Simple Solutions To Help You Save Energy In Your Home | Feng ...

March 30, 2012 by homeimprovementguru?

See the Venapro Ingredients One thing about Energy Tips that is pretty incredible is how far-reaching it has proven itself to be among the population. Indeed, it is just not all that hard to see it at work in your life or the lives of people you know, possibly. When you begin reading more, you will understand all that is involved and it could surprise you. Given that, people have seen more than enough so they do have a handle on it even if they do not understand all of it. Not only that, but it is completely natural and normal to want to find what you are looking for. We hope to expand your knowledge base of Energy Tips, and in so doing make it possible for you to be much more knowledgeable.

People around the world are really concerned about our shrinking energy supplies. Being thoughtful citizens of the world, we must do our best to conserve electricity. We depend on electricity to the degree that most of us only fret about it when we don?t have it for one reason or another. Naturally, the person who regularly writes the check to the utility company is worried about the cost of electricity and would be happy to discover some ways to reduce it.

An energy examination might be a very effective way to find out exactly how your energy is being wasted. This will make it easier to know the best way to cut energy costs and give you the chance to set up a specific plan for saving energy. Several things will be very apparent, such as turning off the coffee maker instead of leaving it on all the time. You will be able to comfortably lower your electricity usage by about 10% by lowering your thermostat ten degrees for a minimum of eight hours each day. Your home could be insulated in the winter by simply pulling the drapes shut. Investigate your home meticulously so you can see if cold air is making its way in through poorly insulated areas. You can lower your energy usage considerably just by having the proper level of insulation in your attic.

See more about where to Buy Venapro As we have just mentioned, Energy Tips is something that cannot be dismissed ? or at least should never be ignored. We do understand very well that your situation is vital and matters a great deal. There is a lot, we know, and that is why we are taking a very short break to say a few words about this. This is significant information that can help you, and there is no doubting that. Our last few items can really prove to be powerful considering the overall.

A great advantage can be acquired when you plant trees, which can also improve your home?s appearance. Trees properly placed will be able to insulate your home during cold weather and help keep it well ventilated during the summer. Putting a green covering around your home may also be advantageous according to some researchers. A check for leaks should be completed on your electrical wiring system as well as other components such as outlets, fuses, and appliances. Help save a lot of electricity by replacing your regular lights with fluorescent bulbs. They not only possess a longer life but they use 75% less energy, leading to a lot of savings. If you really need to save on electricity, do away with your old appliances and use energy-efficient ones instead; some of the newer refrigerators actually don?t even use as much electricity as a light bulb.

You could certainly keep a lot more money in your pocket if you consistently turn off and unplug your appliances that run on electricity each time you depart from your home. Make sure to turn down your thermostat as well as the settings on your hot water heater and refrigerator in the event you leave for more than a few days. If you do these along with having a water-saving shower head, you?ll be able to lower your bill considerably, just for the cost of heating water. It?s also possible to weatherize your house by performing simple things such as installing energy-saving windows and regularly cleaning filters.

You now can realize that by just taking a few easy, no-cost steps, you can obtain large savings on your electric bills. Other techniques could have a small expense but you can anticipate buying newer energy-efficient appliances with the savings you get from spending a little bit to cut electricity costs.

See more about Tweet Attacks Review The great thing about what we have covered is the ease of implementation. But it is important with Energy Tips that you only choose what is most suitable for your needs. There is all sorts of good and not so good information on the net. Although we do feel most content writers have totally sincere goals when they write.

There is much more available as you will discover in just a minute.

