Some business opportunities are certainly better than others, and some financial markets are definitely larger than others. When it comes to the forex market, you?re dealing with the world?s largest currency trading platform. Coming up are some essential tips that will help you to exploit the numerous opportunities for financial gain which exist in Forex.
Stick to currency pairs that are traded often. Trading within common currency pairings gives you the ability to make trades quickly with other people who are in the same market. Trading in less common currencies makes it hard to buy and sell at the right times.
Share your trading techniques with other traders, but be sure to follow your own judgments for Forex trading. Listen to other?s opinions, but it is your decision to make since it is your investment.
Don?t assume that all the forex market tips you read online are absolute truths. An approach that gets great results for one person may prove a disaster for you. It is essential that you have a good grasp of the market fundamentals and base your trading decisions on your own reading of market signals.
TIP! One piece of advice offered by professionals in the foreign exchange trade is to maintain a detailed journal of your activities. Fill the journal with your successes and failures.
Choose a single currency pair and spend time studying it. If you attempt to learn about the entire system of foreign exchange including all currency pairings, you won?t actually get to trading for a long time. Select one currency pair to learn about and examine it?s volatility and forecasting. Always make sure it remains simple.
Using stop losses is essential for your forex trading. Stop loss orders can be treated as insurance on your trades. You may lose a ton of money if you fail at a move, this is where you should use stop loss orders. Keeping your capital protected is important, and placing a stop loss setup will accomplish that.
Before buying, be sure your Forex software can be customized. You will need to alter the software so that it follows your trading strategy. Prior to making your software purchase, verify that is is customizable to your specifications.
TIP! The relative strength index can tell you what the average loss or gain is on a particular market. Remember that the relative strength index does not analyze individual investments, only averages.
Developing the right knowledge for trading takes time. If you don?t exercise patience, you risk losing the equity in your account within just a few hours.
Always carry a notebook. No matter where you?re at, you can use the notebook to write down intriguing and thoughtful information you discover about the markets. These notes can also be used for tracking your progress. You can also review older tips to check their continued applicability.
Enjoy your Forex profits as you get them. If you?ve made some profitable trades, consider sending your broker a withdrawal order so you can cash out some profits. Make the most of your money that you make using Forex.
Do not waste money on Forex robots or Forex eBooks promising to make you rich. The majority of these types of products are full of unproven, and in some cases, untested trading methods. The only way these programs make money is through the sale of the plan to unsuspecting traders. You will get the most bang for your buck by purchasing lessons from professional Forex traders.
TIP! Make sure your broker is acceptable for you and your needs if you are opting for the managed Forex account. Try to choose a broker known for good business results and who has been in business for at least five years.
You should never move a stop point. Set a stop point and never change it, no matter what happens. A stop point should not be moved for any reason. You can lose a lot by doing this.
Most black box systems are not legitimate. Yes, many black box systems claim to give stellar results, but they keep their methods and the details of their statistics secret, which is a bad sign.
Choose a package for your account that is based on how much you know and what your expectations are. Understand that you have limitations, especially when you are still learning. It takes time to get used to trading and to become good at it. When dealing with what kind of account is the best to hold in Forex you should start with one that has a low leverage. Since it has minimal to zero risk attached, a small demo or practice account is recommended for beginning traders. Begin slowly and gradually and learn all the nuances of trading.
TIP! Avoid developing a ?default? position, and tailor each opening to the current conditions. Opening with the same size position leads some forex traders to be under- or over committed with their money.
Are you interested in diving into the foreign exchange markets? Before you start doing anything in foreign exchange, make sure you understand the basic fundamentals of how currency exchange markets function. Understand how currency markets move and what their causes are. Study up on the wide variety of foreign currencies that traders exchange in the market. When you have information on the currencies you can make better choices when it comes to trading.
Always learn as much as you can about the currencies you trade, and read any financial reports or news that you can get your hands on. The key here is the fact that currencies will change greatly, and it is important to keep an eye on current events. Be aware of current happenings through RSS feeds or email alerts.
This handpicked selection of tips and tricks is from successful traders who have experience with forex trading. This doesn?t mean that you?ll necessarily be as successful, but being aware of the best tactics for success will improve your odds. Try to apply the tips here, and you might make some profits when trading forex!
Never invest your money in a Forex account unless you have used the demo account for practice. Work with a demo account for two months to make sure you know everything! Statistics reveal that a mere 10 percent of virgin Forex traders actually show a profit in an open market. Entering Forex trading without adequate knowledge will lead to quick, and perhaps expensive, failure.
