "people" we interviewed this year: 46. As is the way, we covered everyone from acclaimed directors to the hottest young actors to comedians, singing legends, mixed martial arts stars and wrongly-convicted victims of the judicial process. Next year: Craft services, fluffers and inanimate carbon rods weigh in with their movie picks. Number of those that were actually beer-drinking stuffed bears: One. That'd be Ted, eponymous star of Seth MacFarlane's comedy hit. And we're fairly sure he wasn't sober. Unusually, he didn't select any of Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy for his list, but anyone -- man or beast -- who picks Road House is alright by us.

Most popular film selected: Sorry kids, but The Godfather remains the enduring champ in this category. Besides the fact that it's, you know, a masterpiece of American cinema, it's also beloved by both directors and actors across multiple generations. They just keep picking it. Not far behind, however, were Coppola's The Godfather, Part II (no surprises there), Hal Ashby's Harold and Maude, the Archers' A Matter of Life and Death, Mike Nichols' The Graduate, Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove, Milos Forman's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's The Lives of Others. Gentlemen Broncos also received some much-overdue love, but Rotten Tomatoes editors' picks were, sadly, disqualified from inclusion.

Most popular vintner: Francis Ford Coppola (8 votes) takes the honor on the strength of the first two Godfather films, though he only received one vote elsewhere (for Dracula). His pinot noir is a tasty drop, by the way. Most popular directors not actively engaged in wine production: Stanley Kubrick and Hal Ashby (6 votes apiece) were picked across a distinct variety of their films (Ashby, in particular, got more mentions than any other director), followed by the peerless Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (5 votes), some dudes called Steven Spielberg (4 votes), Martin Scorsese (4 votes), and Woody Allen (4 votes) and the eccentric Danish ruffian Nicolas Winding Refn (also 4 votes).

Most popular decade for movie picks: Either memories are short or we're basking in a New Golden Age of Visionary Cinema (cough), because the 2000s and those ever-beloved 1970s were tied for the most votes in this category -- each scored 45 nods. The '90s were next with 40 votes, followed by the '80s (32 votes) and the '60s (26 votes). Once again, Edison and the Lumi?re brothers were robbed. The oldest movie on anyone's list: Charlie Chaplin's The Kid, from 1921, which was picked by Tony Bennett. The most recent: 2011's Oscar-nominated Bullhead, released here in 2012 and chosen by Charlie Hunnam.

Best explanation for a choice: Ladies, if you've got your sights set on dating Daniel Radcliffe, you'd best be a fan of Jason and the Argonauts. "Within the first six months of a relationship of any girl that I'm with, I have to make her watch that film -- and if she doesn't react the way I'd like, then that's kind of a deal-breaker. If you don't like Harryhausen's stop-motion then you are not going to be in my life." We're right there with you on that one, Harry. Most useful piece of advice given: No drugs available? Pop some Mary Poppins, says cheerful British character actor Timothy Spall. "If you haven't got any illegal drugs, put that on and you'll be alright." So that's what "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" is all about, then.

The year's boldest selection: You have to salute Megan Fox, who wasn't afraid to tempt the gods of movie snobbery by repping for not just one, but all three of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films. The list with the most noticeable absence of The Shawshank Redemption: We were wondering whether West Memphis Three member Damien Echols, who spent 18 years in the slammer on a false murder rap, would name the 1994 tale of hard-won emancipation among his faves. He didn't, but he did tell us just how much they did play IMDb's Greatest Movie Ever while he was in prison. Ouch. Wait, no love for Star Wars this year? Sorry George, not this time around. But we did chat with Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi writer -- and super-informed cinephile -- Lawrence Kasdan, who shared some of his memories working with Lucas and co. And Ewan McGregor answered the phone for his interview in an Obi-wan Kenobi voice. True story.

