BUENOS AIRES ? The 36th Sao Paulo International Film Festival, which kicks off on Friday, will open with a gala screening of No, directed by Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larrain and starring Gael Garcia Bernal.

Running from Oct. 19 to Nov. 1, the Mostra will screen almost 350 films in 28 venues, including 60 Brazilian films and other 30 recent Latin American productions. The program is divided into five sections: New Filmmakers Competition (for first and second time filmmakers), International Perspective, Retrospectives (Andrei Tarkovski, Minoru Shibuya and Sergei Loznitsa), Special Presentations and Mostra Brazil, which screens local films unreleased in Sao Paulo.

The complete retrospective of eminent Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovski?s work will also include films inspired by him (by directors such as Chris Marker and Aleksandr Sokurov) as well as an art exhibit at the Sau Paulo Art Museum called Instant Light: Polaroids by Andrei Tarkovski, a series of 80 famous Polaroid pictures taken by the filmmaker and curated by the director?s son Andrei A. Tarkovski, a festival guest. The fest?s tribute also includes a photo book called Tarkovski ? Instants published by Cosac Naify, to be presented on Oct. 20 at the Sao Paulo Image and Sound Museum.

Other tributes include the late Chris Marker and Raul Ruiz as well as a two-film program curated by editor Michel Ciment in honor to the 60th anniversary of French film magazine Positif.

The Special Presentation section will feature an outdoor screening of F.W. Murnau?s Nosferatuat Ibirapuera Park with a live orchestra conducted by Germanmaestro Pierre Oser, who also wrote the score. Other outdoor screenings include David Lean?s Lawrence of Arabia, Steven Spielberg?s Jaws and Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger?s The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.

The Mostra will also premiere Invisible World, a compilation of short films developing the notion of invisibility, and directed by Leon Cakoff and Renata de Almerida. The film is made of audiovisual poems by renowned directors such as Manoel de Oliveira, Atom Egoyan, Wim Wenders, Theo Angelopoulos, Maria de Medeiros and Guy Maddin, among others.
