NATO's 'improper disposal' of Qurans inflames Afghan protesters (+video)

More than 1,000 Afghans protested after hearing reports that NATO personnel improperly disposed of some Qurans at a base in Afghanistan.

America's hopes of winning the hearts and minds of the Afghan people have suffered yet another blow.

Plans by NATO personnel to burn Qurans at Bagram Air Base north of Kabul have set off violent protests, with at least 1,000 demonstrators throwing stones and calling for US and NATO forces to leave Afghanistan.

That burning Qurans might anger Afghans has been made pretty clear before: In 2010 a US evangelical pastor, Rev. Terry Jones, threatened to burn Qurans outside his Florida church, and a year later, when followers of that US pastor actually carried out the threat. Eleven United Nations personnel were massacred in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e Sharif in April 2011, after protestors broke into their compound, apparently seeking revenge for the Reverend Jones?s actions. A separate protest in the southern city of Kandahar at the time left nine people dead and dozens injured.

On Tuesday, the NATO commander, Gen. John R. Allen, released a statement apologizing for the planned burning, saying it was not intentional according to The New York Times:

?ISAF personnel at Bagram Air Base improperly disposed of a large number of Islamic religious materials which included Korans,? ?the statement said.

?When we learned of these actions, we immediately intervened and stopped them. The materials recovered will be properly handled by appropriate religious authorities.?

Global Business Leaders Gather in New York to Mark International ...

(3BL Media / theCSRfeed)?February 27, 2012, New York, NY ? Technique As True Religion Jeans Invention ? Club Penguin Pure ...

Rather than look at True Religion Jeans approach like a choice of choices, here is another strategy: creation or invention.

Strategic organizing is not technique

Strategic Planning, often synonymous with Yearly Organizing, details how you?re likely to get exactly where you have determined to go. It is a description of how you?ll achieve your goals ? individuals milestones you established in structuring your business strategy. Strategic Planning is operational in naturel, it examines the certain steps you want to take over the coming time period. Strategic Preparing could be critical ? and soon after you?ve a Method, it?s frequently a superb True Religion Outlet notion to develop a Strategic Plan.

But Strategic Planning isn?t Technique. Strategy could be the ?what? you and your business are going to become, and the broad method to how you are heading to do that. As an example, your business will turn out to be the number www.officialtruereligions.com one vendor of internet-hosted healthcare data applications, achieved by means of freeware distribution to HMOs and clinics, compensated for having a back-end, per-patient royalty. Strategic Planning appears at the specifics of how you will get there ? which associations you?ll joint-venture with, how a lot of sales people you will include this yr, what kind of advertising you may use, regardless of whether to spend for page-views or click-throughs, etc. The strategic program will itemize the distinct steps you will take inside a provided time-frame, and the particular results individuals actions will create.

But think about filling your new car with gas, turning the ignition crucial, putting the automobile in gear, acquiring within the freeway, and placing the pedal-to-the-metal. Full speed forward. Think about that for a moment. Wait a moment ? exactly where are you currently heading? A lot of organizations jump headlong into the strategic organizing procedure, without having turning into distinct about exactly where they may be going. Certain they?ve a path ? North, perhaps; into the net Applications space, possibly. In the event you execute the strategy, your business will surely end up somewhere. But could it be exactly where you wished to go? Approach defines the destination, and regardless of whether you will just take a scenic way or perhaps a fast way, and if you want relaxation stops. Strategic planning identifies the distinct highways and the certain streets.

Have you bothered to think about where you need to go recently? Most entrepreneurs, most businesses, started with the notion of what they had been attempting to develop. But that might happen to be an extended time ago. Possibly it is time to take into account this query once again.

Approach isn?t a set of alternatives

Picture you are within your auto again. This time, it really is Sunday, so you and the family are likely for any drive. Where are you headed? ?We?ll let?s see?, you say to yourself, ?How considerably gas do we?ve got, and which streets hold the least targeted traffic?? A lot of firms think approach is about evaluating a set of choices, typically in terms of accessible resources, or an aggressive response. They say things like ? ?We have only 12 advancement sources accessible to us, which indicates we can True Religion Jeans carry two important program feature sets to market place, and XYZ Co. has just introduced compatibility with our databases. What exactly are we going to perform??