<P>While much of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>'s <a href="/news/articles/1681772/justin-bieber-boyfriend-mike-posner.jhtml">"Boyfriend"</a> video remains top-secret, MTV News scored a visit to the set Thursday night, and the teen superstar offered up some insight into what Beliebers will see when the clip drops. </P><P> </P><P>"The concept of this video, I mean it's not like a steady concept," he explained on the Cali-based set in between shots. "It's not like 'Justin follows this girl to this spot.' No, it's a bunch of amazing scenes: Like a fire scene, we have an ice scene." </P><P> </P><P><div style="background-color:#000000;width:428px;"><div style="padding:4px;"><iframe src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:754722/cp~vid%3D754722%26instance%3Dmtv%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A754722" width="420" height="236" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></div> </P><P> </P><P>He continued that the video will also include some of his very fine dancing skills. "It's kind of like bouncing back and forth," he said. "And then there's scenes of me and just a bunch of girl dancers, and just some great shots, great artistic shots, great shots of me smiling. It's fun." </P><P> </P><P>Bieber and Tilley have worked together several times in the past, including on the <a href="/news/articles/1669447/justin-bieber-u-smile-vma-best-male-video.jhtml">VMA-nominated "U Smile,"</a> as well as "Never Let You Go," "Fa La La" (with Boyz II Men) and Chris Brown's very cinematic "Next 2 U," which features Bieber. </P><P> </P><P>"The video's really good. Masco Stays Neutral - Zacks.com

We have maintained a Neutral rating on Masco Corporation (MAS) following appraisal of fourth quarter and fiscal year 2011 results.

The company reported a broader loss of 9 cents per share in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared with a loss of 8 cents per share in the fourth quarter of 2010 (excluding special items) and the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 3 cents. Marginal top-line growth and reduced gross margins led to escalating loss. Sales in the quarter were flat at $1.7 billion compared with the fourth quarter of 2010 due to low cabinet, plumbing and windows and door sales.? Gross margins were 21.9% compared with 23.5% in the year-ago quarter. (Please read our full report at Masco Reports Broader Loss).

Masco Corporation manufactures, sells, and installs home improvement and building products. Its mains products and services include plumbing products, cabinets and related products, installation and other services, decorative architectural products, and other specialty products. The company owns some of the popular brands like KraftMaid and Merillat cabinets, Delta and Hansgrohe faucets, Behr paint and Milgard windows. Moreover, the company is also experimenting on new products. We believe that the company?s leadership brands, its continued focus on innovation and new product launches can help drive growth in the long term.

However, falling prices have made homes a less lucrative investment for buyers, reducing demand for Masco?s products. Masco?s business largely depends on the home improvement and new home construction market which is currently experiencing a slowdown. The downturn in the housing industry led to lower demand for new homes and an oversupply of homes in the market, thus generating a downward pressure on home prices. This combined with low consumer confidence, high unemployment rates and reduced credit availability lowered discretionary consumer spending for home improvements and new home construction, thus hurting the company?s earnings and sales. Further, new homes are facing tough competition from housing alternatives, including resale homes, foreclosed homes, short sale homes and rental housing. Besides, the Euro-zone crisis has capped overall economic activity with spill-over effects felt in the US too, limiting top-line growth at Masco. Other than that rising prices of raw materials are impacting the company?s margins.

In 2011, the company completed the restructuring and rationalizing of its businesses and managing its cost structure in order to cope with challenging industry conditions. The company?s initiatives include business consolidations, system implementations, plant closures, improvement in the global supply chain and headcount reductions. The main rationale behind this move is efficient cost management. The restructuring initiatives are expected to result in about $150 million of gross cost reduction before inflation in 2012.

Management however believes that its cost cutting initiatives and top-line growth efforts, though failing to fetch the desired results in 2011, will drive significant improvement in 2012, even if the housing market continues to remain weak. Management believes the segments that were most hurt by restructuring, namely Installation and North American Cabinet Operations, would begin to show signs of growth in 2012. Sharing management?s optimism we prefer to wait and see how the year 2012 unfolds for homebuilders.

&#39;True Story&#39; Movie -- New Regency To Finance Film About Disgraced ...

Mike Fleming

James Franco True StoryJonah Hill True StoryEXCLUSIVE: New Regency has made a deal to fully finance True Story. That is the Rupert Goold-directed adaptation of a memoir by Michael Finkel, a disgraced New York Times journalist who discovered that an accused murderer had stolen his identity. Once caught, the fugitive would only talk to the journalist. Jonah Hill is playing Finkel and James Franco is set to play Christian Longo, who was captured in Mexico after rising near the top of the FBI Ten Most Wanted List for allegedly killing his family. Production will begin in July and Fox will distribute.

