GOUDOUDE DIOBE, Senegal ? ?It's 10 a.m., and the 2-year-old is still waiting for breakfast. Aliou Seyni Diallo collapses to his knees in tears and plops his forehead down on the dirt outside his family's hut.
Soon he is wailing inconsolably and writhing on his back in the sand. A neighbor spots him, picks him up easily by one arm, and gives him a little uncooked millet in a metal bowl. The toddler shovels it into his mouth with sticky fingers coated in tears and grime. The crying stops, for the moment.
Each day is now a struggle for the women of this parched village in north Senegal to keep hungry children at bay, as they search desperately for food. Aliou's mother can only recall one time in her life when it was worse ? and that was more than 20 years ago.
"I start a fire, put a pot of water on it and tell the children I am in the middle of preparing something," Maryam Sy, 37 and a mother of nine, says in a raspy voice. "In reality, I have nothing."
Here are the two most alarming things about Aliou's story: He lives in the richest country in the Sahel, and the worst is yet to come.
More than 1 million children under 5 in this wide, arid swath of Africa below the Sahara are now at risk of a food shortage so severe that it threatens their lives, UNICEF estimates. In Senegal, which is relatively stable and prosperous, malnutrition among children in the north has already surpassed 14 percent, just shy of the World Health Organization threshold for an emergency.
Hunger in this region is a lurking predator that never quite leaves, and comes back every year to pick off the weakest. Even in a non-crisis year, some 300,000 children die from lack of food across western and central Africa. All it takes is a drought and a failed harvest, and those who are now barely living on one meal a day will starve.
Since late 2011, aid groups have been sounding the alarm about how drought is once again devastating communities where children live perilously close to the edge. But not enough donations have come in.
The situation is worst in Niger, Chad and Mali, where political chaos has forced hundreds of thousands to seek refuge in places where people don't have enough to eat themselves. But in a worrisome sign, this time the crisis also threatens 20,000 children in northern Senegal ? little rag dolls with just enough energy to bury their faces in their mothers' dresses.
"If you don't get certain nutrients, your brain is damaged and you can never recover," said Martin Dawes, West Africa spokesman for the U.N. children's agency. "You are then obviously far more vulnerable to a reduction in your food bowl turning into acute and severe malnutrition."
Already the signs of damage are there.
Aliou's 3-year-old sister Fatimata and 8-year-old sister Kadja have orangish hair growing in at the roots ? a telltale sign of the protein deficiency that comes from eating just one bowl of porridge a day. The girls are neatly dressed, but their clavicles poke through their tops like hangers.
Haby, their 4-year-old sister, has streaks of orangish-blonde hair that frame her face, almost as blonde as the Cinderella cartoon character printed on her dusty T-shirt. Her mother worriedly smooths down the wisps around her braids. She does not know the culprit is lack of protein; she wonders if it's something in the water.
The U.N. World Food Programme serves lunch at school, but the Diallo sisters don't go. Their parents can't afford the school supplies.
___
It's noon in Goudoude Diobe, where women traditionally spend hours stewing the midday meal. But there is no smell of cooking vegetables or spices, no clanging of multiple pots ? only the sound of roosters crowing and children crying.
Down a dusty trail, Samba Bayla's sister-in-law is starting to cook the only meal of the day for a family of 10, usually eaten around 2 p.m. She displays a small bowl of uncooked millet and another bowl with just a few small dried fish that altogether would fit inside a pair of clasped hands.
The knobby-kneed children crowd inside a building where the water's boiling, despite the scalding heat and heavy smoke. The midday temperatures here soar to 109 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius), and it's been a month since the restless children last ate meat, at a neighbor's wedding.
"The situation is difficult but there is nothing we can do," says Bayla. "We tell them just a few hours more."
It's not supposed to be this way in Senegal, a country of more than 12 million people where sushi bars dot the seaside capital. Still, most Senegalese live in rural areas, their lives and livelihoods beholden to the right recipe of rain.
Here in the northeast region of Matam, the drought couldn't have come at a worse time. The country is already battling high food prices. And because of the global economic downturn, fewer Senegalese in this region have family members working abroad and sending money back home.