Approach is not incrementalism or inertia

Or they think about approach with regards to increments. Last calendar year you increased earnings by 20%; does that imply this calendar year you need to shoot for growing profits by 20%. Or 25%? Or, considering that you added three new modules last calendar year, and reduced consumer response time by 33%, should you program to perform the same, or some thing a little much better, this 12 months?

These would be worthy objectives, and this strategy is legitimate. But accomplishing these kinds of targets will not essentially alter your company?s connection to the market. Absolutely nothing will really be changed ? not you, not your people, not your organization ? and never the world.

It?s been said that insanity is carrying out the same factor over and more than once again, and expecting various results. When you do exactly the same points, only greater, only tougher, only far more, only smarter, what you will get is much more of what you have already acquired. That?s great, so long as you have established that more of what you have received is proper for this phase of one?s company?s life cycle.

Approach is definitely an creation

Strategy is a thing you make up. Your approach can be a statement of what you are going to do as an organization to comprehend your company eyesight: what particularly will you achieve, what meaning will your firm have, and the way will you generate value and earnings. Don?t disregard your past results. Just don?t enable your method to become constrained by them. Don?t ignore the market. Just do not drop into the entice of permitting your competitors? actions outline what yours will probably be. And definitely do not ignore your customers ? just don?t think that your customers? desires and wishes will be the only measure of what you need to seek out to achieve. These references ? previous results, markets, competitors, buyers ? must be taken into consideration.

After which, what it boils down to is this: your approach could be the path your firm will take, simply because you said so.

An invented approach inspires you. Because it fulfills your eyesight for the company, and since you see how the realization of one?s strategy helps make an important distinction inside the world, it inspires your group, your customers, your potential clients. An invented technique energizes all your constituents, exactly where incrementalism just seems like a lot more function. An invented technique can propel your enterprise to greatness. An invented method can phone forth achievements beyond that which you presently contemplate possible. Breakthroughs and blockbusters are never ever launched on incremental enhancement. Like Athena, they spring from the heads of their inventors. And invented techniques can adjust your company?s romantic relationship towards the marketplace and towards the world.

Inventing technique

The route to making approach is simple ? asking the best questions.

What direction can the business consider *now* to understand your vision? What worth proposition will you offer buyers? What significant difference will you make in your market? What meaningful difference will you make inside your globe? How do you want to impact the lives of the men and women, your clients, your customers? Your household? Answer these concerns and you?re on highway to inventing your strategy.

Are you currently building some thing totally new, or are you currently improving an current concept? What exactly are the dimensions with the effect you wish to have? Will it be faster? Far better? Less costly? Less difficult? Less hazardous? Much more deluxe? Far more handy? Much more transportable? Far more entertaining? More universal?

Subsequent, from a high-level viewpoint, how will you marshal your resources and time your maneuvers to provide that value and make that distinction? For instance, Microsoft?s desktop applications method is usually to allow other businesses originate item classes, wait to see which ones catch on, then provide out a reduced expense Microsoft option, and industry the heck out of it. This method defines a what, not a how. It does not describe which items, the way to create them, or once they will probably be rolled-out.

You will find no guidelines in approach

Strategy just isn?t evolutionary; it is groundbreaking. Don?t presume the aged guidelines use or allow them manual your pondering. Breaking rules may possibly in fact be a way to conceive of strategy. Inquire your self, ?What rules can we break?? Consider which obsolete beliefs restrain growth within your business or within your market. Make up your personal assumptions. Check them ? initial inside your mind. Einstein conceived with the Idea of Relativity employing what he referred to as a gedanken experiment ? an experiment inside the thoughts.

Don?t be concerned about implementation?yet

Although you?re contemplating Approach, do not be concerned about whether you?ve got the wherewithal to put into action what you will be considering. Should you do worry within this way, you might be most likely to compromise from the get-go. There is going to be a lot of space for compromise later, in case you should. Disregard the useful resource constraints which dog you all through the yr. You may deal with these once the time happens. Writer Gary Hamil suggests that one definition of strategy incorporate the ??quest to overcome useful resource constraints via an inventive and never-ending pursuit of far better reference leverage.?

I?ve my technique. Now what?

Alright. At some time quickly, you have to consider implementation. When you have created a strategy you think is likely to make a difference and result in greater returns, you have to figure out how to help it become take place provided all the constraints you work below. That is certainly where the Strategic and Tactical Planning True Religion Outlet arrives in. That is the subsequent article.

How you can Select Very good Parrot Breeders When Purchasing ...