True Story MoviePlan B?s Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Brad Pitt will produce with New Regency. It?s a fascinating and bizarre true story. Finkel was a writer at The New York Times Magazine in 2002 when he learned of Longo?s capture and that the accused killer had taken the journo?s name. The very next day, the real Finkel was fired by Times editors, right after they ran an editor?s note declaring that he had falsified parts of an investigative article. His career seemingly over, Finkel was given a shot at some redemption when Longo declared that Finkel was the only journalist he would talk to. That led to a surreal relationship with the accused murderer, who was trying to declare his innocence. Unraveling the mystery was a chance for Finkel to salvage something of his career.

The deal gives the reconstituted New Regency another star-driven project. Among other projects, the producer-financier teamed with Paramount has closed its deal with Russell Crowe to star in Darren Aronofsky?s Noah for a July 23 start and Regency also has Pitt committed to star in The Gray Man, the James Gray-directed adaptation of the Mark Greaney thriller novel that is expected to start production later this year or early next.

When History Joins The Future

In the 1920s, Telfair Stockton developed the Jacksonville neighborhood of Avondale. The area was designed by an architect from Ohio named William Pitkin. Along with its sixteen urban parks, its commercial district still exists today. This array of specialty shops, boutiques and restaurants along St. Johns Avenue is still going strong.

Because of a Florida internet marketing company named BreezeGo, people all over the world can benefit from businesses like these in Jacksonville. The employees at BreezeGo make it their mission to develop high quality products and services for companies that want to advertise their own products and services in a fresh and interesting way. BreezeGo is the internet marketing company Florida residents trust above many online marketing websites.

BreezeGo offers many different services to their customers. This Florida internet marketing company has been in business since 2006. In 2009, it merged with another reputable company in order to expand its possibilities for design. Here are just a few of the reasons it stands out as one of the top online marketing websites:

Professional website designers are waiting to help businesses give the best impression possible to potential customers. BreezeGo is the internet marketing company Florida businesses use for their web design needs. Their creativity will boost sales by keeping customers on the client?s site.

As one of the best online marketing websites, BreezeGo can also help drive traffic to the sites it designs. Its strategy includes the best techniques in the online marketplace. Search engine optimization is huge in the success of a business, and BreezeGo makes sure that its clients? sites will consistently rank high in search engines. Through Paid Search and Link Building, potential customers can easily find these sites as well. E-mail and social media marketing play a big part in BreezeGo?s strategy. The company even offers businesses a good showing on local maps.

While building a unique website and driving traffic to it are essential for good business, many companies new to internet marketing find it difficult to see exactly how they are doing with their online presence. BreezeGo helps pinpoint success with its website analytics tools. This tool not only analyzes who is actually viewing a site, but it also analyzes potential customers through activity off the site.

Those new to conducting business online can benefit from the web hosting offered by this Florida internet marketing company. Customers can register their domains through BreezeGo and enjoy the privileges of the Basic or Premium Hosting services. Multiple domains can be hosted under even the Basic Package along with unlimited storage and transfer. The Premium plan delivers even more service for the serious business owner.

For companies that already own a website, BreezeGo offers a complimentary website analysis. This includes information about where a site ranks, how well the site performs with major search engines and whether other sites are linking to it.

When Mr. Stockton brainstormed about an urban area of commerce for Jacksonville in the 1920?s, he probably never dreamed of the far-reaching effects of the internet. Thanks to companies like BreezeGo, his innovation can be multiplied to create future business growth for Jacksonville. As the internet marketing company Florida companies trust, BreezeGo can go beyond developing a neighborhood to making Jacksonville business available to internet users around the globe.

Alicia Silverstone chews son's food for him

Alicia Silverstone in 2011.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Many parents post videos of themselves feeding their young children. But actress Alicia Silverstone went one step further.?A video, posted to YouTube on March 20, shows her feeding her now?11-month-old son, Bear Blu, by chewing food and passing it directly into his mouth from hers.