TIP! Make a strategy and plan before involving yourself in forex that takes into account how long you plan to stay in the trading market. If you desire to do it for years, list out the things that your hear on a daily basis.

We all know that buying and selling property can often be a stressful, time consuming and sometimes difficult process.? For this reason, many buyers in the market have decided it is time to find a ?Forever Home? rather than a ?Next Home? ? so that they can settle down, knowing that several years down the track they won?t need to consider moving.? If you are in the market for a ?Forever Home?, you may find that it beckons more from your budget, however in today?s competitive environment this is a price many buyers are willing to pay.
Would you pay a premium for your ?Forever Home??
Results at recent auctions in two of Melbourne?s best suburbs, Armadale and Malvern, suggest that buyers are prepared to pay a premium price to secure their ?Forever Home?.? Obviously value can mean different things to different prospective buyers, depending on what they want and need.
There are various extra special features that buyers look for in a forever home, and many buyers are willing to pay a premium for these.? Generally, buyers who want to avoid several moves as their needs change with different life phases are particularly attracted to the following:
?
What savings can be made when buying a ?Forever Home??
There are various ways in which purchasing a ?Forever Home? can result in a saving, for example:
With these factors in mind, it is clear that moving once to cater for your long term needs can be a wise decision.
?
A few real-life ?Forever Homes?
Over the past few weeks we have come across several great examples of individuals finding their ?forever home? at a competitive auction.
?
Single Level Townhouse in Armadale
A single level town residence on Huntingtower Road, Armadale sold for $2.35 million, way over its reserve.? Competitive bidding from five bidders drove the result and we believe it was due to four sought after factors:
?
Townhouse with a lift in Malvern
The following weekend a lovely home at on Somers Avenue, Malvern sold for $2.445 million, well in excess of the $1.96 million reserve. ?This auction attracted a large crowd and rapid bidding from seven parties.? Four private bidders out-bid myself and two other professional advocates.? None of these bidders were at all concerned about the large and busy construction site opposite on the ex-Deakin Stonnington site.? So what drove this frenzy?? It had the package (ideal lock and leave, great amenity and transport near-by and it had a lift!)
?
Single Level Townhouse in Templestowe/Doncaster
In another part of Melbourne, we are experiencing similar pent up demand for single level homes.? At one auction the successful buyer had apparently been shopping for six years for a home without any internal stairs on a compact allotment.? Most developers are building two-storey properties at the? moment and so, those wanting a long term home to cater for future mobility challenges as they age, will not buy them.
?
So before you rush off to buy your ?Next Home,? it might be time to think about buying your ?Forever Home.?

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Kenyan troops launched a pre-dawn attack on the Somali port city of Kismayu on Friday in an assault to drive the al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militants from their last major stronghold.
Residents said they could still hear shelling coming from the beach just outside Kismayu but that no Kenyan forces could be seen in the city centre where some imams called on their followers to join al Shabaab on the frontlines.
The loss of the southern port would deal a huge blow to al Shabaab as it is a lucrative source of revenue and a centre for operations over areas it has controlled in south-central Somalia since 2007.
The group, which formally merged with al Qaeda in February, has been steadily losing its footholds under sustained pressure from African peacekeeping forces (AMISOM) and Somali government troops for the past year.
While Kismayu's recapture would go a long way towards stabilizing Somalia, which has been largely lawless for the past 20 years, it may embolden the militants to retreat to the hinterlands and resort to more guerrilla-style attacks.
Kenyan military spokesman Col. Cyrus Oguna said Kenyan soldiers and Somali government troops had advanced on Kismayu from the north, south and from the sea.
"We're moving towards the main city. Our surveillance aircraft are monitoring every event taking place on the ground," Oguna told Reuters.
Residents reported fighting near the beach earlier on Friday, about 4 km (2.5 miles) outside the city, as military helicopters hovered overhead.
Locals said businesses were closed and many streets were deserted. Some masked men looked on from windows and balconies.
"We can hear deafening shells and the town looks dead. We don't know where to go, the jets are now flying over," said Rukia Jelle, who was watching the scene outside her home with her five children.
Al Shabaab, which counts foreign al Qaeda-trained fighters among its ranks, is seen as one of the biggest threats to stability in the east and Horn of Africa. It has received advice from al Qaeda's leadership, counter-terrorism experts say.