Looking for a pet parrot? Even though it truly is achievable to find a well-adjusted and nutritious child parrot through typical avenues these as pet merchants or labeled ?parrots for sale? ads, in most circumstances the vendor is commonly unwilling or not able to offer every one of the information you?ll need to care for your new bird. There?ll also be some breeders who will just be in it for your cash. This could not discourage you, however, considering that the most important portion of parrot breeders are caring folks who love the breed and invest nearly all of their time bonding with these superb birds.

Australia set 253 for India at Sydney

NEW DELHI: Ben Hilfenhaus took a brilliant return catch to dismiss Virender Sehwag (5) in the second over of the Indian innings after Australia scored 252/9 at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.

Scorecard | Points Table

Sehwag who finished with a brilliant 3/43 earlier during the day, failed to shine with the bat and could score just five before falling to Hilfenhaus.

Earlier, a disciplined show by India bowlers in slog overs restricted Australia to 252/9 in 50 overs.

After a poor start, Australian innings was consolidated with some gritty knock by opener David Warner, David Hussey and Matthew Wade.

However, a phenomenal comeback by the visitors prevented Australia from scoring big as the hosts could score just 40 runs in last eight overs, losing four wickets.

David Warner top scored for Australia, making 68 off 66 deliveries. His fiery knock rescued Australia from a dismal start after they elected to bat.

David Hussey, who appeared fortunate not to be given out on 17 for obstructing a throw for an attempted run out, chipped in with 54 off 64 to take over as the leading runscorer in the series with 338.

Hussey blocked a throw by Suresh Raina with his right hand but umpires deemed he was preventing injury and he was allowed to bat on much to Indian captain MS Dhoni's fury.

The hosts lost opener Shane Watson and Peter Forrest, who scored his maiden ton against Sri Lanka in the last match, cheaply to Praveen Kumar.

Mike Hussey too failed to fire and returned back to pavilion after a poor running between the wickets. A misfield by Suresh Raina at short cover prompted Hussey to go for the second but he was sent back by his partner David Warner as R Ashwin whipped the bails to end Hussey's 10 runs knock.

Warner, however, stood strong against the Indian attack and scored over run-a-ball to take the innings past 100-mark.

At the score of 107, Ravindra Jadeja got rid of Warner to give Australia the fourth blow. Warner went for the sweep that got the top edge as Suresh Raina ran back from the square leg and Irfan Pathan coming in from deep fine leg. There was no calling between them and crashed into each other.

David Hussey and Matthew Wade then steadied Australian innings with a gritty stand for the fifth wicket. The duo rebuilt Australia with their respective half-century.

But just after Australian scorecard crossed 200-mark, Indian bowlers scripted a perfect comeback to dent Australian progress with quick wickets.

Umesh Yadav got the crucial breakthrough for India in the 40 th over as he sent back Wade (56) after his hard fought half century.

Wade, who came to bat after David Warner's dismissal, shared a solid 94-run stand with Hussey for the fifth wicket. Yadav got Wade caught behind stumps to break a solid 94-run stand between him and Hussey for the fifty wicket.

In his next over, Yadav ended Hussey's challenge just after the right-hander got his half-century. Hussey scored 54 before being caught behind stumps by Indian skipper MS Dhoni.

Part-time spinner Virender Sehwag then claimed his first victim McKay to give Australia seventh blow at the score of 217. Sehwag's magical spin the sent back Brett Lee and Daniel Christian to reduce Australia to 252/9 in 50 overs.

Clint McKay replaced fellow paceman Ryan Harris in the other change to the Australia team from Friday's three-wicket loss to Sri Lanka in Hobart.

Australian regular skipper Michael Clarke has not recovered properly from his hamstring injury although he scored a half-century in Friday's defeat against Sri Lanka.

India are playing with Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir as skipper MS Dhoni dropped the idea of rotating the top three players.

India's survival in the series at stake as the defeat against the Australia on Sunday, who were outsmarted by Sri Lanka in their previous game, means the World Cup champions will be taking an early flight home.

The Men In Blue can still make it if they win both their remaining matches, they'll surely be through with 18 points.

If they lose one of their two matches, they will require a bonus point in the other and hope that either Australia or Sri Lanka do them a favour.

If India beat Australia with a bonus point in Sydney on Sunday and lose to Sri Lanka in Hobart on Tuesday, they will have to hope for Sri Lanka to beat Australia in Hobart on Friday.