When the rains here came late this year, they were sporadic at best. Crops failed, and the extra food stored for emergencies has been eaten. The next planting season is still months away.
Bayla grew millet and sorghum, while his wife sometimes made 1,000 francs ($2) selling incense. But grain production was down 36 percent over last year across Senegal. And those who want to buy millet after their own crops failed are paying 27 percent more compared to 2011.
"You are faced basically with households that have less of a harvest compared to what they usually have, and they are facing higher prices on the market," said Ingeborg Maria Breuer, Senegal's representative and country director for the U.N. World Food Programme.
On the dusty sand roads that lead to remote villages, goats stand on their hind legs to eat the only vegetation in sight ? thorny acacia trees.
The lucky villagers have relatives working in the capital of Dakar, or abroad in Europe. But even work there is harder to find; a job may only last a few months, so the amount trickling back to these rural communities has decreased considerably.
In better times, there was a vegetable garden in Goudoude Diobe, with cabbage and eggplants for a community of nearly 1,300 people. Families grew enough millet, sorghum and corn to feed the village and its 250 children.
Now most here, even the breast-feeding mothers, eat only a bowl of rice once a day. If they are lucky, it is cooked with oil.
___
What should have been dinnertime already has passed, and now Kadja Dembel Ba calculates that she needs to keep her children busy for at least two more hours.
Today she was lucky. She walked several hours to lug some rice back from the nearby town to her village, Fass, for her seven children.
But as she looks at her 3-year-old son Yaya Feyni, she knows it's not enough. While other boys play outside, he lies on a bed behind his mother, listless and pale. Yaya has always been small compared to his brothers, she says, and now he is sick and won't eat anything.
She tends to him while her 1-year-old son squirms in her lap, as her 5- and 7-year-olds hover nearby.
The family already has sold a cow to buy medicine for her husband, who is sick with a stomach ailment and cannot work. The drugs set the family back some 4,000 francs ($8) ? which could have bought them 10 kilograms of rice.
The stress of finding enough food for Kadja Dembel Ba's children seems unending. And by the time this lean season ends in a few months, there will be one more to feed, she says as she touches her pregnant belly.
On good days, the children in Fass will play with their friends until dark in the dusty village. Their stomachs, though, have not forgotten that no dinner was served.
It will be another restless night inside the family's thatched hut. Some of the children cannot sleep, Ba says. They are just too hungry.
Back in Goudoude Diobe, the wailing toddler's mother hopes for a few hours of peace before the night. Tomorrow, there will be no breakfast. There will be only the prayer she says every morning, asking God to help her family and her neighbors.
So far, it has not been answered.

May 27, 2012 -- There are so many Seattle?plumbing problems that can come up in an average home. Some problems would need to be fixed by professional Seattle?plumbers, while the most common ones can be fixed by any do-it-yourself homeowner.
The main advantage of fixing some of these common problems yourself is that it can save you a significant amount of money t in the long run. Some of the things that you can do on your own include:
Low water pressure. This is a very common problem at most homes,
which is often found at the sink faucet. To solve the problem, the
first course of action would be to check if the low pressure has
affected both the cold and hot water. If this is the case, then the most
probable cause of the problem would be the aerator.
The accumulation of calcium deposits tend to build
up gradually at the aerator, thus interfering with the water pressure. A
clogged aerator is quite easy to solve. Simply clean out your faucet by
removing any buildup and debris on it and you will be good to go.
Running toilet. Yet another common dilemma that affects most homes
today. So many things can contribute to a running toilet. First and
foremost, you will need to figure out the root cause of the problem.
Once you know the functional parts of your toilet that are contributing
to the problem, you can easily repair or replace it so as to stop the
running water.
Slow draining tub. This can also be fixed easily without the
intervention of a professional plumber. More often than not, the tub
drain would be clogged with hair which would naturally slow down the
water as it drains out. With the help of a pair of needle nose pliers,
or a zip-it tool, you can be able to clear all the debris that would
have clogged your drain. Seattle?Plumbing
does not have to be expensive if you have the time and knowledge to fix
common problems that end to crop up when you least expect them to.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraq's president on Saturday urged the nation's bickering factions to resolve the bitter political dispute that has gripped the government for nearly six months, warning that the crisis threatens to split the country.