The group flourished in south-central Somalia in the wake of an unpopular Ethiopian incursion in late 2006 to rout another Islamist administration, installing order and endearing itself to large pockets of the population.
But their draconian measures, including amputations and beheadings, as well as the decision to block international aid during the famine last summer, cost them support.
Western nations have for years poured money into stabilizing Somalia, unnerved by a rising tide of Islamic militancy.
Those efforts seem to have paid dividends in the past year.
An internationally-funded peacekeeping force has driven the militants out of key urban strongholds, an EU naval force is clamping down on piracy, and a new president was elected in a largely corrupt-free process earlier this month.
There have also been targeted drone strikes against senior militant commanders. Kenya deployed troops inside Somalia last October, blaming the militants for attacks on Kenyan soil.
KISMAYU "NOT A PIECE OF CAKE"
The Kenyan military spokesman predicted an easy takeover.
"For now, we're not everywhere. We've taken a large part of it without resistance," he said.
Al Shabaab, however, said it would not surrender Kismayu.
"Going into Kismayu is not a piece of cake. For us, this is just the beginning, our troops are spread everywhere," Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab's spokesman for military operations, told Reuters on Friday.
Abdirashid Hashi, an analyst with the International Crisis Group said the loss of Kisamyu would be a "huge psychological blow" and a "significant loss" for the militants.
"The die-hard members will continue with their destabilization strategy of targeted killings, suicide bombings and IEDs (roadside bombs)," Hashi told Reuters.
"The low-level footsoldiers will just see them as a losing proposition," he said.
Hashi also said the loss of funding from local taxes would hurt them less as the group morphed into a more fluid guerrilla force.
Al Shabaab's radio station, Radio Andalus, was still airing live in Kismayu, urging residents to take their guns and join the 'jihad', Ismail Suglow, a Kismayu resident, said.
Yunis Osman, who attended Friday prayers at Kismayu's Dabaqeyn mosque, said the preacher urged people to join al Shabaab.
"The imam said mujahideen and civilians should go to the frontlines near the beach to fight. Many nodded their heads in affirmation," he said.
A woman named Halima said some residents who support the militants had already joined them with guns at the frontline.
Hashi said the fighters, who have been in Kismayu for the last five years, would have prepared for an assault they knew was coming after African troops seized Mogadishu, Afmadow, Baidoa, Beledweyne, and Marka.
"I am sure they have some contingency plans and have sent supplies outside the city," he said.
The fallout from Kismayu's eventual capture is far from clear. The city is home to rival clans who will be jockeying for power, especially over control of the port due to lucrative tax revenues.
The U.N. refugee agency said there had been a spike in residents fleeing the city on Thursday. More than 13,000 people have fled Kismayu since the beginning of September after Kenyan forces began targeting al Shabaab's positions in the city.

If you have an urge to always know what your close friends and family members are up to, then Foursquare has the remedy. The popular social network has announced the availability of its new "Always On" option which allows you to receive continuous check-ins from a selected list of people -- even if you have notifications disabled. This slick new feature gives you the flexibility to create a list of VIPs that you'd like to keep tabs on opposed to receiving a play by play of everyone else's weekend excursion. For now, the toggle can only be found on Foursquare's website, but we wouldn't be surprised if this toggle headed to the company's cadre of apps in the near future. The Android app specifically just received a new update that brings back the nearby friends check-in filter users lost in the upgrade to 5.0 (iOS and BlackBerry saw it return in August) plus a "social history" that shows if your friends have visited a location and how many times, as well as a redesigned me card.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? With more than half of all adults allergic to poison ivy, oak and sumac, scientists are reporting an advance toward an inexpensive spray that could reveal the presence of the rash-causing toxic oil on the skin, clothing, garden tools, and even the family cat or dog. Using the spray, described in ACS' The Journal of Organic Chemistry would enable people to wash off the oil, or avoid further contact, in time to sidestep days of misery.
Rebecca Braslau and colleagues explain that allergic reactions to oils of the toxic trio are more than a nusiance. They claim a huge human and economic toll, accounting for thousands of medical visits, days lost from work and school and sheer misery for the victims. It takes only 0.04th of a drop of the plants' oil to trigger a reaction, and the oil is invisible. The scientists thus sought to begin developing a way to make the oil visible, so that people can do a reality check after venturing into outdoor areas where the toxic plants grow.
