Plenty of people this weekend are expected to visit the Christiansburg Recreation Center and walk away with plans on how to improve their homes.

Montgomery County Public Schools hopes some also walk away with plans on how to improve their futures.
For the second straight year, the county?s Career and Technical Education program has partnered with the New River Valley Home Builders? Association to provide information and guidance to students, parents and general public during the NRVHBA?s Home Expo.

On Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., each of CTE?s 20 sixth- through 12th-grade programs will be represented, along with career coaches and guidance counselors, to provide information about the programs and help explore the possibilities within the programs for current and potential students.

?The hope is to let the public know what opportunities we have in the schools,? said Montgomery County CTE Supervisor Rick Weaver.
He added that one of the main goals of CTE?s time there was to help students become aware of career opportunities in this area and help them develop a career path.

To help accomplish this, students will be invited to participate in a special career activity, in which they will be asking vendors specific provided questions in regards to careers available within the vendor?s company.
Once the information is retrieved, the students will have the opportunity to talk with either a career coach or guidance counselor and figure out which of the county?s programs and which school courses could help them take steps toward the career they researched.

As a perk, once the student has completed the activity, they will receive a small prize and also be entered into a drawing for an Apple Ipod.
Attendees will also be encouraged to visit the individual stations set up by each of the county?s programs, many of which will include examples of student work.

One of those examples will be Christiansburg senior Thomas Brumfield?s working wood stove, which he crafted in welding class.

Brumfield said he would encourage other students to explore the career and technical courses because even if the skills students learn don?t lead to a career, they will be useful in everyday life.

While some students? work will be featured as examples, others will be put to use that day.

Christiansburg business students Taylor Layton and Elaine Bland created an over 12 page booklet on the programs for the event using Abode InDesign, while their classmates Cheyenne Davis, Taylor Helms and Kayla Beauprez created a tri-fold display for the department.

Weaver said he believes highlighting such opportunities students in the county have will help them take full advantage of their time in the school system.

?We want kids thinking about their future,? Weaver said. ?Not just riding their time out in school.?