President Jalal Talabani's statement, posted on his website, is the latest plea for an end to the crisis that has engulfed Iraq since Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government issued an arrest warrant for the country's Sunni vice president in December ? just as the last U.S. troops left the country.
Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish politicians have been holding meetings for weeks to discuss how to resolve the deadlock, including whether to try to push al-Maliki to step down before the end of his four-year term in 2014. Al-Maliki's critics accuse him of consolidating power and sidelining both Sunnis and Kurds, touching off a political impasse that has brought government work to a near standstill.
Already, the president of Iraq's northern self-rule Kurdish region has said he will hold a popular referendum on whether to secede if the deadlock is not solved by local elections set for September.
"I am firmly convinced of the seriousness of the current circumstances which require that we speed up efforts to sit at the table of constructive and fraternal dialogue," said Talabani, a Kurd, whose post is largely ceremonial.
Otherwise, he said, the crisis "could lead to growing tensions and exacerbate the risks and problems."
Talabani in the past has played the role of a mediator in Iraq's frequent political disputes.
The political threat to al-Maliki has shifted over several months, and it's not clear whether parliament will force the vote to oust him. The prime minister on Saturday issued his own plea for talks, saying "dialogue and clarity is what can bring good."

Proprietary golf clubs have been angrily derided as ?soulless? in reaction to a call by the chief executive of Burhill Golf and Leisure for VAT to be increased on membership subscriptions at private members? clubs and reduced at profit-making ones.
On Wednesday?the UK Golf Course Owners Association (UKGCOA) released a statement from its chairman, Burhill?s Colin Mayes, to the golf industry, in which he said that the levy should be reduced from 20 per cent to five per cent at?proprietary clubs, and increased from zero to five at?private members? clubs, which do not make a profit for their owners.
However, this has led to an angry backlash from those involved in private clubs, with one person even saying he hopes that several proprietary clubs close down.
Mr Mayes, CEO of Burhill Golf and Leisure, which runs 11 proprietary golf venues and was named by PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2010 as one of the UK?s top 100 companies with the fastest-growing profits, said:??Over the past few months, there has been significant debate and activity relating to the issue of tax inequality in golf.
?Both private members? golf clubs and proprietary golf clubs offer sport and recreation, yet are treated differently ? and, in our view, unfairly ? by HMRC.
?The UKGCOA is seeking an outcome that is fair and equitable, not just for the UK?s golf course proprietors, but golf and participation sports as a whole.
?And that?s why we seek a level playing field for all and to align ourselves with both England Golf and the Sports and Recreation Alliance by proposing a five per cent VAT rate for all sports clubs.?
Brian Inglis, a former secretary at a private members? golf club, responded: ?To suggest the reintroduction of any level of VAT on regular golf club membership is ludicrous and in my view this loses the UKGCOA some credibility as a body with the interests of our great game at heart.
?Proprietary clubs aren?t running golf facilities for the good of the public?s health and wellbeing, and now that the lean years have set in it?s becoming tiresome to hear the same drum being beaten over and over as it becomes harder to satisfy shareholders.
?I?ve never been one for frequenting the proprietary-type facilities, and with a few high quality and obvious exceptions, I?ve found them to be pretty soulless places from a golfing perspective, with the ?golf? part of it feeling kind of incidental to the main commercial activity going on. You?re more of a season ticket holder than a member.?
A separate industry insider, who said that while he does know of successful and profitable proprietary clubs, and unsuccessful private ones, nonetheless even stated that he hoped that some proprietary clubs will close down.
The man, who works for several companies that supply products to both private members? and proprietary golf clubs, said: ?Too many ? largely proprietary ? golf?clubs were built in the gold rush after The R&A stated in the early 1990s that proprietors could make money by building new venues. Around 50 per cent of clubs are now losing members and money. If those new clubs hadn?t been built then the existing clubs would still have waiting lists.
?If only 50 per cent of those clubs had been built I think we?d see something much closer to equilibrium.