If they lose to Australia and beat Sri Lanka with a bonus point, they'll have to hope for Australia to beat Sri Lanka. In that scenario, Australia will qualify with 22 points and India and Sri Lanka will be tied with 15 points.

Teams:

India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (C), Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin and Praveen Kumar.

Australia: Shane Watson (C), David Warner, Matthew Wade, Peter Forrest, David Hussey, Mike Hussey, Dan Christian, Clint McKay, Brett Lee, Ben Hilfenhaus and Xavier Doherty.

(AP) ? Each year at the Oscars ceremony, Hollywood says goodbye to stars and filmmakers who've passed away. This year, the award show will bid adieu to the Kodak Theatre.

Just a decade ago, the glamorous 3,300-seat venue was touted as the Oscars' first permanent home, but the 131-year-old company has forfeited its sponsorship of the venue as it struggles with bankruptcy.

The move symbolizes Kodak's fading star power in Hollywood. Although seven of the nine "Best Picture" nominees were shot on Kodak film, the industry's increasing use of digital editing and projection has ravaged the company's printing business.

About half of the world's commercial screens now show movies from digital projectors, and by some estimates, film reels will soon be a thing of the past.

"35-millimeter is coming to the end of its life," said David Hancock, head of film and cinema for research firm IHS Screen Digest. "In four years' time there will be no film printing business."

Kodak film has long been a favorite of cinematographers. But more and more movies are shot using digital cameras, and the notion of a "cutting-room floor" littered with celluloid scraps has given way to studios with computerized tools such as Avid Technology Inc.'s Avid DS and Apple Inc.'s Final Cut Pro.

At their peak, motion pictures accounted for more than 12 billion feet of film processing each year, enough to reach the moon and back five times, according to IHS. This year, IHS predicts film processing will shrink to about 4 billion feet as an increasing number of theaters receive their "films" by satellite or via hard drives delivered by courier.

"We no longer ship (film) to most theaters," Philippe Dauman, chief executive of Paramount Pictures owner Viacom Inc., told a conference last month. "We have helped them implement digital distribution so we don't have to make so many prints."

The billions of dollars that major studios save on film ? and its costly ingredient, silver ? has resulted in revenue declines for the Eastman Kodak Co. division that once accounted for the vast majority of the company's overall revenue.

In the first half of 2011, revenue from the division that makes motion picture stock film was $763 million, about half the $1.57 billion it posted in the same period in 2008.

Film printing volume was crucial to Kodak. Although it takes about 1 million feet to shoot a feature film, studios need about 100 million feet to print enough copies for the widest of North American releases.

Kodak sees its future in commercial imaging devices and printing. Still, the motion picture business is significant, accounting for somewhere under a quarter of its revenues. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January with $6.7 billion in debt.

Kodak is unable to afford the marketing boost the Oscars once gave it.

Last week, a bankruptcy court judge approved its early exit from a 20-year naming rights deal it signed with Kodak Theatre owner CIM Group in 1999. As a result, Kodak won't have to pay the $3.6 million annual naming fee.

The Kodak Theatre, which was custom-built for the awards show and first played host to the ceremony in 2002, will be described to millions of viewers on Sunday simply as the "Hollywood & Highland Center."

The judge's decision came too late to remove the signs outside, which may cast a sense of gloom over an industry already rocked by technological change.

"I think everyone looks at Kodak's name coming off the theater with a degree of sadness mixed with respect," said Chris McGurk, chief executive of Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp., which installs digital projectors for thousands of movie screens and is getting into the business of putting live video feeds into theaters. "It's just that the tide has shifted. The digital rollout is moving great guns. It's unfortunate that the great companies that helped build the film business can't all be part of it going forward."

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which declined to comment for this story, is reportedly considering a move to a different venue.

The Academy won't suffer financially from the unpaid fee, since it doesn't have a direct relationship with Kodak and most of its $100 million annual budget comes from licensing the Oscar ceremony's broadcast, according to Moody's Investors Service. The Academy leases the space from CIM Group.

It's not as if Kodak didn't see the digital future coming. Last October, Kodak licensed its patented laser projection technology to Imax Corp. to allow digital projectors to work in domes and other huge theaters that were once reserved for film.

Even if its name is gone from the Oscars, Kodak will still be a part of filmmaking, as long as Academy voters continue to pick movies with that rich, grainy "film look." Kodak stock film was used to shoot Oscar-nominated movies such as "War Horse," ''The Tree of Life," and "The Help," even though the captured images were converted for digital editing and delivery.