The "Clueless" star also posted the video on her site, "The Kind Life,"?which is an offshoot of her bestselling vegan cookbook, "The Kind Diet."

"I just had a delicious breakfast of miso soup, collards and radish steamed and drizzled with flax oil, cast iron mochi with nori wrapped outside, and some grated daikon," Silverstone wrote.?"I fed Bear the mochi and a tiny bit of veggies from the soup ... from my mouth to his. It?s his favorite ... and mine. He literally crawls across the room to attack my mouth if I?m eating. This video was taken about a month or 2 ago when he was a bit wobbly. Now he is grabbing my mouth to get the food!"

Not everyone reacted positively to Silverstone's method of feeding her son.

"She's an adorable mother, with a cute kid? but this video is still weird as hell," said one comment on?YouTube.

But on Silverstone's site, reader Kate Kelly posted, "Alicia, I had never thought of this before but it's the cutest way of feeding your baby! I have a 7 month old and I think I will try this method ... she is always trying to lick my mouth anyways might as well give her a reward!"

Fox News asked?medical and nutritional experts what they thought of the feeding method. "It doesn't seem like a hygenic practice," one doctor told the site.

?

What do you think of Silverstone's way of feeding her son? Tell us on Facebook.?

Bone and Joint Supplements Can Preserve And Improve Health ...

By Rosalee R. Lewis

Taking joint supplements is a good idea because our joints receive more wear and tear than any other part of our body. During regular, everyday activities, our bones and joints are exposed to a multitude of different factors that could result in injury. As a result, many individuals who complain about pain are actually complaining about their joints. Our bones and joints have enormous responsibilities of keeping us erect and allowing us to perform daily tasks. Therefore, taking good care of them is something we all should do.

In order to do that, you really need to provide your bones what they need to stay healthy. That means that you need to get plenty of protein, vitamins, and nutrients like Vitamin D, calcium and magnesium. The food we eat typically offers a small quantity of these things, but the amount is far from what we need to maintain bone strength. You could go crazy looking for all of the supplements you need to support your bone health. However, you can also discover all in one supplements that offer all around bone health.

Taking care of your joints is also a vital task to undertake. Their flexibility is what we depend upon to do many everyday tasks such as writing a note, typing on the computer, opening a door, holding a coffee cup and much more. It can be easy to take joints for granted until you begin experiencing pain in them. Glucosamine and chondroitin are compounds that you will find in the superior joint supplements. These compounds are known to exist in healthy cartilage.

You still have to follow a healthy lifestyle to take care of your joints and bones, even though you can offer bone and joint supplements to further their health. You have to eat healthy foods that naturally sustain bone and joint health. You should also exercise safely by wearing the proper type of shoes and performing stretches before and after to support joint flexibility.

Injuries that do occur to your joints need to be taken care of promptly. That means you should not push your joints beyond their boundaries. But if you do encounter an injury, you will need to have a doctor assess the damage and try to circumvent using it too much for a specified period of time. You can take joint supplements to help with pain and inflammation, but when you begin using your joint again, do it slowly so you do not injure it all over again.

If this article did not answer all your queries and you are still looking for more facts about the subject please look into at Joint Supplements more beneficial data can also be found at Sports Supplements.

Ronaldo fastest to 100 league goals in Spain

By JOSEPH WILSON

updated 5:59 p.m. ET March 24, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Cristiano Ronaldo became the fastest player to reach 100 goals in the Spanish league by scoring a brace to help leader Real Madrid rebound from consecutive draws with a 5-1 rout of Real Sociedad on Saturday.

Gonzalo Higuain scored before both Ronaldo and Karim Benzema hit doubles as Madrid showed no signs of missing the guiding hand of suspended coach Jose Mourinho.

Madrid stayed six points clear at the top of table following 10-man Barcelona's 2-0 victory at Mallorca where Lionel Messi netted his 55th goal of the season in all competitions.

Messi, who broke Barcelona's all-time scoring record on Wednesday, netted from a poorly defended free kick to become the first player in a top-level European league to score 55 goals in a season since Sporting Lisbon's Mario Jardel in 2002.