?If there were less proprietary clubs, and that?s what market forces suggest is needed, and if dare say it, they deserved to fade away, go under the plough, whatever, what?s the problem?
?And if the current rate of 20 per cent VAT helps them go there, that would be a good thing, wouldn?t it??
Mr Mayes also stated that the results of this month?s Chipping Sodbury case are not likely to be known for many months. He said it will take two to three months to find out the tribunal?s decision and, as the losing side is likely to appeal, a further 12 months until that is resolved. He added that the decision will probably affect all sports? clubs, and not just golf clubs, and praised England Golf for the work it has done on trying to achieve a fair tax regime for all golf clubs.

A Colorado mountaineer recounts the harrowing details about the deaths of several climbers who perished over the weekend trying to reach the summit of Mount Everest. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.
By Rebecca Ruiz
A traffic jam on Mount Everest turned deadly last weekend, with fatalities being blamed on the bottleneck of climbers trying to ascend or descend the summit, reports from the mountain say.
At least four climbers died near the summit over the weekend and three others were said to be missing and feared dead, climbers told NBC News' Miguel Almaguer. But Alan Arnette, a climber who is blogging the 2012 Everest expedition season,?reported?that seven had died over the weekend.
The bottleneck developed after weeks of bad weather prevented climbers from summit attempts until Saturday. When the weather cleared, an estimated 150 people rushed to reach the peak, according to Almaguer.
"When there?s a bottleneck on Everest, you have a long line of climbers that really can?t pass one another," Arnette told Almaguer on TODAY Wednesday morning. "They?re stuck, they're using up their oxygen. And as a result they get cold and potentially make bad decisions."
This deadly combination of factors has caused fatalities in the past. In 1996, a bottleneck and bad weather led to the deaths of eight climbers in one day, an infamous event that was recounted in the book "Into Thin Air."
Jonathan Kedrowski, a climber on the peak who said he passed some of the victims while descending, recounted the tragic aftermath of this season?s bottleneck to Almaguer.
One man wasn't wearing a hat or gloves. "He was kind of looking at me kind of zombie-like," Kedrowski said. "Anybody that would pass him he would reach out and try to grab you. The gentleman?s hand was frozen solid."
It is believed some of the victims died from hypothermia and brain swelling, triggered by the high altitude and a lack of oxygen.
Among the confirmed deaths are Eberhard Schaaf, 61, from Aachen, Germany, Shriya Shah, a 32-year-old Nepal-born woman living in Canada, and a Korean, Song Won-Bin. Discovery News reported that a Nepalese official said 55-year-old Chinese climber Ha Wenyi had also been found dead.
"Schaaf died at the South Summit of Sagarmatha due to altitude sickness," said Ang Tshering Sherpa, chief of the Asian Trekking company that organized the expedition, referring to the Nepali name of the mountain. He said the body was lying on the mountain.?
At least two Sherpas?died last month??-- one after falling into a crevasse and the other reportedly from altitude sickness, according to?National Geographic magazine.?More than 200 people have ?died climbing Everest since 1950.

Eric Simonson, Himalayan program director of?International Mountain Guides, told msnbc.com that his team of 11 climbers and 11 Sherpas reached the summit on Saturday. The group, he said, were toward the front of the line as they?began their attempts at 8 p.m. and started reaching the summit at 4:50 a.m. The team returned safely to their camps.
He said choppers were flying to Camp 2 on Tuesday to pick up injured climbers who successfully descended. "The full story of who was hurt and who wasn?t, who dropped out and who didn?t, won?t be known for weeks," Simonson said.
Often, he said, survival comes down to whether or not climbers are realistic about their oxygen stores. "It?s like watching the needle on your gas tank. And if you know you still have to drive 200 miles and you see the gas tank is getting down to one-quarter, you?ve got to be able to do the mental math and know you?re going to stop and fill up." For Everest climbers, this might mean abandoning a summit attempt altogether if one's oxygen is too low.
The deaths mark a controversial season on Everest. On May 5, Himalayan Experience announced that it was canceling its expedition because of safety concerns. Minimal snowpack and warm temperatures, among other factors, had led to dangerous conditions, including rock fall and avalanches, the company?said.