Mark Graziano, senior vice president of post-production at "War Horse" maker DreamWorks Studios, said the end of the sponsorship serves as a reminder of the "lost art" of film production, and of the workers who once had titles like "negative cutter." It used to take two weeks, for example, just to prepare a rough cut for studio executives to view in screening rooms. The process is nearly instantaneous now.

"It makes you nostalgic for the days when we only worked with 35-millimeter film," Graziano said, noting that film still has a place at many studios. "You look at many filmmakers that swear by film capture, their movies always look gorgeous. It's hard to turn your back on that."

Europe Plans Exascale Funding Above U.S. Levels

Instead of saying "welcome to 3rd-world America", say instead "welcome to prewar America".

Seriously - the ongoing wailing about "the US is falling behind" is getting a little tiresome.

First, lets dispense with US exceptionalism. I love my country, and there are a number of notably special things about its situation geographically, culturally, historically, etc that make it a unique place but Americans are not (and have never been) intrinsically smarter, prettier, faster, stronger, or any way different than any other cross-section of humanity. We have the same proportions of brilliant scientists and racist a-holes as pretty much any other random bunch of 330 million people you'd gather in the world.

Secondly, and more directly to my point - to fear the US 'falling behind' speaks to a staggering level of ignorance of the last 100 years of world history.

In 1912 - a mere 100 years ago - the list of great powers in the world would have been Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Austria/Hungary, and only marginally, the USA. The US was a largely agrarian country of mostly first-generation immigrants, late industrializing and largely disconnected with Old World affairs.

Yet after two catastrophic continent-spanning conflicts in 25 years (and a not-insignificant influenza epidemic), the three leading European states were prostrate - two from their almost-Pyrrhic victory (UK, France), one lay dismembered and occupied after being pummeled nearly into dust (Germany) - one of the powers entirely ceased to exist (A/H), one emerged from civil war at least superficially changed (Russia - USSR), one emerged from nowhere (Japan), and only one was basically unscathed - the United States.

In the two conflicts total deaths over the span of these listed powers totalled something more than 50 million. US fatalities were approximately 500,000. Possibly more significantly, the wars had completely devastated the industrial, technological, and even cultural infrastructure of the old world, with the subsequent Cold War arguably further contributing - paralyzing truly independent European development for 4+ decades.

The US was in the historically-unique position of being a superpower by default, not by inclination. US armies had not marched all over the world subjugating enemies, conquering colonies, and gathering territory for the motherland. (Certainly the US had engaged in its own efforts in colonialism like other Powers of the day, much of it naked military conquest barely cloaked as 'liberatory' exercises.) But it's clear that even the burgeoning jingoism of the early-20th-century US wasn't posed as a challenge to the Great Powers, except insofar as it was competitive to Old World efforts to colonize and dominate the largely-unexploited Western Hemisphere. Instead, the US was largely aimed at internal development, a patronizing benevolence toward other peoples of the Western Hemisphere, and essentially (even as late as the early 20th-century) a *revolutionary* geopolitical stance vis a vis the Old World states and their efforts to "lock down" most of the undeveloped world into agreed-upon exclusionary spheres of influence.

For emerging in 1945 as the dominant superpower on the planet, it should be astonishing that the US began the 20th century with a second-rate navy and almost no army to speak of.

In fact, as a superpower, one might point out that the US has been particularly clumsy. Certainly, many anti-Americans (and we've generated many of them) would point to the scores of bad US foreign policy decisions as clear signs of its essentially-malignant nature; in point of fact, most if not all were simply colossal blunders born of a government run by unsophisticated and unsubtle men born and raised in a country that was (in their day) fairly irrelevant. Wilson's naivete in insisting on national boundaries in post-WWI Europe almost guaranteed non-self-sufficient states vulnerable to Caesarist populism. Metal Roofing Is A Green Building Choice | I succeed by helping you ...

Posted in | Blogging, Business

Metal roofing is part of a growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products. People are seeking out recycled, organic, and environmentally friendly products to supply many needs including food, clothing, household items, personal care items, home and building design, and building materials. Research and case studies show that use of these eco-friendly items are not only good for the individual in terms of natural health, comfort, or energy savings, but are also good for the environment in far-reaching ways.

Metal roofing falls into the category of eco-friendly products for many reasons. Benefits of metal roofing that affect the homeowner, including energy savings, product longevity, and recyclability, are also benefiting our earth.