Best themed list: Filmmaker-actor Mark Duplass dropped in to promote his latest movie with a very tastefully-curated sibling-themed list, which included You Can Count on Me, Say Anything... and Adaptation. Then, his brother Jay rolled by a couple of weeks later and impressed everyone by including Dumb and Dumber -- only one of the greatest comedies of all time -- as part of his five faves list. Now that's good taste, sir. Award for Consistency: That would go to director Joe Dante, who we polled in 2010 and again this year. Three of his picks (Once Upon a Time in the West, Touch of Evil and The Bride of Frankenstein) were identical -- despite two years between lists. Well played, Joe. Not that we were trying to catch you out or anything.

Most diverse list: Anna Kendrick, whose tastes ran from Ingmar Bergman's Winter Light to not-Ingmar-Bergman's Wet Hot American Summer. As a fan of broad American comedies himself, the great Swedish auteur would surely have approved. Most entertaining ramble: Kathleen Turner, bless, while clearly a stranger to making movie lists, soldiered on toward an extraordinarily random selection -- which not only included one of her own movies, but is likely the only place (this side of hell) that you'll see Shrek and Ken Russell side-by-side. She did it all in that voice, too. Most liberal definition of "five" favorite films: Elizabeth Banks decided she'd flout the system by selecting "Any Barbra Streisand Musical -- and Flashdance" as her last pick. She won't be asked back. (We're kidding, Elizabeth, we really like you.)

The "I'd like to thank my director" pick: This is why Jennifer Lawrence is such a savvy young star. The Hunger Games actress gave a big shout out to I Heart Huckabees in her list, which was directed by... her Silver Linings Playbook helmer David O. Russell. You guys should totally hang out and stuff: Speaking of The Hunger Games, Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson had more in common than just being co-stars: Both picked Paul Newman's Cool Hand Luke in their fives, while Hutcherson also named Harrelson's own White Men Can't Jump. "I think he's got good taste," Woody conferred. But we're not worried about these two at all, honestly: Who knew that Kramer vs. Kramer was the turbulent Oscar-winning divorce workout that brings people together? It was in John Krasinski's five faves a couple of years back, and this year his gal Emily Blunt also picked the movie for her all-time list. There's a lesson in there somewhere.

Best list by the offspring of a former Genesis drummer: We're going to have to go with Mirror Mirror star Lily Collins on this one; though her pick of dad's tunes might not be the one you'd have expected. Most violent list from a Wes Anderson cast member: At all of 12 years old, erstwhile Penzance island Eagle Scout Jared Gilman is already hardening his tender mind with The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Kick-Ass and Drive (oh how the kids love Drive). Then again, Anderson himself selected A Clockwork Orange, so perhaps his sets aren't as peacefully picturesque as one might imagine...The James Cameron Award for Achievement in the Field of Brevity: Come on down, Tony Bennett, who dispatched his five favorites in a blisteringly efficient 28 words. That's how you stay smooth, folks.

A better pencil sharpener? Inventor dreams of erasing life's annoyances

2 hrs.

Long lines at amusement parks. Traffic stalled at rush hour. Cycling uphill. To most of us, these are just minor problems we face in an otherwise comfortable existence.?To Anwar Farooq, they are personal call-outs, challenges that he must answer with his own ingenuity. These days, the math?teacher and habitual?inventor is wrestling with the age-old problem of the?pencil sharpener.

"When I saw my students struggling with the regular pencil sharpener, I honestly knew that there must be an alternate approach, so I started thinking," Farooq, who teaches?at Maywood Academy,?southeast of Los Angeles, told NBC News.

That's not the first time Farooq "started thinking."

His inventions, spanning 1986 to now, may?seem whimsical at first, but on closer inspection are like early ancestors of devices in use today. There's a bike where your pedaling is boosted by an air compressor, for instance. If you replace the air compressor with an electric motor, you get today's battery-powered bikes.

There's?the Robocam, a?remote-controlled camera platform that's a precursor to telepresence robots and smartphone?videoconferencing apps alike.

For those annoying amusement park or movie theater?lines, Farooq proposes a chain of connected, moving chairs.?You take a load off, enjoy the?built-in entertainment system, and before long, it's your turn to get up and enjoy the ride or show. He calls it Waiting Is Fun.?It may seem far-fetched?... until Disney goes and installs one in Tomorrowland.