Barcelona's Thiago Alcantara received his second booking in the 56th, but Gerard Pique volleyed in Messi's rebound off the post in the 79th to seal the victory.

"It was an important win that will permit us to prepare well for our Champions League game against AC Milan," said coach Pep Guardiola, whose Barcelona visits Italy on Wednesday. "I am satisfied. At the end, our will, effort and not looking for excuses allowed us to pull out the win."

Madrid great Ferenc Puskas formerly held the record for the fastest player to reach 100 goals after doing so in 105 matches in the 1960s. Ronaldo needed 92 games to score 101.

Ronaldo and Messi are tied with 35 goals each this season in the Spanish league. With nine games to go, the duo are closing in on Ronaldo's league record of 40 goals from last season.

Madrid faced the game at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium without Mourinho, defender Pepe, midfielders Mesut Oezil, all serving suspensions for losing their nerves in the ill-tempered ending to the 1-1 draw at Villarreal on Wednesday.

After its defensive strategy backfired at Villarreal, Madrid started two strikers in Higuain and Benzema along with Ronaldo and Kaka.

The high-powered attack needed only six minutes to give the hosts the lead as Higuain struck a superb volley of Benzema's pass beyond goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

Ronaldo made it 2-0 in the 32nd when he galloped onto Kaka's excellent throughball, took his time to size Bravo up, and curled a shot by the helpless keeper and inside the far post.

Madrid scored again off a long pass behind the defense when Benzema made an exquisite control of Xabi Alonso's lob with one touch and then gently lifted it over Bravo with the next in the 41st.

"Against an attacking side with Kaka, Benzema, Higuain and Ronaldo it's very important to have a good defense," Sociedad coach Philippe Montanier said. "The first goal so early was a blow but the most difficult thing was falling behind by three by halftime."

Xabi Prieto pulled one back for Sociedad a minute later with a long strike, but Madrid kept rolling, and four minutes after halftime Benzema was left completely unmarked to blast in for his double and take his league goal tally to 16.

Ronaldo then raced behind the broken Sociedad backline to tap home Higuain's cross in the 55th.

Madrid staff and players again refused to speak to the media after the match despite their brilliant performance.

No player or coach for Madrid has spoken to the press since Wednesday, when Madrid lost its composure following Villarreal's late equalizer. Mourinho, his assistant Rui Faria, and several players were sent off for making abrasive comments to the referee.

Madrid's decision has been widely criticized in the Spanish press.

Mallorca carried the initiative early at Iberostar Stadium.

But a horrible defensive lapse by the hosts let Messi score one of the easier goals of his record 235 for Barcelona. Various Mallorca defenders failed to make a play on Messi's lobbed free kick, allowing it to bounce in the area before landing in the back of the net.

The Argentina forward has scored in eight straight games with 18 goals during the streak.

Mallorca gained a numerical advantage after Thiago was shown a second yellow card for a questionable hand ball when it appeared he used his shoulder to control a ball.

"When we went down to 10 men we knew it would be tough, but we resisted well," Pique said.

Mallorca sought to capitalize on its extra manpower, but Pique put the result beyond doubt. Messi squirmed free and fired off the goal frame, and Pique shot in the rebound as Barcelona remained perfect in its last seven league matches.

Also, Valencia's grip on third place loosened after falling 3-1 at Getafe.

Telescope project starts with a bang on the Web

The birth of a giant new telescope began with a literal big bang on Friday: an excavation blast at the peak of a mountain in Chile, the observatory's future home.

The explosion detonated just before noon ET in order to level the mountaintop for the future Giant Magellan Telescope, an 82-foot (24.5-meter) observatory designed to scan the cosmos in unprecedented detail. ?The blast was broadcast live on the Internet via the U.S. Embassy in Chile, and occurred a couple of minutes earlier than planned.

"Well that's what we call a short fuse," one project official said with a laugh just after the explosion, which was timed for high noon and infused with celebratory colors. "It was in three colors. It had red, white and blue, which happen to be the colors of the countries involved in this: Chile, the U.S, Australia and Korea," the official said.

