About the Position:
This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the
pleasure of the President.
Under the general direction of the Vice President for University Advancement, the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications develops and manages the university marketing, branding and communications plan utilizing innovative, cutting-edge strategies. The position oversees the university website and social media presence; plans and executes internal and external communications; oversees fundraising communications; publishes the university's flagship magazine, Washington Square; and provides design, editorial and other communications services for a wide variety of stakeholders throughout the campus and broader community.
The AVP is responsible for implementing a university-wide integrated marketing and communications plan that will positively impact the University's mission, goals, strategic objectives, and constituency relations in alignment with the campus' Vision 2017. In addition, the AVP advises campus executives on innovative communications and builds working partnerships with campus leaders and stakeholders including college deans, faculty members, and the broader community.
Key responsibilities for the position are to:
- Develop, implement and measure results from an innovative, cutting-edge marketing and branding strategy that effectively positions and provides visibility for San Jose State in the region.
- Manage a talented team of marketing and communications staff.
- Leveraging emerging trends and principles in the industry, create and promote the use of key university messages and ensure campus-wide commitment to the university's brand identity.
- Manage the university's print, digital, web and social media presence for marketing, branding, and communications.
- Provide leadership, strategic direction and execution of campaign and other development communications.
- Work collaboratively with the public affairs team on advocacy and emergency communications.
- Serve as speechwriter for the president and for the other top administrators as needed.
- A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university is required.
- Ten years of progressive marketing, communication and branding experience is required; five of which is at the senior level with demonstrated background in management and leadership.
- Experience in innovative marketing strategies that utilize social media and web services.
- Experience in managing complicated assignments with multiple contributors, editors, and stakeholders in a highly organized fashion.
- Specialized skills to direct a marketing program, including the development of strategic marketing plans for promoting the image of the university, producing publications, managing and supervising the operation of a fast-paced unit, and managing cooperative working relationships with students, staff, faculty and alumni.
- Strong writing skills in a variety of formats, including strategic communications plans that include timelines and deliverables, messaging documents, website or digital media-friendly content.
- Expertise in and experience working with new and emerging media outlets, including blogs and social media.
- Thorough knowledge of feature writing, magazine production, procedures and practices, and communication and dissemination techniques and methods.
- Knowledge of design as a communication tool; understanding of how design supports key messages and effective communication overall.
- Knowledge of web trends as well as an understanding of the role these technologies play in overall communications.
- Knowledge of software applications such as: Microsoft Word, database management and design tools.
- Knowledge of development and campaign communications, publications and marketing techniques.
- Demonstrated interest in and familiarity with public higher education.
- Ability to apply principles and practices, especially as applied in a college or university.
- Ability to effectively present ideas and concepts in written and presentation formats as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
- Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintain them over time.
- Ability to work with representatives from public and private entities and handle potentially sensitive situations.
- Ability to observe, receive, and obtain information from all relevant sources; analyze information and evaluate results to choose and present the best solution and solve problems.

- Ability to keep management informed and aware of public attitudes and the concerns of the many organizations, groups and stakeholders.