The idea Farooq seems most proud of is the?Rapid Commute. Cars traveling from the outskirts of a city?drive right onto a high-speed train, as if they were boarding a ferry boat. The train then brings them to a central location downtown, where they disembark. Next month he will be presenting it to the Transportation Research Board, an off-shoot of the non-profit?National Research Council,?at its annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

And then there's the?Quick N Silent pencil sharpener.?

* * *

Pencil sharpeners are, in fact, one of the few classroom technologies that have?not?experienced a radical redesign in the past century. The most common type of institutional sharpener, the hand-cranked type you can still see?mounted to a wall or the teacher's table in classrooms all over the world,?was introduced in 1904.

Sure, electric versions have been introduced, but?the cylindrical mills rotating in "planetary" fashion within?are still dominant ? despite the inconsistency of their results.

Nevertheless, when Farooq wrestled with how to modernize the?pencil sharpener, he didn't look to some?laser that could hone the tip of a pencil with micron-level precision. Instead, he found inspiration in the distant?past.

"I remembered that people carried pocket knives and they just used those to sharpen pencils quietly and efficiently."

He set to work on the new machine based on the same principles.

* * *

Farooq was always an inventor at heart, but he told us that, growing up in Pakistan, he never had a chance to exercise his creative capabilities. "Even if I had an idea, we were from the lower middle class, so we didn't have any money to do anything," he told us. "My biggest break is that I came to a country like America ??and now I can do those things I desire."

But even after moving to the U.S. in the 1970s, inventing hasn't been exactly easy for Farooq. In fact, following his dreams can at times be something of an expensive habit. "Of course it's a hardship to me and tight financially," he admitted. "My wife says, 'Why don't you take up gambling?'"

At least to him, though, the cost is worth it.?"I live for that, that excitement of finding something, of discovering something." He points out that the famed inventor Nicola Tesla died a poor man, but now they're building a Tesla?museum. Farooq doesn't expect a museum, but he does hope that his inventions will outlast him.

It may be his latest baby, the pencil sharpener,?that lives on. Even in our increasingly?digital world, Farooq feels strongly that pencil and paper, as?a medium for recording thoughts and images, won't disappear any time soon.?"Yes, it is old and unglamorous technology, but it's foolproof and works as advertised."

Its biggest asset is its low cost: "It's cheap enough to be owned by almost anyone in the world," he said.

When he finally figured out how to implement the pocket-knife method of sharpening, Farooq built a mock-up and?patented his design.

His prototype doesn't grind, like the rotary sharpeners in classrooms?worldwide. Nor does it shave around the edge, like the small twisty?single-blade sharpeners that predate the rotary type. Instead, it uses multiple blades to whittle down the edge from all sides at once. True to its name, the blades slice down the end of the pencil, exposing a sharp tip and plenty of lead in a single, silent pass.

Farooq is looking for funding to start manufacturing the device, which he has continually modified over the last few years in his spare time.?A crowd-funding attempt at?Fundageek, a website for inventors, has not produced much income. But he intends to put a more complete version of the device up for consideration on Indiegogo, a larger platform for collecting funding.

In the meantime, Farooq will keep on inventing. His own modest?website lists two things ? Personal Safety 360 and GPS Live Cam ??that he isn't ready to discuss publicly.

"When I came to this country,?I wanted to do something positive, a legacy to leave behind." Whether his inventions find widespread adoption or not, Farooq's insatiable inventor's spirit may continue to inspire the kids in his classroom ??as well as those who encounter him through his growing portfolio.

5 Unique and Profitable Home Based Businesses | Small Business ...

December 27th, 2012 by admin Leave a reply ?