Energy Savings ? compared to dark gray asphalt shingles, a metal roof can save a homeowner up to 25% in cooling costs. This is due to the reflective and emissive properties of the roof that reduce the heat penetrating the roof deck by about 45 percent. Energy savings are not just good for the wallet, they are also good for the environment. Less energy consumed means less fossil fuels burned and reduced pollution, smog, and urban heat islands.

Longevity ? a metal roof is expected to last over 50 years which is 2 to 3 times longer than an asphalt shingle roof. This provides a good chance that a metal roof will be the last roof a homeowner will need to install on their home, reducing the time, energy, money, and materials that would be spent on re-roofing. In addition to saving on building materials, the longevity of a metal roof also saves on the waste of asphalt shingles entering landfills 2 and 3 times over.

Recyclable Materials ? metal roofing contributes to a growing market for recycled steel, including old cars, dishwashers, and refrigerators. All steel roofs contain at least 25% recycled content and, at the end of it?s useful service life, a metal roof is 100% recyclable. Compare this to the tons of asphalt shingles and other roofing materials that are disposed of in landfills each year.

Metal roofs are ?green? all the way through ? from construction, to use, through the end of their long lives. These eco-friendly properties satisfy a demand for green building practices, energy savings, and green home design that so many homeowners are seeking. Whether for new home construction, home improvement, energy efficiency, or re-roofing needs, metal roofing is a green building choice that more and more consumers are choosing.

When planning with a contractor for green home building, be sure to check on the quality of the roofing product. A metal roofing specialty company is ideal although it is still important to research the product and investigate warranties available, guarantees from the company, energy savings expected, and reviews and testimonials from customers. There are varying qualities of metal roofing systems and roofing companies so doing this research will help get you the best green home building product available in your area. Metal roofing is an investment that will pay off in leaps and bounds throughout the long life of the roof, helping you to feel good about your choice both for yourself and for the world around you.

Nokia Siemens HSPA+ Multiflow lets one device connect to two cell sites simultaneously

If you've ever used a cell phone while moving, then you've probably experienced the depressed network connectivity that becomes more of an issue as you move further away from any given tower. Some of us are even unfortunate enough to reside or work right at the edge of a cell, forced to live with poor connectivity for much of every day. A new feature called HSPA+ Multiflow may offer some relief, "delivering double the data speed and up to 50 percent faster response compared to existing HSPA+ networks," according to Nokia Siemens, which will be demonstrating the technology at Mobile World Congress later this month. Essentially, Multiflow allows compatible devices on the edge of a cell to connect to two sites simultaneously, letting your device send and receive data between two base stations at once. Multiflow will be available as a software update for Single RAN systems, so it could make its way to a cell site near you just after Nokia Siemens flips the switch during the second half of 2013. Full PR is just past the break.

UCSF study reveals possible cause of common excessive crying problem

A study of mothers and their young babies by neurologists at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has shown that mothers who suffer migraine headaches are more than twice as likely to have babies with colic than mothers without a history of migraines.

The work raises the question of whether colic may be an early symptom of migraine and therefore whether reducing stimulation may help just as reducing light and noise can alleviate migraine pain. That is significant because excessive crying is one of the most common triggers for shaken baby syndrome, which can cause death, brain damage and severe disability.

"If we can understand what is making the babies cry, we may be able to protect them from this very dangerous outcome," said Amy Gelfand, MD, a child neurologist with the Headache Center at UCSF who will present the findings at the American Academy of Neurology's 64th Annual Meeting, which takes place in New Orleans in April.

Colic, or excessive crying in an otherwise healthy infant, has long been associated with gastrointestinal problemspresumably caused by something the baby ate. However, despite more than 50 years of research, no definitive link has been proven between infant colic and gastrointestinal problems. Babies who are fed solely breast milk are as likely to have colic as those fed formula, and giving colicky babies medication for gas does not help.

"We've known about colic for a really long time," Gelfand said, "but despite this fact, no one really knows why these babies are crying."

How the Study was Conducted

In the UCSF study, Gelfand and her colleagues surveyed 154 new mothers bringing their infants to the pediatrician for routine check ups at two months, the age when colicky crying typically peaks. The mothers were surveyed about their babies' crying patterns and their own history of migraine, and those responses were analyzed to make sure the reported crying did indeed fit the clinical definition of colic.