They describe development of a spray that, when applied to leaves of poison ivy, oak and sumac, reacts with urushiol, the toxic oil produced by those plants. When exposed to an ordinary fluorescent light, the spray glows if urushiol is present, revealing the location of the oil. "This constitutes the groundwork for the future development of a spray to detect urushiol to avoid contact dermatitis," the scientists say.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NFL put its stamp of approval on the still-smoldering outcome of the Green Bay-Seattle game:
Wrong call.
Right review.
Wrong team still wins.
Seahawks 14, Packers 12.
With frustration mounting among coaches, players and fans, the worst fear finally materialized: a mistake by a replacement official would decide the outcome of a game.
It came while the NFL and its regular officials, locked out since June, were in resumed talks in an attempt to resolve the impasse.
That was still a day late for the Packers.
The fiasco, which unfolded on the prominent stage of "Monday Night Football," was deconstructed by the league Tuesday in a way that surely rendered little comfort for Cheeseheads.
The NFL said Seattle's last-second touchdown pass should not have counted because Seahawks receiver Golden Tate should have been called for offensive pass interference, ending the game with Green Bay winning.
Instead, officials ruled it a touchdown, and penalties either way are not reviewable.
That left it to whether Tate and Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings both had possession of the ball. The officials said they did, but the Packers insisted Jennings had clear possession for a game-ending interception. The NFL agreed that the replay was inconclusive, upholding the touchdown and giving Seattle the victory.
Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, normally a soft-spoken player who didn't say much after the loss, lashed out on his radio show Tuesday..
"First of all, I've got to do something that the NFL is not going to do: I have to apologize to the fans," he said on ESPN 540-AM in Milwaukee.
Even President Barack Obama got in on the conversation Tuesday, tweeting: "NFL fans on both sides of the aisle hope the refs' lockout is settled soon."
The controversy began on the final play when Russell Wilson heaved a 24-yard pass into a scrum in the end zone with Seattle trailing 12-7. Tate shoved away a defender with both hands, and he and Jennings got their hands on the ball.
"It was pinned to my chest the whole time," Jennings said.
Instead, the officials ruled on the field that the two had simultaneous possession, which counts as a reception.
"The NFL Officiating Department reviewed the video today and supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review," the league said in a statement.
Saying there was no indisputable evidence, though, is not the same as confirming the initial call was correct.
The Packers, one of sports' most storied franchises and Super Bowl champs two years ago, fell to 1-2. The Seahawks are 2-1.
Fans' fascination with the finish was evident in the number who stayed with ESPN to watch the highlights on "SportsCenter" after the game: 6.5 million viewers, the most for the full-length show since records started being kept in 1990.
On his weekly appearance on Seattle radio station 710 KIRO-AM, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made no apologies Tuesday, saying, "The league backed it up and game over. We win."
"Golden makes an extraordinary effort. It's a great protection. It's a great throw. It's a great attempt at the ball and he wins the battle," he said. "They were right on the point looking right at it, standing right over the thing and they reviewed it. Whether they missed the push or not ? obviously they missed the push in the battle for the ball ? but that stuff goes on all the time."
But Rodgers, in a reference to referee Wayne Elliott not seeing indisputable evidence, said: "I mean, come on, Wayne. That's embarrassing."
NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith posted a statement to members saying the lockout "jeopardizes your health and safety."
"This decision to remove more than 1,500 years of collective experience has simply made the workplace less safe," he wrote, adding, "We are actively reviewing any and all possible actions to protect you."
The NFL locked out the officials in June after their contract expired. Unable to reach a new collective bargaining agreement, the league opened the season with replacements, most with experience only in lower levels of college football.
Coaches and players began griping about the officials in the preseason, but the tension seemed to boil over this past weekend.
Scuffles after the whistle were frequent with players appearing to test the limits of the new officials, and coaches were fined for berating them.
Las Vegas oddsmakers said $300 million or more changed hands worldwide on Monday's call. The Glantz-Culver line for the game opened favoring the Packers by 4?. Had the play been ruled an interception, Green Bay would have won by 5.
The call also found its way into Wisconsin politics, with Republican Gov. Scott Walker tweeting for the regular officials to return. Opponents noted that he seemed to be supporting the referees union after going after public employee unions last year, though Democratic state Sen. Jon Erpenbach added: "We're all fans, first and foremost."
Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy was stoic after the game, but Packers guard T.J. Lang vented on Twitter, using some expletives to say Green Bay was robbed by the refs. A day later, he said he regretted only his use of profanity.
"It was just heartbreaking to have a game taken from us like that," he told 97-FM The Ticket in Detroit. "We put way too much effort, and blood, sweat and tears into these games to have one absolutely stolen from us."