The early explosion left no time to mark the detonation with an anticipatory countdown, as previously planned.

The live webcast of the explosion ? which project officials dubbed the "Big Bang Event" ? drew an unexpectedly large crowd on the Web. Event organizers had to move the broadcast to a Ustream feed in order to handle the demand. Ustream's statistics indicated that the video stream was viewed more than 3,000 times.

The Giant Magellan Telescope is a $700 million project to build a ground-based telescope with 10 times the resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope currently orbiting Earth. In all, 10 different universities and organizations are participating in the Giant Magellan Telescope project ? named after the famed Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the world in 1522. [Gallery: Giant Magellan Telescope Envisioned]

The telescope is being built 8,500 feet (2,550 meters) above sea level, atop Las Campanas Peak in Chile's Atacama Desert, a region known for its dependably clear and dark night sky. Construction is expected to be completed by 2018.

"Today marks a historic step toward constructing an astronomical telescope larger than any in existence today," Wendy Freedman, chair of the Giant Magellan Telescope Organization and director of the Carnegie Observatories, said in a statement. "Years of testing have shown that Las Campanas is one of the premier observatory sites in the world, and the Carnegie Institution is proud to host the GMT."

More than 70 controlled blasts will be conducted over the next few months to excavate the 3 million cubic feet of rock from Las Campanas Peak to make way for the telescope, officials said. The instrument is being built at the Las Campanas Observatory, which is managed by the Carnegie Institution for Science.

The telescope consists of an adaptive optics system of six circular mirrors surrounding a seventh central mirror. Each mirror segment is 28 feet (8.4 meters) across and weighs 20 tons, Carnegie officials said. They are designed to be adjusted quickly to eliminate the blurring effects of Earth's atmosphere.

Project scientists hope the telescope will shed new light on the birth of the first galaxies and the nature of dark matter and dark energy, among other astronomical mysteries.

One of the telescope's mirror segments is nearing completion, and work on a second mirror began in January, project officials said.

?2012 is a banner year for the GMT project as we complete the design process, develop the primary mirrors, and begin work on the site in Chile," said project director Patrick McCarthy of the Giant Magellan Telescope Organization.

The Giant Magellan Telescope is just one of several huge telescopes currently under development, and it is by no means the largest instrument planned.

The world's largest telescope will be the European Extremely Large Telescope, a 138-foot (42-meter) project led by the European Southern Observatory that will also be built in the Atacama Desert. Construction of that $1.43 billion telescope is also slated to begin this year. The Atacama Desert is home to several other astronomy observatories because it typically gets 300 days of clear night skies each year.

The World of Computer Gaming Today at Peri Helion Global

Computer gaming has come a long way since it was introduced to the world a few decades ago. Back then, the computer games were quite simple and even crude at times. The graphics were not that impressive, and the sound effects hardly made an impact. However, we really enjoyed playing those games simply because they were considered cutting edge at that time. Nevertheless, playing computer games was widely perceived at that time to be just for kids. Today, that is hardly the case, as people from all walks of life now spend a lot of time playing all sorts of games on computers.

The first thing you would notice about computer games these days is the quality of the graphics. More often than not, the graphics are so realistic that you would sometimes feel like you are actually in the game. This is often the case with first-person shooter or FPS games. As you shoot, hack or stab an enemy or a monster, the blood that spurts out of their bodies seem like the real thing. The sound, meanwhile is just plain superb. To fully appreciate the sound effects of a computer game, hook your PC up to a set of excellent speakers and prepare to be blown away.

However, there is one requirement that you must fulfill in order to enjoy these games. You must have a computer that is fast and powerful enough to be able to run these games. If you already have your own gaming computer, then that would be more than enough. If your computer is of the regular variety, you need to do things to boost its capabilities. If it were up to me, I will speed up my pc by upgrading certain components of my computer. However, you can always buy a computer specifically designed for gaming if you want to.