5 Unique and Profitable Home Based Businesses ImageHave you been sifting through the piles of information on home businesses, and found that you?ve come up with nothing that sounds like you? In the faceless world of the Internet and research books, it can seem that the choices for home based businesses are quite bland. However, with a little left-brained thinking (creativity!) and some thought, you might be able to come up with a profitable home business idea that not only rakes in the dough, but that you also enjoy immensely. Here are some ideas to get you started:

1. Freelance Fashion Designer: Do you love to knit, sew or make jewelry? There is a huge market for unique, fashionable items online today, particularly with the younger generations that are tired of cookie-cutter looks. Promote your business to friends, family and through online marketing programs.

2. Event Planner: If you have an eye for detail and impeccable taste, this may be the home business option for you. Most of the planning can be run out of your home office, yet still allow you to connect with clients up front.

3. Antique and Rare Auto Finder: Calling all car lovers! For those who find yourselves drooling over Jay Leno?s car collection, think about offering your services to others by hooking people up with the cars of their dreams, while charging a 5 to 10% commission.

4. Virtual Assistant: Organized, word-savvy administrative assistants ? you may finally have a chance to be your own boss! Many companies are now paying freelance administrative assistants, called ?virtual assistants? to complete typing, faxing and other office tasks for a price. These jobs usually pay between $20 and $40 per hour.

5. Brown Bag Lunch Maker: There are lots of parents out there who can?t find the time to make nutritious lunches for their kids, even though they want to keep them healthy and fit. If you are a good cook with excellent nutritional values, think about starting a lunch making company, where you deliver brown bag lunches to children in the neighborhood on a month-by-month basis.

Armageddon !!!

Movies that deal with the Armageddon caused by the impact of a meteorite on earth have the great advantage that they can almost completely define the scenario ? until now almost no references exist how such an event would occur in reality.

Large impacts were relatively rare in historic times; the most famous (and still controversial) is the Tunguska event in 1908. However because of the remoteness of the Siberian taiga the destruction and human fatalities were limited.
Interests on this kind of catastrophe arouse late, only in the mid 20th century the possibility that earth can be hit by large chunks of extraterrestrial material became widely accepted, when in 1960 the geologist Eugene Shoemaker settled the debate about the origin of a large crater in Arizona, confirming an older hypothesis that it was not of volcanic origin but formed 50.000 years ago by an impact.

In 1994 the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacted on Jupiter, the event followed by most mass media. Maybe influenced by the great interest of the public, since 1997 various movies on meteorites have been released.
An advantage for a disaster movie to deal with an impact is the supposed catastrophic effects, especially of large objects, which can affect the entire surface of earth. However a disadvantage is the supposedly short duration of the disintegration and explosion of the extraterrestrial body. A movie writer has to put the catastrophic event at the end of the movie and fill the rest with a love story or personal tragedies.

?Asteroid? (1997) is a cheap TV production with many elements found in similar disaster movies. After the discovery of the approaching asteroid some laser-beams are used to destroy it. However some fragments reach earth and still manage to destroy various cities.

In the more expensive ?Armageddon? (released in 1998 with a 140 million dollars budget) a crew of stereotypically characters and an atomic bomb are send onto the approaching asteroid with the estimated ?size of Texas?. The bomb is planted in just 250m depth on a more than 1.000km large mass ? why even bother to drill? Also by detonating the bomb and considering the inertia of the asteroid, simply a rain of minor chunks would bombard earth ? causing anyway worldwide devastation.
The introduction of the movie also mentions the Chicxulub-impact (?it happened in the past, it will happen again?), however showing earth with the modern conformation of continents and oceans (according to plate tectonics a geologic impossibility).

Also the ?Super Mario Bros.? movie (1993) starts with the premise of the Chicxulub-impact. However here the cosmic rock rips apart the space-time-continuum and produces an alternative earth, still ruled by anthropomorphic descendants of the dinosaurs.

?Deep Impact? (1998 with a 75 million dollars budget) was released 2 months before ?Armageddon? and is in some parts more accurate than the later movie. Also in ?Deep Impact? atomic bombs are used to prevent the imminent impact of an 11km large comet, but again some fragments arrive to earth, killing millions of people.