According to a new study co-authored by Simon Fraser University economics professor Steeve Mongrain, parole board decisions can have a huge impact on whether or not prisoners are motivated to rehabilitate.
The Journal of Law, Economics and Organization, has just published their study Rehabilitated or Not: An Informational Theory of Parole Decisions online.
Mongrain and his colleagues argue that parole boards need to consider the length of prisoners' original sentences, as well as their behaviour in prison, in granting early parole and determining eligibility for parole review.
"Our research shows that inmates with short sentences aren't motivated to rehabilitate by enrolling in addiction recovery and skills-building programs if they're in line for early parole," says Mongrain. "But that's not surprising. What is really revealing is our finding that inmates with long sentences are also not motivated to rehabilitate if their parole eligibility is a long way off."
Mongrain says an important application of this finding is in the context of legislative changes to constraints in the justice system. Any changes to laws governing parole eligibility need to be evaluated in terms of their impact on prisoners' motivation to seek rehabilitation and ultimately the rate of recidivism in prison and society.
"Most people in prison are there precisely because of their lack of impulse control. So very long sentences combined with long waits for parole eligibility can cause impatient inmates to conclude that rehabilitation is not worthwhile," explains Mongrain. "Studies show recidivism is directly tied to prisoners' completion of addiction recovery and skills-building programs. If they're not motivated to take them then recidivism goes up.
"Contrary to punishment, which is the big stick in our justice system, parole is the carrot we offer to prisoners as an incentive to rehabilitate. If we make the carrot smaller by telling prisoners with long sentences that we're lengthening the time of their parole eligibility, then we destroy their incentive to reform."

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? President Barack Obama told world leaders Tuesday that attacks on U.S. citizens in Libya "were attacks on America," and he called on them to join in confronting the root causes of the rage across the Muslim world.
"I do believe that it is the obligation of all leaders, in all countries, to speak out forcefully against violence and extremism," Obama said in a speech to the annual gathering of the United Nations General Assembly.
Obama also condemned the anti-Muslim video that helped spark the recent attacks, calling it "cruel and disgusting." But he strongly defended the U.S. Constitution's protection of the freedom of expression, "even views that we profoundly disagree with."
With U.S. campaign politics shadowing every word, Obama also warned that time to peacefully curb the Iranian nuclear crisis is running out.
He said there is "still time and space" to resolve the issue through diplomacy. But that time is not unlimited."
"Make no mistake: A nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained. It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations and the unraveling of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty," he said.
The foreign minister of Indonesia, the nation with world's largest Muslim population, said Obama's speech was a "clarion call" for all nations to shun intolerance and he expected Muslim nations to react positively. .
"There will be a lot of sympathy. It is an issue that galvanizes all of us," Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa told The Associated Press. But he added that freedom of expression should be exercised with consideration to morality and public order.
Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has accused Obama of not being tough enough on Iran and of turning his back on Israel and other allies in the Middle East. Romney also has said he doesn't have much faith in peace prospects between Israelis and Palestinians.
Obama told the U.N.: "Among Israelis and Palestinians, the future must not belong to those who turn their backs on the prospect of peace."
Romney in separate remarks to a global conference sponsored by former President Bill Clinton, said the attack at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that took the life of the U.S. ambassador and three other U.S. citizens was an act of terrorism.
Obama mentioned the slain U.S. ambassador, Christopher Stevens, several times in his address.
"Today, we must declare that our future will be determined by people like Chris Stevens and not by his killers. Today, we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United nations," he said.
Unlike Romney, Obama has not specifically called the attacks in Libya and other U.S. missions terrorism.
Obama said that "at a time when anyone with a cellphone can spread offensive views around the world with the click of a button," the notion that governments can control the flow of information is obsolete.
"There is no speech that justifies mindless violence," such as the attack that left the four Americans dead in Libya, Obama said.
"The strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression, it is more speech ? the voices of tolerance that rally against bigotry and blasphemy and lift up the values of understanding and mutual respect."
Obama said that the United States "will be relentless in tracking down the killers and bringing them to justice." And he said he appreciated "that in recent days, the leaders of other countries in the region ? including Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen ? have taken steps to secure our diplomatic facilities and called for calm. So have religious authorities around the globe."
The president said there was no way the United States would have just banned the offensive video that helped trigger the attacks, as some leaders in the Muslim world have advocated.
"Like me, the majority of Americans are Christian, and yet we do not ban blasphemy against our most sacred beliefs," Obama said.