Big Kill, Not Big Chill, Finished Off Giant Kangaroos

News | More Science

Scientists have debated whether climate change or human activity wiped out the world's megafauna. In Australia new evidence points to hunting, and only hunting

diprotodon-sketchBIG KILL: Hunters killed off more than 50 species of large animals in Australia, including Diprotodon optatum pictured here. Image: ? Science/AAAS/Drawing by Peter Murray

Around 40,000 years ago, the giant kangaroo disappeared from Australia. So did Diprotodon (rhinoceros-size wombats) and Palorchestes (tapirlike marsupials) as well as supersize birds, reptiles and some 50 other so-called megafauna?big animals. And now a record of fungal spores pulled from the swamp at Lynch's Crater in the northeastern corner of the continent reveals humans as the culprit.

"The megafauna declined soon after the time that we know people arrived in the region," explains zoologist Christopher Johnson of the University of Tasmania, lead author of the report published March 23 in Science. "We conclude that humans, not climate, caused the extinction."

The basis for the charge rests on two mud cores?one stretching from around 130,000 years ago to 24,000 years ago and the other ranging from roughly 50,000 years ago 3,000 years ago. The long core reveals how the local environment reacted to two previous periods of cooling and drying. Judging by the Sporormiella fungus?which only releases its spores when in the dung of plant-eating animals?big animals fared well during these climatic changes, munching happily on the changing vegetation of the area.

That changed roughly 41,000 years ago, when the number of spores in the core "dropped almost to zero," the researchers wrote. The record in mud also notes an increase in charcoal from large-scale fires and new types of vegetation?eucalyptus trees and the like with grasses beneath, much as seen today. A shift in climate could alter plant populations, but this vegetation change actually precedes by roughly 10,000 years the most recent climate shift within the core's age, to cooler and drier conditions. "Climate change played no role in megafaunal extinction in Australia," Johnson concludes.

Using the second core, the researchers then focused on the period between 43,000 years and 38,000 years ago to try to understand how humans eliminated the megafauna. Humans could have hunted them to extinction or set fires that changed the landscape so much that large herbivores could not survive. But examining the core in 100-year increments showed that the shifts in vegetation happened after the near disappearance of Sporormiella spores?not before as would have been expected if fire-triggered vegetation changes had caused the extinctions. "It could not have been vegetation change due to firing of the landscape, as other people have proposed, because those things followed megafaunal decline," Johnson argues.

In fact, the disappearance of the big plant-eaters seems to have set the stage for fires, allowing the buildup of the dry grasses and other fine fuels that spur burning like the catastrophic wildfires still seen in Australia today. At Lynch's Crater, the disappearance of the large plant-eaters saw an increase in grasses within 300 years, then acacias, eucalyptuses and other hard-leaved plants within 400 years, and, ultimately, a rise in the pollen from forest trees some 1,600 years later. Even today, many of the plants still extant in Australia boast features such as protective spines that would discourage grazing by megafauna or big fruit and seeds that could only be dispersed by large animals that no longer exist?a landscape shaped by ghosts. "These plants are now anachronistic," Johnson observes.

The findings seem to close the case against modern human hunters, although they remain to be confirmed at other sites throughout the continent. And, on every continent except Africa, human arrival and large animal extinctions seem to coincide, so the case may also extend globally. (The reason large animals did not vanish in Africa is perhaps because they co-evolved with us and learned to be wary of this stalking, hairless, upright ape.)

An analysis of ancient DNA from extinct species such as woolly mammoths and rhinoceroses suggests that "climate has been a major driver of population change over the past 50,000 years," according to a 2011 Nature paper that also suggests climate and humans may have colluded to push such species to extinction. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.) Johnson, for one, isn't sure climate should be blamed. "Extinctions in other parts of the world were remarkably similar in pattern and severity to those that occurred in Australia," he notes. After all, human hunting wiped out similar species from in neighboring New Zealand less than a millennia ago. "This seems to strengthen the view that human impact?mainly hunting?was the predominant cause in other places as well as in Australia."

As for the specific weapons and techniques, they remain unknown. "It is almost certain that hunting of large animals was one of the things [early Australians] did, but we'll probably never know exactly how they did it," Johnson says. In this case, it wasn't the weapons that fingered the perpetrators but an absence of fungal spores that reveals an ancient human deed.