Michael Fagin, who provides forecasting services for Everest teams and runs everestweather.com from Redmond, Wash., said the spring had been very dry and windy. In the past week, winds had reached up to 80 mph; climbers on Everest prefer them under 30 mph.
Related:?Climber's sky-high dreams dashed far below Everest summit
Last week, the National Geographic-North Face expedition, led by accomplished mountaineer Conrad Anker,?canceled?its plans to summit via the West Ridge because of icy conditions, but will still attempt to reach the peak via a different route.
Another window to summit is forecast for May 26, and Simonson expects another bottleneck as a second wave of climbers try to reach the peak.
"The bottom line is this is how it is on Mount Everest and how it has been for many years," Simonson said. "When the weather gets good, people want to summit."

To keep your home tidy, it is essential to have enough cabinets. They provide the perfect space for storing things in an orderly manner. They also allow you to keep things out of sight when not in use.
The kitchen is usually fitted with the most cabinetry. They allow you to keep your spices, flour, dishes and cooking utensils handy without adding clutter to your working areas. Typical materials for these units are wood and metal.
Bathroom cabinetry gives you a place to store your fresh towels, linens and more. Under the sink, adding an enclosure will allow you to hide the pipes and store cleaning supplies.
Freestanding cabinetry allows you to add elegant storage space anywhere you need it. Try putting a pantry near the kitchen for extra spices. You can also store serving pieces and centerpieces right in the dining room if you add a cabinet to one of the corners.
With all of the uses for a cabinet, it?s no wonder that most houses have plenty of them. Take a look around your living space. You?re sure to find plenty of places to put in another unit or two.

To change and grow, you must make the choice to change your ways. You must choose change and learn how to accept it without reservation.
Focus on learning how to stay calm in difficult circumstances, rather than becoming irrational and emotional. Develop techniques that will help you relieve stress and stay calm when difficulties arise. Make the time to stop and breathe.
You need a good attitude for personal development. Being a pessimistic sourpuss will hinder your efforts to get ahead and could even make your situation worse. Instead, stay positive and tell yourself that having a good attitude will help you achieve your goals.
Make others feel good by offering them compliments. By being kind to others, you will also begin to care about yourself more.
Be aware of your physical limitations when reaching for your goals and do not overwhelm your body. It is good to set high goals and strive for them, but try to be aware of your limitations. You still need to take care of your body when trying to achieve a goal. Neglecting the physical requirements of your body will actually work against your self improvement efforts.
Avoid shopping as a way to comfort yourself. Shopping to make yourself feel better will only result in high bills, more stress and excess possessions that clutter your home and your life.
Taking steps to improve your health is a very important part of personal development. Creating a healthy lifestyle requires you to stay motivated at all times. If your health is a priority, you have a better chance of feeling your best and therefore being a better contributor in other aspects of your life.
Make sure that you have specific and tangible personal development goals. By having specific goals in your mind, you'll have a greater ability in breaking the path into doable pieces in order to accomplish the goal. Having goals laid out will increase your likelihood of being able to overcome the challenges you encounter, and you will feel good about yourself once you do.
Stay in top physical condition to maximize your personal development success. Exercise regularly, get adequate sleep every night and enjoy a healthy diet to help you continue your personal growth. While it appears easy and simple, getting in shape can also be very challenging.
One good general personal development strategy is to set your priorities according to what you think are the most important things in life. Therefore, you must value your best and make it an important aspect of your life.
Every now and then, you may find yourself making a poor decision when it comes to food. Stress is as bad for your body as a piece of cake, so remember that life is too short to sweat the small stuff.
Instead of bragging abut your achievements and awards, ask other people about what they have accomplished that they are most proud of. This will provide you valuable insight into the others around you, and enable you to see how much others contribute each and every day.
Always be modest and humble. In the cosmic overview, humans are just a small blip. Every individual can gain valuable insight from those around him, especially when acknowledging that no one person has all the answers. Keep this in mind and seize the chance to learn something new whenever you can. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish and learn when your mind is open to new things.