?Meteorites!? is another TV-production from 1998 dealing with a shower of meteorites which cause destruction in a small American town. ?Tycus? (1998) and ?The Apocalypse? (surprisingly released in 1997) are also both cheap productions intended for the video-market and dealing somehow with comets. ?Meteor Apocalypse? (2009) was produced and distributed by ?The Asylum Films?, a company famous for their movie rip-offs. Here the melting ice from a comet contaminates the groundwater of earth.

A much earlier movie is ?Meteor? (1979), with an only 8km in diameter large meteorite that will hit earth in just six days. To build up suspense smaller chunks (it seems that meteorites in movies never space travel alone, however we could assume that gravitational forces split up a larger asteroid/comet, like Shoemaker-Levy 9) hit earth first. Again rockets are used to blast the nearby meteor into pieces, but again chunks fall on earth causing again havoc. The special effects are terrifying cheap, even considering the year of release. This movie mentions also the origin of the idea to use bombs to stop the meteor: ?Project Icarus?, developed in 1968, was an assignment by Professor Paul Sandorff for a group of MIT graduate students to design a way to deflect the asteroid ?1566 Icarus?.

Appropriately in the movie ?When Worlds Collide? (1951), predating ?Project Icarus? and where an entire planet is approaching earth, humanity tries to build a space ark to evacuate the doomed world.

?The Day The Sky Exploded? (1958) is an Italian science-fiction story with a slightly modified version of the asteroid-scenario: here a lostspaceship with an atomic engine first explodes inside an swarm of asteroids, changing the orbit of the swarm towards earth.? To prevent the final impact all nations of earth fire contemporary their nuclear weapons to the sky.

It?s interesting to note that movies produced before 1960 (when most research on impacts were done) use mostly planets rather than asteroids as threat for earth.

?Planet on the Prowl? (1966) is another Italian movie, following the tradition of planet-movies, however here it is the gravitational force that unleashes storms, waves and disasters on earth. A team is send into space to destroy the planet, but here they discover that the celestial body is a living (!) cybernetic organism that will not simply surrender without fight?
A very similar plot was already used by director Antonio Margheriti in ?Battle of the Worlds? (1961), where the mainframe of an alien spaceship, mimicking a planet, is attacking earth?

Higgs boson announcement awaited

Scientists at Europe's CERN research center said Wednesday that they may be able to definitively announce at a conference next March that they had discovered the elusive Higgs boson.

But they dismissed suggestions circulating widely on blogs and even in some science journals that instead of just one type of the elementary particle they might have found a pair.

CERN researchers said in July they had found what appeared to be the particle that gives mass to matter, as imagined and named half a century ago by theoretical physicist Peter Higgs. But they stopped short of saying for sure it was the Higgs boson, pending further research.

"The latest data we have on this thing we have been watching for the past few months show that it is not simply 'like a Higgs' but is very like a Higgs," said Oliver Buechmuller of the CMS team at CERN's Large Hadron Collider.

    3. Huge 'sea monster' ruled ancient rivers
    4. Higgs boson announcement awaited

"The way things are going, by the Moriond meeting we may be able to stop calling it Higgs-like and finally say it is the Higgs," he told Reuters, referring to the annual gathering that will take place at the Italian Alpine resort of La Thuile, 120 kilometers (75 miles) from CERN, on March 2-9.

Suggestions that there may be two Higgs, a particle that made formation of the universe possible after the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago, emerged after a progress report by CERN scientists last week. Its definitive discovery that would almost certainly win a Nobel Prize.

Commentators, including one in the journal Scientific American, said differing measurements, so far unexplained, of the new boson's mass that were recorded by ATLAS ? a parallel but separate research team to CMS at CERN ? indicated there might be twin particles.

"That is quite an exaggeration," said Pauline Gagnon, a scientist with ATLAS. "The facts are so much simpler: we measure one quantity in two different ways and obtain two slightly different answers.