"Moreover, as president of our country and commander in chief of our military, I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day, and I will always defend their right to do so," he said, drawing laughter from his audience.
Running through Obama's speech was an overall theme that leaders of the Muslim world should also stand up for freer speech and oppose those who vent their anger with violence.
"There are no words that excuse the killing of innocents. There is no video that justifies an attack on an embassy. There is no slander that provides an excuse for people to burn a restaurant in Lebanon or destroy a school in Tunis or cause death and destruction in Pakistan," Obama said.
"More broadly, the events of the last two weeks speak to the need for all of us to address honestly the tensions between the West and an Arab world moving to democracy," he said.
But, he added, "Just as we cannot solve every problem in the world, the United States has not, and will not, seek to dictate the outcome of democratic transitions abroad, and we do not expect other nations to agree with us on every issue."
"Nor do we assume that the violence of the past weeks, or the hateful speech by some individuals, represents the views of the overwhelming majority of Muslims ? any more than the views of the people who produced this video represent those of Americans."
Turning to the rising violence in Syria, Obama told the U.N. delegates, "The future must not belong to a dictator who massacres his people. If there is a cause that cries out for protest in the world today, it is a regime that tortures children and shoots rockets at apartment buildings. We must remain engaged to assure that what began with citizens demanding their rights does not end in a cycle of sectarian violence."
"Together, we must stand with those Syrians who believe in a different vision ? a Syria that is united and inclusive, where children don't need to fear their own government and all Syrians have a say in how they are governed? Sunnis and Alawites, Kurds and Christians."
Obama also noted some hopeful developments in the world in the nearly four years he's been in office.
"The war in Iraq is over, and our troops have come home. We have begun a transition in Afghanistan, and America and our allies will end our war on schedule in 2014," he said. "Al-Qaida has been weakened, and Osama bin Laden is no more. Nations have come together to lock down nuclear materials, and America and Russia are reducing our arsenals."
Summing up, Obama said, "true democracy ? real freedom ? is hard work."
Declaring it is time to leave "the call of violence and the politics of division behind," Obama said: "We cannot afford to get it wrong. We must seize this moment. And America stands ready to work with all who are willing to embrace a better future."

The infection is another threat to?bees?that are needed to pollinate crops.
By Associated Press / September 24, 2012
EnlargeThe infection is as grim as it sounds: "Zombie?bees" have a parasite that causes them to fly at night and lurch around erratically until they die.

And experts say the condition has crept into Washington state.
"I joke with my kids that the zombie apocalypse is starting at my house," said Mark Hohn, a novice beekeeper who spotted the infected insects at his suburban Seattle home.
Hohn returned from vacation a few weeks ago to find many of his?bees?either dead or flying in jerky patterns and then flopping on the floor.
He remembered hearing about zombie?bees, so he collected several of the corpses and popped them into a plastic bag. About a week later, the Kent man had evidence his?bees?were infected: the pupae of parasitic flies.
"Curiosity got the better of me," Hohn said.
The zombie?bees?were the first to be confirmed in Washington state, The Seattle Times reported.
San Francisco State University biologist John Hafernik first discovered zombie?bees?in California in 2008.
Hafernik now uses a website to recruit citizen scientists like Hohn to track the infection across the country. Observers also have found zombie?bees?in Oregon and South Dakota.
The infection is another threat to?bees?that are needed to pollinate crops. Hives have been failing in recent years due to a mysterious ailment called colony collapse disorder, in which all the adult honey?bees?in a colony suddenly die.
The life cycle of the fly that infects zombie?bees?is reminiscent of the movie "Alien," the newspaper reported. A small adult female lands on the back of a honeybee and injects eggs into the?bee's?abdomen. The eggs hatch into maggots.
"They basically eat the insides out of the?bee," Hafernik said.
After consuming their host, the maggots pupate, forming a hard outer shell that looks like a fat, brown grain of rice. That's what Hohn found in the plastic bag with the dead?bees. Adult flies emerge in three to four weeks.
There's no evidence yet that the parasitic fly is a major player in the?bees' decline, but it does seem the pest is targeting new hosts, said Steve Sheppard, chairman of the entomology department at Washington State University.
"It may occur a lot more widely than we think," he said.
That's what Hafernik hopes to find out with his website, zombeewatch.org. The site offers simple instructions for collecting suspect?bees, watching for signs of parasites and reporting the results.
Once more people start looking, the number of sightings will probably climb, Hohn said.