Encouraging faith by love will lead to a higher level of personal development. You can not have faith without love. You cannot consider your faith satisfactory if you do nothing to express it. Put your faith into action by encouraging charity toward those around you, and being an example of how to love both yourself and those in your immediate circles.
If you suffer from anxiety, try going to see a movie with a friend. You will be thrust into a busy setting and out of your comfort zone, but you will not have to excessively socialize with others. In addition, it enables you to accustom yourself to being in an environment with many other people.
Rid your life of unnecessary stress. Take time to process events before reacting to avoid creating unnecessary tension in your life. Know that things sometimes go wrong when working on a goal, so find ways to overcome the obstacle instead of feeling defeated when they pop up.
The number one rule when you're trying to make your personal development a high priority is to learn to listen to your body. Listen to the signals your body sends you: tiredness, hunger, pain or discomfort. Respond right away to them, for the sake of your health. You need a healthy body to serve you for years to come. If you disregard your body's intelligence, you might find in the future that it will not be able to take care of you.
Hopefully, you can incorporate the ideas in this article into the lives of both you and your loved ones. A vast amount of water is used to produce the food and products that nations consume. Large population is the greatest factor, but inefficient agriculture or dependence on water-intensive cuisine can exacerbate demand; meat consumption accounts for 30 percent of the U.S. water footprint.
Certain countries, such as India and the U.S., also export significant quantities of water in the form of food and products, despite their own robust consumption. Populous nations that have little land or little water are huge net importers.
Those insights come from engineers Arjen Y. Hoekstra and Mesfin M. Mekonnen of the University of Twente in the Neth?erlands. Over the long term, net exporters may want to alter trade policies to avoid creating their own water shortages or raise prices to reflect the cost of increasingly scarce water resources. Inefficient water nations might improve agricultural practices. And net importers might lower exports to save water for domestic use.

Hello everyone,
Well, the machine that runs the WWFRN stream has decided to overheat and blow a video card! ?We'll arrange to have this repaired this week but the stream will be down until further notice. ?This great little machine has been running 24 hours a day 7 days a week for the last several years, and it looks as though the left fan has stopped spinning, which resulted in the other problems. ?Sometimes we all need a rest I guess.
?
Here's your perfect excuse for heading outside and enjoying what's left of the weekend.
Thanks for your patience! ?

<P><b>LAS VEGAS</b> — As was expected, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1685460/justin-bieber-boyfriend-billboard-music-awards.jhtml">Justin Bieber's show-stopping performance of "Boyfriend"</a> at Sunday's (May 20) <i>Billboard</i> Music Awards brought out the squeals and the swag.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Justin Bieber Breaks Down Billboard Awards 'Boyfriend' Performance" id="vid:770729.id:1685461" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>When MTV News caught up with Bieber on the white carpet for the awards show, just before his big number, the teenage superstar said his expectations for the evening were relatively simple: He just wanted everyone to have fun and to be able to show off all the hard work he's been putting into his dance moves.</P><P>"This performance is going to be fun. I practiced a lot in the dance studio," Bieber said. "I've been working hard, and I can't wait to show the fans what I've been working so hard on." Since the other members of Bieber's musical family — Carly Rae Jepsen and Usher — were also performing, did the trio discuss any feelings of friendly competition or joke around about which performance would be better than the others?</P><P>"[It's] not a competition. It's all love," Bieber said with a smile. "We're all a family. Carly is my artist, and I'm Usher's artist, so it's kind of cool that we're all performing here, together.</P><P>For first-time <i>Billboard</i> Music Awards attendee and performer Jepsen, the goal for the night was to remember to take a moment to soak it all in.</P><P>"I want to feel happy when I'm onstage," she said. "A lot of times you kind of get caught up in the performance and then you worry and then it's over and you think, 'I didn't even enjoy it.' So tonight, after [having a successful] soundcheck this morning, it's going to be about having fun. It's me and my band, we've got some dancers and some fun lights, it's going to be an interesting show."</P><P><i>Who had the best </i>Billboard<i> performance: Justin, Usher or Carly?