"However, when we combine all the information, we clearly get only one value. Since we have checked all other possibilities, it really looks like a statistical fluctuation. Such things happen."

Buechmueller, whose CMS team found no such variation in their measurements, said he agreed there was no special relevance in the ATLAS discrepancy. "It will probably disappear when more data is in and analyzed," he added.

The $10 billion Large Hadron Collider, a 27-km (17-mile) circular construct deep under the Franco-Swiss border, will shut down for about two years in February to allow a doubling of its power and its capacity to probe cosmic mysteries.

Unhealthy snacks may increase colon cancer risk | MNN - Mother ...

Experts estimate that about three out of every 100 colon cancers are caused by Lynch syndrome, an inherited condition that increases the risk of colon cancer and other cancers. The syndrome affects up to one in 660 people.

?

There have been many studies investigating the association between specific foods and colorectal cancer in general, now a new study published in Cancer, the journal of the American Cancer Society, looks at food factors in relation to colorectal cancer in patients with Lynch syndrome.

?

The researchers, Akke Botma, PhD, MSc, of the Wageningen University in the Netherlands, and her colleagues found that indulging in snack foods may increase cancer risk in people with Lynch Syndrome.

?

"We saw that Lynch syndrome patients who had an eating pattern with higher intakes of snack foods ? like fast-food snacks, chips or fried snacks ? were twice as likely to develop these polyps as Lynch Syndrome patients having a pattern with lower intakes of snack foods," said Botma.

?

Prior to this study, the researchers found that smoking and obesity may also heighten the chance of developing colorectal tumors among people with Lynch Syndrome, which suggests that even though they have inherited the high risk of developing cancer, it may be possible to offset this risk by adopting a healthy lifestyle, including cutting back on junk food.

Secrets to Success: 4D Data Centres | Business Matters

We talk to David Barker founder of 4D Data Centres, a data centre and network operator based in Surrey.

What is your start-up story?
I started 4D in 1999 when I was 14, after failing to make it in school magazine publishing. Initially I offered web design services and launched a search engine portal before Google existed. I soon realised that my web design clients needed hosting for their sites, so I opened a reseller account at ?30 per month to offer web hosting.

Dealing with larger companies as a teenager was a challenge, but thankfully the majority of business was conducted over email and the phone. Slowly the brand built up trust as the number of clients increased (a lot through word of mouth ? the best advertising you can get when starting up).

It continued to grow and at 17 I left the sixth form to branch out into other areas of hosting services by offering dedicated servers and also subleasing space in Docklands and Heathrow to bigger clients. My mum would drive me to the data centre in the dead of night, before I had a car; then would hang around until I?d fixed whatever had gone wrong!
Then in 2007, I found an angel investor and bought my own data centre, 4D Surrey. The funding also provided working capital to enable the rapid growth 4D has enjoyed over the past five years.

What is your turnover, employee numbers etc compared to previous years?
We are currently seeing growth of around 40% year-on-year. In 2007, when we opened our first data centre, the company turnover was ?250,000 with three employees, while by 2012 our turnover had increased to ?3m with 27 employees.

What products or services to you provide? What problem does your company solve? What is your USP?
The main service that 4D provides is a secure environment for clients? servers and their data, including on-site security, backup power and eco-friendly air-conditioning. We have highly qualified engineers available 24/7 providing remote support services to clients. This removes the need for companies to host these systems in-house or provide the ancillary services (backup power, security, air conditioning, etc) required for a small number of machines.

In addition to colocation (i.e. lots of SMEs hosting their servers and storage within our building) 4D also provides a range of hosted services (e.g. cloud servers, online backup, Exchange, etc.) and network services (e.g. ultra-fast leased lines, ADSL, etc) which are supported by the technical engineers we already have on-site.

Our USPs include our green credentials and our staff. We have one of the lowest carbon footprints of any data centre, and everyone from the security guards to the engineers gives customers a friendly and professional service that we are frequently complemented on.