Imagine Plans New Version of Orwell's 1984

George Orwell?s seminal literary work 1984 could be getting a new movie adaptation.

Imagine Entertainment, the production house run by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, and LBI Entertainment, the banner run by Julie Yorn, are teaming up to develop a new take on the 20th century classic.

The book is set in a dystopian society in a perpetual state of war, which in turn leads to a state of paranoia. Propaganda, surveillance, mind control and cult of personality -- concepts seen in totalitarian and fascist states such as Nazi Germany and Stalin?s Soviet Union -- were taken to new levels in the book written in 1948 and published in 1949.

The story centers on Winston Smith, who works for a government branch called the Ministry of Truth, where he alters facts and histories but secretly harbors desires of rebellion (as well as desires of a forbidden love affair). The ideas in the novel became hugely influential in the worlds of politics and art, with the author?s name eventually becoming an adjective (Orwellian).

Shepard Fairey, the street artist perhaps best known for creating the Barack Obama "Hope" poster, was instrumental in bringing the project to Imagine and LBI and might take some sort of producer role once the deals shake out.

Imagine and Fairey were pursuing Orwell's estate for the rights to 1984 and discovered that Yorn was simultaneously seeking the rights. The companies then decided to pair up. ?

The producers are out to writers to find a take on the material before setting it up at a studio.

The book has been adapted several times in TV and movies, the most recent being, natch, in 1984 in a version directed by Michael Radford and starring John Hurt, Richard Burton and Suzanna Hamilton.

Olivia Wilde to host cancer research run in NY

Nine years ago, actress Olivia Wilde ran, or rather walked, in the EIF Revlon Run/Walk. In May, she will host the event that supports women's cancer research with fellow first-time ambassador Emma Stone.

"Emma and I will kick off the event and welcome everybody, then we'll participate," Wilde said of her duties, which include pounding New York pavement with thousands of participants.

The "House" star says she may even run alongside Stone, but only for a short time.

"Maybe Emma will run in the front, and I'll bring up the rear," Wilde joked. "I probably will have such shin splints after attempting to run, I will be recovering on ice."

The event is one of the largest single-day fundraisers in the U.S. Each year, tens of thousands participate in New York and Los Angeles. The company has distributed more than $65 million to date for research projects.

Wilde says she's proud to participate because cancer has affected several women in her life, and she's eager to help find a cure. She feels the best chance comes from the private sector.

"I'm optimistic that in my lifetime we will find one. Or certainly in the same way that's happened with HIV in the last 30 years where treatment has gotten to a much better place. But that can only happen if there's money behind research, and that doesn't just happen magically," Wilde said.

Six-time host Halle Berry will lead the Los Angeles event.

Sony Mobile offers up Xperia S open source archive, provides support for custom ROM devs

Xperia S

If you're an OEM like Sony Mobile, looking to expand your reach, what can you do for Android custom ROM developers to appeal to them? Show them your source and offer them up the same tools you use, of course.

And that's exactly what Sony has done. In an announcement on its blog, the artist formerly known as Sony Ericsson has offered up access to the open source archive for the Xperia S, where folks who know what they are doing can build custom ROMs and kernels for the device.

Over the past year or so, Sony has openly courted the Android the developer community. Whether that stance will help them improve their market share is open to debate, but it's certainly something we'd love to see from more Android manufacturers.

Mountain Lion Developer Preview 2's new features detailed

Mountain Lion
When Apple dropped the second developer preview of Mountain Lion on Friday it didn't see fit to include release notes, instead leaving it to us and the rest of the blogosphere to dig up the new features ourselves. The big ones are clearly Twitter alerts in the Notification Center and the introduction of tab syncing in Safari through iCloud. The latter of which should sooth iPhone fans that were jealous of Chrome for Android. Smaller enhancements were also turned on, including warnings when a program asks to access your contacts and location-based alarms in the Reminders app -- which can be shared with your iOS-based mobile device as well. We'll keep looking for more, but let us know you discover any new features in the comments.
