2012 NFL Free Agents: San Francisco 49ers Must Sign Randy Moss for QB Alex Smith

Arguably the most explosive WR talent to grace the game, retired NFL star Randy Moss is back in action and looking to make a return. QB Alex Smith has to be hoping Moss lands with the 49ers.

According to the San Francisco Gate's Niner Insider Blog, Moss will be working out with the San Francisco 49ers after the team has shown interest in signing the free agent. Just last week, Moss reportedly worked out with the New Orleans Saints as well.

"Citing a league source, ESPN reported the six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver will fly to the Bay Area today and work out for the 49ers on Monday. The session will mark Moss? second workout for a team in less than a week."

During the team's run last season, Smith proved he was the starter for this team, throwing for a career-best 3,144 yards and a career-low five interceptions to go along with his 17 touchdowns.

The production helped lead the 49ers to an NFC Championship Game against the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

In a game against the New Orleans Saints to open up the playoffs for the team, Smith and TE Vernon Davis helped lead a game-winning drive to seal a spot in the conference championship.

Yet, it is Smith that has been limited in his options downfield, as adding a guy like Moss would give the 49ers a solid option down the sidelines.

Davis was the main option for this team, as he was able to put up 792 yards and six touchdowns in the 2011-2012 season. Yet as a TE, he was unable to provide Smith enough of a deep threat to really open up the field. Much of this depended on the run game of RB Frank Gore.

Despite making the comeback at 35 years of age, there is no question that Moss still has what it takes to succeed as a solid WR option in a system that the 49ers have.

Signing a guy like Moss who can spread the field out vertically will only help the 49ers, a team in desperate need of an offensive boost.