Any thoughts on the future of your company ?
The primary growth plans are to continue providing high quality colocation services from 4D Surrey and other data centres in Docklands, City of London and Kent. To meet growth levels we plan to open a second facility in Surrey within the next two years.

To help diversify our growth we have launched a range of connectivity products in 2012 providing high quality business internet services, as well connecting a client?s office back into the servers which are hosted within one of our data centres.

In 2013 4D will offer more managed services and cloud services, which we see as high growth areas for us.

What have you done to make sure you get the right people with the right skills in place?
Most of our first line support engineers came to work for 4D directly out of university or school with little experience or formal qualifications, but with a genuine interest in IT outside work. We?re looking for people who have a real passion for resolving problems and understanding a client?s requirements first time. This is the core of our support ethos and sets 4D apart from other providers.

As part of their induction training our staff complete an intensive 8 week programme and are encouraged to do further training for technical qualifications so they stay up-to-date. As a result they rapidly become highly qualified in terms of both the theory and practical delivery of data centre services.

Do you have any tips for managing suppliers and customers effectively?
It?s important to pay suppliers on-time in order to build up a good credit history and goodwill that may be needed at short notice.

You should also actively manage your customers. If you?re not speaking to your clients you are missing out on additional business, on feedback on your services and keeping a loyal business relationship. Without communication you risk not hearing from a customer unless something goes wrong!

And finance and cash-flow tips?
A third of new businesses fail in the first three years and it?s almost always the result of running out of cash. As well as having working capital to cover early stage losses (especially if you have sunk costs in providing your service), it?s imperative to collect invoice payment on the due date. If you don?t, you are bank rolling your customers. If cash is king for an established, successful business, it?s the emperor for the start-up.

What main secrets of success do you think entrepreneurs more generally need to know?
The obvious one is that you have to love what you?re doing; it?s the only way you will be able to work 18+ hours a day in the early years without burning out!

Entrepreneurs also need to remember to make some money! A lot of tech start-ups today rely on attractive adverts to make money and unfortunately there isn?t enough advertising money to go around (just look at Facebook and its problem with monetising adverts). Find something that you can charge for, whether it?s the product itself, an upgrade for functionality, or an ?in-app? purchase. If you can get subscription revenue then even better as it?s a guaranteed income that will give your company more value when trying to raise investment or a loan.

Any advice for the Government?
The Government is trying all sorts of initiatives but there needs to be a change in culture over funding (both early stage and venture), as the banks aren?t supporting new businesses because they are wary of past failures. Crowd-funding and other peer-to-peer lending are emerging as oases of capital for seed funding and smaller projects, but we?ve yet to see a long-term business come out of these and the potential return on investment issues this could cause for thousands of smaller investors in a fast growing company.?

Health and Fitness Talk ? Prevent Heart Disease

preventing it by following some simple suggestions and by adopting a healthy lifestyle you can help yourself considerably regardless of past family history, age or sex.

  • Do not smoke or use tobacco. Smoking is one of the primary risk factors in developing cardiovascular disease. ?All the harsh chemicals that are in a cigarette can lead to a narrowing of the arteries or atherosclerosis which will eventually lead to heart attack. Also the nicotine in cigarettes or any tobacco product causes your heart to work harder because it narrows your blood vessels and increases your heart rate and blood pressure and the carbon monoxide replaces the oxygen in your blood causing your heart to work harder to supply oxygen to your blood. ?Women who are pregnant or taking birth control pills should not smoke either as their risk of a heart attack is greater in women who do not smoke. Incredibly enough, when a person quits smoking their chances of heart disease drops by dramatically within one year.
  • You must exercise for at least 30 minutes per day. ?Daily exercise will reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and help you control your weight better. Physical exercise will allow you to control your weight and make your heart stronger and will also allow your blood vessels to open more thus allowing more blood to enter your heart and this is always a very good thing because the more blood that your heart can efficiently pump through your body the better you will be altogether. ?Daily exercise will also help you in lowering your blood pressure, lower high cholesterol and diabetes. Stress will be a thing of the past as a good workout eliminates stress which is a major factor of heart disease. Think outside the box and take up activities such as housekeeping, gardening, walking the dog or anything that includes physical activity as these will keep you more motivated and on track in your daily exercise chores.
  • Drink plenty of water. Water is the number one fuel source for your heart, so the more water you drink the more fuel your heart has to work with and the better the circulation and performance. According to a new study, people who drink five or more glasses of water per day can lower their risk of a fatal heart attack when compared to those who drank less than two glasses of water per day.? Drinking energy drinks and soft drinks is incredibly dangerous for your heart as these types of drinks actually dehydrate you because of the high amounts of sugars, caffeine and other toxic chemicals. ?Dehydration will increase plasma and blood viscosity which is a major factor of cardiovascular heart disease.