Mothers who suffered migraines were found to be two-and-a-half times more likely to have colicky babies. Overall, 29 percent of infants whose mothers had migraines had colic compared to 11 percent of babies whose mothers did not have migraines.

Gelfand and her colleagues believe colic may be an early manifestation of a set of conditions known as childhood periodic syndromes, believed to be precursors to migraine headaches later in life.

Babies with colic may be more sensitive to stimuli in their environment just as are migraine sufferers. They may have more difficulty coping with the onslaught of new stimuli after birth as they are thrust from the dark, warm, muffled life inside the womb into a world that is bright, cold, noisy and filled with touchy hands and bouncy knees.

The UCSF team next plans to study a group of colicky babies over the course of their childhood to see if they develop other childhood periodic syndromes, such as abdominal migraine.

The presentation "Infant Colic is Associated with Maternal Migraine" by Amy Gelfand, Katherine Thomas, and Peter Goadsby will be at 5 p.m., Wednesday, April 25 in New Orleans.

Euro Debt Crisis Could Cripple U.S. Business Travel | Augusta Blog

The economic climate abroad has potentially severe ramifications to U.S. business travel as owners lose interest in European business opportunities.

According to a new report by the Global Business Travel Association Foundation (GBTA), if the European debt crisis deteriorates any further it could have a significantly damaging impact on U.S. business travel, which in turn could greatly impede the economic recovery in the States that?s just now seeing progress.

The U.S. business travel industry has seen considerable gains over the past three years, which Michael W. McCormick, executive director and COO of the GBTA, attributes to the growth of outbound international travel. Last year alone saw business travel spending up 7.6 percent to $ 251.9 billion.

However, the current economic condition in Europe could cause business travel from the U.S. to Europe to pull back, resulting in a possible slump for top-line growth that?s been fueled by ?putting people on the road to find new business opportunities.? Not to mention the Euro slid to a one-month low earlier this week after Moody?s Investors Service put several European financial firms up for review, spelling bad news for the European banking system, as well as outbound international travel.

?There?s a strong correlation between business travel growth as a leading indicator for the overall health of the economy and for employment figures here in the U.S.,? McCormick says. ?If there?s not a speedy resolution to the European debt crisis, then what we could see is a domino effect that could reach across the waters and start to have a deep effect on the economy in the U.S.?

How deep of an effect? The GBTA?s report paints three possible scenarios:

  • Baseline/Current Scenario: The situation in Europe reaches a point of moderate stability, with continued growth in U.S. business travel reaching $ 263.5 and $ 277.3 billion in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
  • Moderate Scenario: A drawn-out crisis causes business travel to plateau and eventually decline by $ 40 billion or 7 percent between 2012 and 2013.
  • Severe Scenario: Far-reaching defaults, bank failures, and possibly a dissolved European Union would cause a sharp plummet in business travel spending by as much as $ 88 billion or 16 percent between 2012 and 2013.

With the frangible European crisis far from being resolved, McCormick fears a ?very concerning environment? is on the immediate horizon. ?Right now we?re seeing a 25 percent chance of moving to a moderate scenario and a 10 percent chance of moving to a more severe scenario?those are, unfortunately, very significant odds,? he says.

Despite the ubiquitous headlines that depict a less than favorable view of the crisis abroad, not everyone in the business travel industry is worried just yet. ?Clearly clients are concerned with what trends might exist and what might be happening with the European crisis, but we haven?t had anyone say they want to modify their travel program in any way,? says Brian Hace, vice president of client service for business travel management company Carlson Wagonlit Travel. ?There are still enough unknowns about the European crisis that there isn?t an immediate need to react.?

Should the GBTA?s predictions become a reality, Hace goes on to cite previous setbacks in the business travel industry, such as the Sept. 11 attacks and the 2010 volcanic ash eruptions in Iceland, as prime examples of how the system has been able to calibrate itself even in moments of crisis. ?I think as an industry we have an infrastructure of people and talent to address whatever the need might be on behalf our client, whether it?s an immediate security situation or a more long-term economic situation,? he says.

Although the GBTA?s findings do indeed portray quite the extreme worst-case scenario, McCormick?s urge for business owners and travel agents to err on the side of caution is justifiable given the volatile economic climate in Europe. He says, ?We certainly don?t want to be the bearer of bad news, but it?s one of the those situations now where we have to watch it very closely because it could have a very dramatic impact on business travel and business in general.?