A heart attack can seriously affect your life in a very serious way and if some care and attention is paid to these simple suggestions you should be able to enjoy a better quality of life and definitely outlive those who do not take care of themselves.

White House: Obama remains committed to assault weapons ban ...

President Barack Obama wipes his eye as he speaks about the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, in the briefing room of the White House in Washington. (AP photo)

WASHINGTON (CNN) ? The White House said President Barack Obama supports reinstatement of a federal ban on assault weapons ? a position he took in the 2008 campaign but failed to press during his first term.

?It does remain a commitment of his,? presidential spokesman Jay Carney told reporters as the nation reeled from a mass shooting in Connecticut that mainly killed school children.

An emotional Obama did not address that issue directly in a televised statement from the White House on the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown that killed 26 people but said something had to be done.

?We?re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics,? said Obama, the father of two girls.

He wiped away tears when he spoke of the ?beautiful little kids? killed in the massacre.

Police recovered three weapons from the scene: a semiautomatic .223-caliber rifle made by Bushmaster, a Glock and a Sig Sauer, both handguns, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

Others also spoke out for a strong federal response.

?We cannot simply accept this as a routine product of modern American life. If now is not the time to have a serious discussion about gun control and the epidemic of gun violence plaguing our society, I don?t know when is,? Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-New York, said in a statement.

Congress approved a ban on assault weapons in 1994. The prohibition, which expired in 2004, did not eliminate them, but restricted their features, limiting magazine capacity to 10 rounds and regulating pistol grips, bayonet attachments and flash suppressors.

Gun rights generally divide Americans.

A Pew poll conducted after the 2011 assassination attempt on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona, that killed six other people, found that 49% of Americans said it was ?more important to protect the rights of Americans to own guns,? while 46% said it was ?more important to control gun ownership.?

But a survey conducted by CNN/ORC International in August shortly after the deadly theater mass shooting earlier this year in Aurora, Colorado, found that 76% of those surveyed believe ?there should be some restrictions on owning guns.?

Obama supported a platform while running for president in 2008 that included reinstating the assault weapons ban, but has largely avoided the issue of gun control during his first term.

He wrote an opinion piece two months after the Giffords shooting acknowledging the importance of the Second Amendment right to bear arms and called for a ?focus? on ?effective steps that will actually keep those irresponsible, law-breaking few from getting their hands on a gun in the first place.?

Obama said at a presidential debate in October that he wanted a ?broader conversation? in general about reducing gun violence.

?Part of it is seeing if we can get an assault weapons ban reintroduced,? he said.

The National Rifle Association, which advocates for gun rights, said in a statement it would not have anny comment on the Connecticut shooting ?until the facts are thoroughly known.?

Kristin Goss, an associate professor of public policy and political science at Duke University and author of ?Disarmed: The Missing Movement for Gun Control in America? earlier this year that the pro gun control side of the issue ?has struggled to come up with a compelling narrative? to convince more people to support stricter gun laws.

?For a long time, these gun violence rates and massacres speak for themselves. They relied on that to make the case but were up against a very powerful but very well disciplined and skillful army that was good at taking those arguments apart,? Goss said.

By Halimah Abdullah, CNN. CNN?s Jessica Yellin and Tom Cohen contributed to this report.
